EVs on the Web
Lead Acid Batteries The Electric Vehicle Project is one of many projects of Acterra (formerly known as Bay Area Action), an environmental group based in Palo Alto, California. The Electric Vehicle Project was started with the donation of an MG Midget from Will Doolittle with the stipulation that the MG be converted to run on electric power. An outline of the project was written up and interested members of BAA met to work on turning a noisy, smelly gas-burning car into a quiet, clean, smooth-riding electric car. Why go Electric? Top About Acterra's EV Project The original goal of the Electric Vehicle Project was to convert a car to electric and show the viability of electric vehicles (EVs) as a clean, quite commute alternative. After the successful conversion of our first car, an important new goal came to the forefront: to make available the information we learned about converting a car to electric and to be a resource for other interested parties wishing to convert a car. The donation of the a MG Midget by Will Doolittle, with the stipulation that the MG be converted to run on Electric power, got the project rolling in 1992.

What is it? Electric vehicles run on ELECTRICITY (see " Electricity " fact sheet). Electric vehicles can be one of the least environmentally damaging means of motorized transportation that we can choose from. Why Electric?
  • Electricity is our most familiar source of energy. It can be made from clean, renewable energy sources such as wind, water, or solar power (see "Electricity," next page).
  • "Refueling" (recharging) at home is more convenient for people on the go. Nearly every home and business has an electrical service that can support electric vehicle recharging.
  • The annual cost of electricity for recharging is about 1/3 less than the annual cost of gasoline.
  • With special quick chargers, it only takes 15 minutes to recharge electric cars.
  • Electric vehicles are "Zero Emission Vehicles." They have absolutely zero tailpipe emissions. (In fact, they don’t even have tailpipes!)

Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs)
CalStart Hybrid Bus
Feb. 12, 1998 : CalStart and California's Alameda / Contra Costa Transit have rolled out a Hybrid Electric Vehicle bus project for a six month test. It uses a two rotor propane fueled rotary engine developed by Alturdyne and APS as a 40 KW Auxiliary Power Unit ( APU ) to power a generator. It has a range of 230 miles.
Moller International CalStart Contract
A Moller Rotapower engine will be installed in a serial HEV with impressive performance and they have a contract with CALSTART. By running their single rotor engine at reduced horsepower (15 to 30 instead of 80) they achieve minimal emissions , and drive an electric generator for the electric motor(s), all the while attaining 70 miles per gallon. Emissions are expected to meet California's Equivalent Zero Emission Vehicle standards (EZEV). The target vehicle is an electric Geo Metro (Solectra Force) . The battery pack will be reduced in weight by 500 lbs and with the added engine weight the car will weigh 1900 lbs, similar to a conventional Geo Metro. to 60 mph will be in 12 seconds and range will be over 250 miles.
Electric Auto Corporation
The Silver Volt II of 1998 was available in one version as a hybrid with a small rotary engine from Electric Auto Corporation. It had a range of 350 to 400 miles. Price was $35,000. They were located at 4747 N Ocean Dr., Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33308, USA, tel. (888) 783-7050, fax (954) 785-0656

-or-
"Why can't you drive a normal car?"
I suppose I did for many years, that is if a 1960 Rambler station wagon counts as "normal". Up until recently, I have been motoring in an '87 Ranger 4x4, which with 130,000 miles on all-original drive train components, is getting a little ragged.
N ovember of 1998, a friend mentioned that he had sold the electric VW Rabbit that I had posted on the 'Stuff for Sale" page for the amazingly low price of $1,500. I replied that I would have bought it for that price and promptly forgot about the subject. Two weeks later, he called to say that the sale had fallen through and that the car was now available again. We agreed that I should try driving it sometime, and again I didn't think of it much.
T he next day, I went to the Oregon Coast for a day of recreation, and upon returning home, found the car sitting in the driveway, keys and all, with a note saying "try it out"
S o, try it out I did. The car had a few small things that needed fixing, like a non-functional tail light and horn, and the odometer was broken, but it seemed to drive alright, so I just drove it wherever I needed to go. The realization that I hadn't driven a gas powered car in three weeks finally did hit me. This car works! It takes me where I want to go around town, so I bought it.
N ow, the 4x4 pickup is retired to backup service. I still have a gas-powered vehicle to pull the utility trailer, mush through snow, or take on a long trip, but I am no longer wearing it out on short trips around town. The pickup is still a perfectly serviceable vehicle and it will last a lot longer in it's new 'standby' role.

Watch a 5-minute video about the Challenge (RealVideo) About EV Challenge... The development of the EV Challenge program began in 1993 with three high schools participating in the construction of electric vehicles. Since then, the yearlong, hands-on program has increased its educational services and grown to include 30 high schools from seven states. A middle school program using the principles of the Junior Solar Sprint was added to the EV Challenge in 2000, and has grown to include 14 middle schools throughout the state of North Carolina. The Junior Solar Sprint provides the middle school students with a solid foundation in sustainability energy content that they will need to progress to the advanced EV Challenge program at the high school level. During the 2002-2003 school year an estimated 4500 students from various backgrounds actively participated in the design and construction of solar and electric vehicles. Students also have access to the EV Challenge Mobile Classroom, a twenty-five foot enclosed trailer that features educational displays, a student built electric Triumph Spitfire, a middle school solar car, and a bi-fuel natural gas tow vehicle. The Mobile Classroom will be viewed at various schools, the North Carolina State Fair and several alternative fuel conferences throughout the region.
