    http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hall/1585/
EGYPTOLOGY IN URUGUAY HELLO! Let me introduce myself so that I can talk to you about a group of people in a small country who had a dream... and are trying to make it happen ! Prof. Juan José Castillos Director of the Uruguayan Institute of Egyptology The Uruguayan Society and Institute of Egyptology In 1980 a group of Uruguayans founded the Uruguayan Society of Egyptology with the purpose of the accurate popularization of the facts concerning one of the most wonderful civilizations in the history of mankind. Before 1980 all that the public knew about the subject was what was found in books from different sources (some reliable and others not so much) and the little that was taught in local institutions. It is easy to understand that all sorts of strange theories and interpretations flourished unchecked bringing confusion to the unsuspecting readers who did not have at the time where to turn for the actual facts, as brought forward by reliable scholars. Given the distinguished cultural tradition of the country, some Uruguayans felt it was time to do something about this sad situation. The courses range from Archaeology, History of the Ancient Near East, Ancient Egyptian History, Art, Religion, Literature and Science and Technology, Egyptian Language, etc. to mandatory courses on modern languages such as English, French and German. We are a non-profit institution that does not receive any grants or financial help from any official or private source, except for the very small fees paid by the Members of about U$S 100 per year, which go for the operational expenses of the institution. Our teaching staff work on an honorary basis as a generous contribution to Uruguayan culture. We have been publishing a learned Journal, the

OTHER EGYPTIAN COLLECTIONS IN URUGUAY Besides the Egyptian Museum of the Uruguayan Society of Egyptology, there are other museums in Montevideo that have objects belonging to such an ancient civilization, many of them of great beauty or value as archaeological artifacts, although unfortunately none of them comes from scientific excavations. They are all donations from individuals who bought them in Egypt a long time ago or from exchanges between institutions. We thought it would be useful for people to know more beyond our regional boundaries about the existence of these museums and what they have in storage and on permanent exhibition. MUSEO DE HISTORIA DEL ARTE DE LA INTENDENCIA MUNICIPAL DE MONTEVIDEO This museum has recently been refurbished and offers the public an excellent collection of ancient Near Eastern and Classical art, most of them very good reproductions and many authentic objects. Under the able direction of its Coordinator, Gustavo Ferrari, and with the work of a team of skilled administrators and experts in conservation, it is currently carrying out an expansion into other neighbouring premises, where a museum of Precolumbian and Colonial Latin American art is also located. With its ample floor area, it allows visitors the comfortable enjoyment and an adequate exhibition of its rich collections. The Egyptian Room contains objects belonging to most periods of ancient Egyptian history, from the Predynastic to Graeco-Roman times.

THE DIRECTORY OF NORTH AMERICAN EGYPTOLOGISTS
Edited by Richard H. Wilkinson and Charles E. Jones
To submit new or corrected addresses for inclusion in the Directory use one of the following forms: If you do not have a forms capable browser, send your additions and corrections to one of the addresses at the bottom of this page. The Directory of North American Egyptologists is an on-line publication of the Research Archives of the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago and a joint project of The University of Arizona Egyptian Expedition and the Oriental Institute. The directory primarily lists trained individuals (including current doctoral students who have obtained candidacy for the Ph.D. degree in Egyptology) whose regular work involves the history, archaeology, language or culture of ancient (pre-Islamic) Egypt. The directory also lists a number of other scholars who, while not primarily trained in Egyptology, are engaged in research, administration, preservation, or other related work in this field. An appendix compiled by Charles E. Jones lists Egyptological dissertations currently in progress and those completed or made available in the past year. The directory is produced and maintained to facilitate communication between individuals working in the field of Egyptology. Hypertext links to the electronic addresses which are listed are included, so that an E-mail message can be sent by simply clicking on an address when viewing the list with a standard web-browsing program. The list is not intended to be used for commercial purposes, and telephone and E-mail listings should not be used for unsolicited marketing.

    Egyptology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Egyptology , a sub-field of archaeology , is the science or study of Egyptian antiquities, esp. Egyptian hieroglyphics . A practicioner of the discipline is known as an "Egyptologist". Egyptology investigates the range of Ancient Egyptian advanced culture ( language literature history religion , art, economics , and ethics) of the Egyptian history from the 5th millennium BC up to the end of Roman rule in the 4th century AD. Modern Egyptology begins in the year , when Jean-François Champollion deciphered the Egyptian hieroglyphics from the Rosetta Stone . Only with knowledge of Egyptian writing and language was it possible to study Ancient Egyptian culture.

The collection includes objects from prehistoric Egypt (c. 10,000 BC) to the Byzantine era, up to around AD 600. There are about 20,000 objects in the Egyptology collection. In addition to the exhibitions in the Daily Life Gallery and the Funerary Gallery, the entrance hall of the Museum displays monumental stone sculpture from the temples of ancient Bubastis (modern Tell Basta) in the Nile Delta. Objects that are not on display are kept in storage, where they are accessible to researchers from around the world.
    History of the Collection
Like many British museums, The Manchester Museum gave financial support to British archaeologists working in Egypt in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In return, the Museum received a share of the artefacts that were found (although this practice was gradually stopped once Egypt became an independent republic in 1952). Because the artefacts were discovered in controlled excavations, where archaeologists record and keep everything they find, the Egyptology collection contains a wide variety of objects which were unearthed exactly where they had been left by the ancient Egyptians.
