81. Alexander Technique
Basic intorductory information about the Technique.
http://ergonomics.org/articles/atoverview
ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE AN OVERVIEW - from Alexander Technique , an article by Joan Arnold How the Alexander Technique is taught The Alexander Technique is above all an educational method. Alexander Teachers use a combination of verbal instruction and a light, guiding, touch to convey information to their students. Alexander Technique teaching is done in private lessons and in group classes. Private lessons are usually between 1/2 and 1 hour in length. Teacher training Most certified Alexander Technique teachers have completed a three-year full time training course recognized by one of several major professional societies. Typically, the training courses have a student teacher ratio of 5:1 or less, and provide a great deal of individual attention for each trainee. A few teachers have trained more informally on an apprenticeship basis and some of them have become members of professional societies through a rigorous review process. Not all Alexander Technique teachers are certified and not all teachers eligible for certification are members of a professional society. Choosing a teacher Ask about his or her training and be prepared to take a few lessons before deciding whether to continue with a course of lessons. If you live in a community with several teachers, have a lesson or two with several before making a final decision.

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is a common condition among individuals who work in an environment that places stress on certain parts of the body. Anyone that works with computers is in a high RSI risk group, due to the demands placed on the wrist by typing. Musicians, athletes and construction workers are also prone to RSI due to the stress placed on joints and muscles. RSs should be treated as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage to the affected areas. If left untreated, this condition may prevent individuals from working or participating in sports. Most primary care physicians can treat RSI or will refer to a specialist if they are unable to treat a certain case.

Today, changes in technology, changes in the way we perform work, and where and how we work are occurring at a rapid pace. Nowhere is the change more evident than in the use of computers. This new technology has brought on new demands for information as well as new and more sophisticated computing systems. Today, almost every one of us interacts with computers on a daily basis to create new things and ideas, to produce documents, to correspond with friends and associates, and to retrieve information. Along with the expanding use of this technology have come reports about adverse health changes for computer users. Here we will examine the factors that may impact your health and performance while using a computer.

Prev Home ... Next Ergonomics is the scientific, interdisciplinary study of individuals and their physical relationship to the work environment. Just as computers have changed the way we work, it is becoming increasingly necessary for us to change the way we operate them. There are concerns over the proper and safe use of computer equipment to prevent injury. Safe computer use, including body posture, typing and mousing methods, and workstation adjustments will help prevent musculoskeletal problems. In addition to musculoskeletal problems, computer users may experience temporary symptoms such as eye strain, burning eyes, blurred vision, focusing difficulties, and headaches. (see The major causes of strain are:
    • Poor body alignment - take the time to set up your work environment to fit you. Prolonged positions - take a short break every 20 minutes or so to shift positions, walk, stretch Repetitive movements - try to vary your work, so that you use different muscles. Inadequate vision - strains posture as well as eyes - check eyes annually, you may need special glasses

    99. Injury Prevention For Industry: Ergonomics Training Programs
Provides onsite employee ergonomics training designed to prevent injuries and help reduce worker's comp costs.
    http://www.backsafe.com/
Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSI's) are costing industry $20 Billion per year
They are preventable. Future Industrial Technologies (F.I.T.) has worked with organizations such as Boeing, Chrysler, UPS, Xerox, municipalities, banks, hospitals, warehouse/trucking firms and many small businesses to substantially reduce repetitive stress injuries AND worker's compensation costs.
    What causes RSI's?
Sustained and improper posture, incorrect biomechanics and non-user friendly environments. We believe a substantial number of these injuries can be eliminated by teaching people proper biomechanics. Nowhere in our educational system are we taught how to use our bodies correctly when sitting, bending and lifting. It is little wonder there are so many injuries.
    How can F.I.T. help?
We train employees how to perform their specific job tasks in a manner that is biomechanically correct. We have over 1000 trainers throughout North America who can ensure your employees will perform their daily job tasks with proper body mechanics.
    What is the BACKSAFE Program
BACKSAFE is an injury prevention program designed to teach employees how to perform their specific jobs in a biomechanically correct manner. Combining specialized videos, stretching and job-based "Obstacle Course" workshops, BACKSAFE
