Office Ergonomics Training This site contains office ergonomics information aimed at ergonomics committee members as well as office workers in general. The information here is based on the research literature whenever possible; it may not be consistent with some of the conventional wisdom that has persisted for decades, such as "sit up straight" or "have the monitor at eye level" or "the keyboard should be at elbow height." Office ergonomics deserves to be treated separately from general (industrial) ergonomics. The principles are the same, but there are so many subtle differences and different products that it's best to specialize. This site collects and publishes some "handouts" that have been used widely in training courses for office workers and ergonomists and health care professionals who work with office workers. The handouts have received good reviews with respect to their clarity, objectivity, and scientific basis. Some have been published in slightly different form in book chapters and manuals. We are pleased to share them with you. This site was developed by Chris Grant, PhD, now retired from ergonomics. Her Michigan-based ergonomics practice, F-One Ergonomics, was limited to office-related issues. Dr. Grant and other cited authors on the site are Certified Professional Ergonomists and Certified Industrial Ergonomists who have consulted in this field for years and have been involved in the development of national and international ergonomics standards. Dr. Grant has generously transferred the site to Dennis Ankrum, who will strive to maintain the standard of excellence she has set.

OSHA has a four-pronged comprehensive approach to ergonomics designed to quickly and effectively address musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in the workplace. The four segments of OSHA's strategy for reducing injuries and illnesses from MSDs in the workplace are:
Enforcement , OSHA will conduct inspections for ergonomic hazards and issue citations under the General Duty Clause and issue ergonomic hazard alert letters where appropriate.
Outreach and Assistance , OSHA will provide assistance to businesses, particularly small businesses, and help them proactively address ergonomic issues in the workplace.
National Advisory Committee , OSHA will charter an advisory committee that will be authorized to, among other things, identify gaps in research to the application of ergonomics and ergonomic principles in the workplace.
What guidelines does OSHA provide?

    - Move With Ease
by Rajal Cohen, AmSat Certified teacher of the Alexander Technique Beyond Ergonomics As our society becomes increasingly mechanized, more and more people are suffering from repetitive strain injuries. From debilitating carpal tunnel syndrome and tendinitis, to the chronic neck pain that everyone who works at a computer takes for granted, we are all showing the effects. Why is this? On the other hand, there are a number of aids out there that really can make your life easier - if you know how to use them. Remember, they are just tools to help you change, they are not the change itself. The most ergonomic environment in the world will not make as much difference as changing the way you think. We have grown accustomed to thinking of ourselves as if our bodies were machines, and our minds completely separate. We see illustrations that show our hearts as engines, our lungs as bellows, our brains as computers, and our joints as hinges. These metaphors are fine as far as they go, but they are fundamentally misleading.

    Ergonomics: Guidelines for Nursing Homes
OSHA issued an ergonomics guideline for the nursing home industry on March 13, 2003. To develop the guidelines OSHA reviewed existing ergonomics practices and programs, State OSHA programs, as well as available scientific information. OSHA also met with stakeholders to gather information on the ergonomic problems present in the nursing home environment and the practices that have been used successfully in the industry. OSHA disseminated draft guidelines for public comment on August 30, 2002. On November 18, 2002, OSHA held a stakeholder meeting in the Washington, DC area to discuss the draft. OSHA thanks the many organizations and individuals involved for their thoughtful comments, suggestions, and assistance.

ERGONOMICS.ORG POSTURE, MOVEMENT and ERGONOMICS ERGONOMICS...
    POSTURE...
In recent years, ergonomists have attempted to define postures which minimize unnecessary static work and reduce the forces acting on the body. All of us could significantly reduce our risk of injury if we could adhere to the following ergonomic principles: 1. All work activities should permit the worker to adopt several different, but equally healthy and safe postures 2. Where muscular force has to be exerted it should be done by the largest appropriate muscle groups available. 3. Work activities should be performed with the joints at about mid-point of their range of movement. This applies particularly to the head, trunk, and upper limbs. (Cortlett, 1983) THE PROBLEM...
Here, however, we arrive at a problem: In order to put these recommendations into practice, a person would have to be a skilled observer of his or her own joint and muscle functioning and would have to be able to change his or her posture to a healthier one at will. No one develops this sort of highly refined sensory awareness without special training. Therefore, in order to derive the benefits of ergonomic research, we must learn how to observe our bodies in a new way.* A SOLUTION...
