Voltaic cells are those in which spontaneous chemical reactions produce electricity and supply it to an external circuit. Electrodes The cathode is the electrode at which reduction occurs. The anode is the electrode at which oxidation occurs. Electrolysis Electrolytic cells are those in which electrical energy from an external source causes nonspontaneous chemical reactions to occur. An electrochemical reaction that is nonspontaneous can be driven to proceed by applying an external electrical supply. Electrolysis can be performed in aqueous solutions or in systems called melts in which the solid electrolyte reactants are molten. Electrolysis of molten salts is a straightforward process, although it generally requires high temperatures to melt the salts. Overview of current research.
The principal objective of research in this group is the elucidation of the mechanisms of complex, multi-step electrode reactions of organic and organometallic compounds. The results of this research are relevant not only in the areas of organic and inorganic chemistry, but also find applications in chemical analysis, electroorganic synthesis, pollution control, electrocatalysis, batteries and fuels cells. A full understanding of an electrode reactions must include a complete description of its component steps. Thus, our work includes studies of the factors controlling the rates of simple electron-transfer reactions occurring at electrode surfaces as well as the electron-transfer reactions in solution near the electrode that involve the various species in the overall mechanism (reactants, intermediates, products). Other component reactions are of a more chemical nature. They may be as simple as an isomerization or conformational change of the reactant or an intermediate. However, bonds may also be formed (dimerization, protonation) or broken (loss of an atom or functional group) and these steps combine with the electron-transfer reactions to make up the overall process. An important type of reaction is bond cleavage associated with electron transfer to or from the reactant. Most such reactions are two-step processes in which an intermediate radical anion is formed followed by expulsion of a leaving group. However, others appear to be concerted processes (dissociative electron-transfer reactions) in which both steps occur together and no intermediate radical ion exists. Part of our research is directed toward discovering new examples of the rarer type, dissociative electron transfers.

    Introduction to Electrochemistry
    Electrochemistry is the study of interchange of chemical and electrical energy. Reduction/Oxidation ( redox ) involves the exchange of electrons from one chemical species to another. Normally, this is done when the two chemicals contact each other (bump into each other). Separating the chemical species such that the electrons transfer via an external circuit, we can measure the electrochemical effects.
    Redox
    Redox , reduction-oxidation reactions are reactions that involves transfer of electrons. In the following example we will see that redox reactions involves both reduction and oxidation:
    Example:
    > Br : Oxidation
    Cl : Reduction
    + Cl = Br Redox reaction
    Reduction : the donation of electrons to a species.
    Oxidation : the removal of electrons from a species.
    A substance which causes another to get oxidized is called an oxidizing agent (or oxidant) and will itself get reduced.
    A substance which causes another to get reduced is called a reducing agent (or reductant) and will itself get oxidized.
