Insect Drawings Gallery
Below are a series of original drawings used some 50 to 60 years ago as teaching aids for entomology at the University of Illinois. They were rescued from Harker Hall, the old Law, then Chemistry, and later Entomology building, during its recent renovation. The original drawings are on canvas, approximately 1.0 by 1.5 meters and were drawn as a WPA project during the Depression. Many of them seem to be based (sometimes closely) on drawings found in "Destructive and Useful Insects" by C.L. Metcalf and W.P. Flint. The images below are mainly overviews of several of the more common insect orders (The taxonomic purist will note that some of the panels contain more than one order as we recognize them today. Errata are listed here ). The images you see have been electronically "cleaned". Click on the opened icon (or the order name) to see the full image (or another page of choices). Also included are links to the Tree of Life at the University of Arizona by David and Wayne Maddison for those who want taxonomic information on each of the orders. Entomology The science of entomology is the study of insects, a group of animals which are invertebrates. Invertebrates have no backbone. However, insects can be distinguished from other invertebrates by their having three body parts (head, thorax and abdomen), six-legs, antennae, compound eyes and a hard outer casing made of chitin. Most insects have wings in some form, occasionally vestigial in nature, but some of the more advanced insects, which have evolved social living, have casts which have no wings at all (i.e. workers).

The Essig Museum of Entomology was originally founded as the collection component of the California Insect Survey (CIS) at the University of California, Berkeley. Most of the collection dates to the inception of the CIS in 1940. The museum houses one of the largest and most active research collections of arthropods in the United States, with more than 5 million specimens, primarily from western North America and the northern neotropics. The Essig Museum has always maintained a strong commitment to education and extension. Through this website we hope to facilitate access to information on the vast arthropod biodiversity of California and other regions within the scope of our holdings

Home Distance Masters Degree in Entomology Introduction and Background on the Degree Program The Department of Entomology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) offers a full curriculum distance M.S. degree in Entomology. The distance option emphasizes course work in entomology and flexibility in non-entomological training specific to individual student needs and interests. The distance M.S. option was developed for students who cannot participate in an on-campus degree program. Intended audiences for this degree are individuals actively involved in entomologically related professions where advanced training in entomology is desirable, as well as those seeking such positions. Examples include agricultural professionals, crop consultants, pest control operators, and high school science and biology teachers. Students enrolled in the distance program will have the opportunity to apply the training they receive in this program to their individual professions. In the Department of Entomology, we strive to build programs designed to meet the needs of our students! Here are a few highlights:
  • The Distance M.S. in Entomology degree program follows the requirements for an Option III masters degree. These requirements are determined by the UNL’s Graduate College.

University of Missouri-Columbia Forensic Entomology, or Medicocriminal Entomology, is the science of using insect evidence to uncover circumstances of interest to the law, often related to a crime. The time of death, for example, can usually be determined using insect evidence gathered from and around a corpse, provided the evidence is properly collected, preserved and analyzed by an appropriately educated forensic entomologist. Insect scientists, or entomologists, are being called upon with increasing frequency to apply their knowledge and expertise to criminal and civil proceedings. They are also recognized members of forensic laboratories and medical/legal investigation teams.

Get This Bug Off of Me!

It's a natural reaction to be frightened of some insects. Many insects have the ability to harm people, and many insects look very menacing. However, many large insects are not harmful at all. Because it would take several volumes to describe every insect, this publication is intended to distinguish several common insects and insect relatives in Kentucky that are or are not harmful.
Insects and relatives which are NOT harmful:
UK Dept. of Entomology Daddy-long-legs look like long-legged spiders but are actually relatives of spiders. They only have one body section (spiders have two body sections). They do not sting or have venom. Daddy-long-legs feed on plants and sometimes decaying materials in forests. Millipedes cannot hurt people. They do look similar to centipedes (their sometimes dangerous relatives), but with two big differences:
  • millipedes have chewing mouthparts
  • millipedes have two pairs of legs for each body segment (centipedes have only one pair of legs per segment).

Clemson Entomology students bring home awards
Linnaean Games Competition Team: James Korecki, Amy Kilpatrick, C.J. Geraci, Will Reeves FIRST PLACE LINNAEAN COMPETITION TEAM Clemson Entomology graduate students took first place in the Linnaean Games quiz bowl competition at the annual meeting of the Southeastern Branch of the Entomological Society of America held February 15-18 in Charleston, South Carolina. The team of James Korecki Amy Kilpatrick C.J. Geraci , and Will Reeves , coached by Dr. Gerald Carner and Dr. Patricia Zungoli, Entomology Club advisors, competed against teams from Auburn University, University of Florida, University of Georgia, North Carolina State University, and University of Tennessee. The last time a Clemson team brought home this award was in 1983. The team will receive a $600 cash award to be used toward travel to the national competition scheduled for November in Salt Lake City. The Linnaean Games are named after biologist Carolus Linnaeaus. Teams are tested on scientific knowledge, current events and trivia associated with insects and related organisms.

Welcome to the Michigan State University Department of Entomology Our department has a long history of excellence in research, extension, and graduate education and we continue to focus on these areas for the issues that confront us today and for the future. The Department of Entomology works through two colleges- the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the College of Natural Science . This two-college arrangement enables students to integrate the agriculture/natural resources and biological/physical sciences in an optimally beneficial way. We offer B.S. M.S. , and Ph.D. degrees and consider graduate student education and postdoctoral experience to be one of our highest priorities. Congratulations to two of our faculty members for receiving honors - we're very proud of them: Dr. Rich Merritt received the 2004 MSU Distinguished Faculty Award; and Dr. Jim Miller
