Edentata (Xenarthra) Edentata (also known as Xenarthra) is an order of placental mammals that includes anteaters, armadillos, and sloths . These New World animals (from the Americas) all lack front teeth; some have enamel-less cheek teeth. These animals have two or three very long fingers on each hand. Edentata means "toothless." Xenarthra means "strange joint." This order is divided into three suborders (and four families):
  • Suborder Pilosa (5 species of sloths)
    • Family Megalonychidae (two-toed sloths)
    • Family Bradypodidae (three toed sloths)
  • Suborder Vermilingua (3 species of anteaters)
    • Family Myrmecophagidae
  • Suborder Cingulata (20 species of armadillos)
    • Family Dasypodidae

editLink('skunkworks/.accounts/200310302402') 2004/05/18 13:30:16.802 GMT-4 By Phil Myers Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Subphylum: Vertebrata Class: Mammalia Order: Xenarthra Members of this Order Xenarthrans radiated in South America during the Tertiary, when that continent was isolated by sea from other continents. The group currently includes armadillos 2-toed sloths 3-toed sloths , and anteaters , placed in four families containing 29 species. These animals are mostly insectivores and herbivores of small to medium body size (up to around 60 kg). In the past, however, xenarthrans were much more diverse and numerous. They radiated into around a dozen families, including not only the groups known today, but also such animals as giant ground sloths, some of which were larger than elephants; glyptodonts, reaching 3 m in length and the most heavily armored vertebrates that ever existed; and a large number of smaller grazing and browsing forms. Several groups of xenarthrans successfully crossed the Central American land bridge to North America when it formed in the Pliocene; these included a number of kinds of ground sloths and armadillos. Only one species, however, an armadillo ( Dasypus novemcinctus ), is still alive today.

EDENTATA , the name assigned by Cuvier to an order of placental mammals apparently typified by the South American anteater, but likewise including the sloths and armadillos of the same country, and the Old World aard-varks and pangolins. Only the anteaters and pangolins are absolutely without teeth (Lat. e, out, dens, tooth), and the name is strictly applicable only to those two groups; but in all the existing representatives of the order teeth are absent from the front of the jaws, while; the cheek-teeth are devoid of roots ai~d of enamel, and only very exceptionally have deciduous predecessors. Practically this is all the definition that can be given to the assemblage, which is possibly an artificial one. It may be mentioned, however, that there is not unfrequently a separate coracoid bone. Xenart/zra.The typical American edentates, or Xenarthra, are characterized by the circumstance that the last dorsal and all the~ lumbar vertebrae carry additional articular facets, or abnormal articnlations (xenarthral). Teeth may be absent or present, and when developed either all similar (homaeodont) or to some extent differentiated. The bodily covering may take the form either of coarse hairs, or of bony plates, with a larger or smaller intermixture of hairs. Of the three existing families of this group, the first is that of the Brady pdidae, or sloths, characterized by the presence of five pairs of upper and four of lower teeth, the normally-formed tongue and the rudimentary tail. The species are arboreal and feed on leaves; all being confined to the forests of tropical America. Externally sloths are clothed with long coarse, crisp ha.ir; the head is short and rounded, and the external cars inconspicuous. The teeth are subcylindrical, of persistent Fl G. i.Skull of ljnau or Two-toed Sloth (Choloepus didactylus).

It provides basic information on anatomy and population numbers for each of the three species, and then studies the capture and anaesthesia procedure for each, and looks at the anaesthetics which can be used. The document is taken from "Zoological restraint and anesthesia" edited by D Heard. Chapters of this book are published by the International Veterinary Information Service (IVIS), a non-profit organisation which provides full-text access to a wide range of veterinary information. Edentates (Xenarthrans)
Please choose an animal from the list below:
Order Xenarthra (a.k.a Edentata) Xenarthrans, also known as edentates, comprise a small group of some of the more unusual mammals. They are, for the most part, insectivores and herbivores, and are either terrestrial or arboreal in nature. They are found in the warmer climates of South America and North America, being found in Mexico and southern US in North America. Edentates usually lack incisors or canines, and of those that have them their molars lack enamel. Their teeth are held in by a single root each. Edentates have small brains. Anatomically, they have between 5-9 cervical vertebrae, whereas most other mammals have 7. Today, there are 29 species in 4 families; according to the fossil record there were at one time 12 families comprised of animals such as glyptodonts and giant ground sloths. The present-day families are: Dasypodidae (armadillos) 20 spp
Myrmecophagidae (anteaters) 4 spp
Bradypodidae (3-toed sloths) 3 spp
Megalonychidae (2-toed sloths) 2 spp Back Home
