Narmer KINGDOMS AND CALENDAR For Details of Calendric Calculation: See Narmer and Khasekhemwy The Name Cheops or modern Khufu is Qevi'a in Hebrew meaning new calendric fixing or keep. It is also found in Mesoamerican Quechua (Maya, Aztec) language as quippu or kipu for the meaning of record-keeping Astronomical calendration was the reason for the building of the Great Pyramid. At this time the term Khepri (Kaaper) came into use, allegedly meaning "he who is coming into being" which thus described a calendric reform based on precession. Since, Pharaonic Language is related to Indo-European, we retain similar terms in English as keep, keeper and cipher (mark, record). Pharaonic Kingdoms began in 3117 BC and had 684-year intervals since 684 is a multiple of the 18-year period of the Saros Cycle of Eclipses multiplied by the 19-year Metonic Cycle multiplied by 2. Also used was the period of one-tenth of the precessional round of 25920 years, i.e. 2592 years, which was 525 years after 3117 BC and which Exiguus incorrectly ADDED rather than subtracted in reforming the calender in 525 AD. The year 2592 BC marked the end of the reign of the calendric king, Khasekhemy, who was the first to reform the calendar for the tropical year in 2638 BC, 45 viz. 46 years previous. This is why Sosigenes advised Julius Caesar on Calendar Reform in 46 BC, conforming the calendric cycles.

    INTRODUCTION
    EXHIBITION OVERVIEW
    The exhibition is a brief introduction to the important discoveries by a few leading Egyptologists, and the memorable views of the Nile River Valley produced by gifted and industrious photographers. Each documented Egypt in ways of enduring value. They witnessed and recorded the 19th century state of the monuments and, through their work, awakened in people a curiosity to learn more.
    EXCAVATION OF A MASTABA TOMB.
    This 19th century photograph shows the famous Egyptologist Auguste Mariette as he supervises the removal of objects from an Old Kingdom mastaba tomb at Saqqara. During the period covered by the exhibition, the discipline of Egyptology moved forward with great strides, and improved archaeological methods were established. At the same time, new technological developments in photography were introduced, and photographic records became more useful to research. The juxtaposition of photographs and ancient objects in the exhibition makes clear why people came to Egypt and what seized their imagination. SCHOLARS, SCOUNDRELS, AND THE SPHINX also suggests the condition of ancient tombs and monuments, mosques, and museums, providing views of how they once looked and indicating a few of the monuments subsequently moved to other locations due to rising waters of the Nile River resulting from construction of the dam at Aswan.

Amenophis IV/Akhenaten, the father-in-law of Tutankhamun, was king of Egypt and her empire for only seventeen years. His worship of the god Aten to the exclusion of other deities, his founding of a new capital city and the distinctive style of the art of his reign have made him a fascinating figure and one of the best known of Egyptian pharaohs. This book surveys Akhenaten's life and times and discusses the reign of his father in which he grew up, his early years as king at Thebes and his later years at Amarna, his new city. There is a section on the royal family and its relationships, including Akhenaten's beautiful queen Nefertiti, their six daughters and other members of the royal household. The religious and artistic aspects of the reign are summarised and Akhenaten's major achievement, the city of Akhetaten, is described. Angela Thomas studied Egyptology at Liverpool University and University College London and holds degrees from both universities. She is now Senior Keeper of Human History at Bolton Museum and Art Gallery. Other titles for Shire by this author are:

The History of Egyptology Napoleon I and Vivant Denon paved the way in the discovery of Egypt in archeology. On July 2, 1798 Napoleon stepped onto Egyptian soil after leaving France. He was on his way to seize British lands in India but came upon resistence from British Naval forces. After spending nineteen days in the desert of Egypt, Napoleon and his men, came across the Nile and the city of Cairo. On the horizon in silhouettes were shadowy figures that were later to be known as the Pyramids of Giza. These symbols were of a lost society, formed and prospering before the birth of Islam. Napoleon's response was of ecstatic proportions, "Soldiers, forty centuries are looking down upon you!" The discovery of Egypt awoke a political and scientific interest. While Napoleon was busy running Egypt, Denon, an artist, was busy and enthralled with capturing the essence and archeological importance of Egypt through the use of his paper and crayons. He was giving the world a visual record of Egypt while scholars and scientists were examining and cataloging all that they could find. During his findings a key to the Egyptian myteries was discovered. This piece was a black basalt stele known as the Rosetta Stoneconsisting of three bands of writing. In September of 1801 the French were forced to turn o ver the collection of Pharaonic antiquities to England aftrer they captured Alexandria. The pieces were then transported and housed in the British Museum by order of George III. Despite loses of the original findings; France had its resources. As pieces were unveiled a copy was produced thus allowing French scholars to continue their studies. The first to make use of these findings was Denon who published, "Voyage dans la Haute et la Basse Egypte". Between the years of 1809 and 1813 the works of Jomard were published. These works, "Description de l'Egypte," were a unique step in archaeological history.

A Concise History of Polish Egyptology
Proven interest of Polish people in Egypt and its ancient past reach back as far as to the 16th century. In 1583 magnate Mikolaj Krzysztof Radziwill (Radvila) nicknamed as "Orphan" made a journey to Egypt, using the opportunity of a pilgrimage to Holy Land; he visited the Delta, reaching the Pyramids in Gizeh and the necropolis of Memphis. He bought there two mummies and a chest with some ancient objects; however, he did not manage to bring them to Poland, because he threw them away when coming back, during a storm on the sea, following a priest's advice. He described his journey in a journal Hierosolymitana Pegrinatio (Latin edition and translations) that used to be popular in Europe and many times reprinted. Many his notes within the context of that period's knowledge on ancient Egypt are astonishing because of observing precision, and colourful descriptions allow for faultless recognition of not only particular monuments, but also types of minor relics, such as shabti figurines or canopic jars. (See: Thomas Schneider, Der Ägyptenbesuch des Mikolaj Krzysztof Radziwill Sierotka von 1583 , "Zeitschrift für Ägyptische Sprache und Altertumskunde", t.117/1990);

The Nile valley forms a natural geographic and economic unit, being bounded to the east and west by deserts, to the north by the sea and to the south by the Cataracts of the Nile. The need to have a single authority to manage the waters of the Nile led to the creation of the world's first state in Egypt in about 3000 BC. Egypt's peculiar geography made it a difficult country to attack, which is why Pharaonic Egypt was for so long an independent and self-contained state.
