    34: Ordinary differential equations
    Introduction
Ordinary differential equations are equations to be solved in which the unknown element is a function, rather than a number, and in which the known information relates that function to its derivatives. Few such equations admit an explicit answer, but there is a wealth of qualitative information describing the solutions and their dependence on the defining equation. There are many important classes of differential equations for which detailed information is available. Applications to engineering and the sciences abound. Numerical solutions are actively studied.

    Applications and related fields
Note that every indefinite integration problem is really an example of a differential equation, so the entirety of section 28: Integration and Measure is subsumed in this section in principle. The solutions to many classic differential equations, particularly linear second-order differential equations, cannot be expressed in terms of the elementary functions but are themselves studied in 33: Special Functions . This includes Bessel functions, Whittaker functions, Airy functions, and so on.

    http://math.nist.gov/~WMitchell/mgghat/mgghat.html
    MGGHAT Version 1.1
MGGHAT (MultiGrid Galerkin Hierarchical Adaptive Triangles) is a FORTRAN program for the solution of general second order linear self-adjoint elliptic partial differential equations with Dirichlet, natural or mixed boundary conditions on 2D polygonal domains (possibly with holes). MGGHAT uses a finite element method with linear, quadratic or cubic elements (user selectable) over triangles. The adaptive refinement via newest vertex bisection and the multigrid iteration are both based on a hierarchical basis formulation. Run time and a posteriori graphical displays are made with gnuplot. Several changes have been made since version 1.0. It now has the capability to save the program state and evaluate the solution from the saved state. This is useful for systems of equations, time dependent problems, nonlinear equations, etc. Examples for a system of equation and a time dependent problem are included. All graphics are now done with gnuplot. A Tcl/Tk based menu has been added for manipulation of the graphics. An example driver program for solving Poisson's equation with mixed boundary conditions is available. You can also view the

    35: Partial differential equations
    Introduction
Like ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations are equations to be solved in which the unknown element is a function, but in PDEs the function is one of several variables, and so of course the known information relates the function and its partial derivatives with respect to the several variables. Again, one generally looks for qualitative statements about the solution. For example, in many cases, solutions exist only if some of the parameters lie in a specific set (say, the set of integers). Various broad families of PDE's admit general statements about the behaviour of their solutions. This area has a long-standing close relationship with the physical sciences, especially physics, thermodynamics, and quantum mechanics: for many of the topics in the field, the origins of the problem and the qualitative nature of the solutions are best understood by describing the corresponding result in physics, as we shall do below. Roughly corresponding to the initial values in an ODE problem, PDEs are usually solved in the presence of

Its goal is to develop a resaerch which links theoretical and numerical approaches to differential equations, especially in the area of variational methods. This research is conducted in collaboration with the Mathematical Analysis Team and the Mathematical Logic Team We will be very happy to hear from you either by email fax or snail mail Teachings given by the members of the Numerical Analysis Team include the first year course on Mathematical Analysis and some numerically oriented courses . In the frame of the DEA , a course on non-compact variational problems will be given in 2001. Email address : J.R.Norris@statslab.cam.ac.uk Research interests : Topics in probability and analysis, including stochastic differential equations, Malliavin calculus, analysis of heat kernels, homogenization, Brownian motion and Brownian sheet, stochastic differential geometry, models of coagulation and coalescence. Let me describe in a little more detail my interest in coagulation. In diverse contexts one is led to consider a large system of particles (bubbles, droplets, stars, molecules...) which, over time, stick together to form larger particles. This can be modelled as a Markov random process. The challenge is to discover the possible sorts of behaviour of these systems: is there a non-random approximation giving the evolving concentrations of particles of various masses, do most of the particles eventually (or instantaneously) stick together, do spatial fluctuations matter, does the mass distribution, suitably renormalised, converge in long time? These are questions of interest to scientists in many fields but a rigorous mathematical theory has only partly emerged. Techniques relevant to the analysis of these processes are martingales, weak convergence, coupling of processes and plenty of careful estimates. Further details can be found on my Personal Home Page
