Environmental Analysis Ecotoxicology Our ecotoxicology capability enables WRc-NSF to address for it's clients issues of fate and behaviour in both aquatic and terrestrial systems. With an outstanding portfolio of project experience in regulatory research and method development, routine effluent toxicity testing and bioaccumulation studies, the company generates data for use in chemical risk assessments in anticipation of national and EU environmental protection initiatives. We operate at the heart of terrestrial ecotoxicology research and are involved at the forefront in the application of procedures to investigate and assess damage to terrestrial ecosystems and human health arising from land contamination.

Québec region Issue and challenge
The contamination of the environment by toxic substances is linked both to industrialization and to agriculture. Toxic substances find their way into ecosystems from discharges and leaks of industrial products, consumer wastes and urban sewage, from farming and forestry runoff, and from accidental spills. Contaminants may be dispersed over great distances by winds and water currents. Some of these compounds (organochlorines and heavy metals) accumulate in animal tissues, particularly in predators that are at the top of the food chain. Organochlorines pose a serious threat, because it can take decades for them to decompose naturally. See also the publication

Aim of the programme
This programme explores and applies various techniques for the monitoring of contaminants in the aquatic environment, ultimately enabling ecological hazard and risk assessment.
Duration
1 year full time
General programme structure
Water covers approximately two-thirds of the Earth's surface and a rich diversity of animals and plants inhabit the aquatic environment. These organisms and habitats play a vital role in both human and ecosystem health and damage to our aquatic environment has severe implications.
Aquatic ecotoxicology is the study of the potential effects of contaminants upon aquatic ecosystems and the importance of this expanding area is being duly recognised by industries, regulators and environmental organisations. It is an interdisciplinary subject, bringing together chemistry, biochemistry, toxicology, physiology, ecology and genetics. Issues relating to mechanisms of uptake, bioaccumulation, detoxification and excretion in aquatic organisms are assessed to provide you with an understanding of the potential adverse effects of contaminants at different levels of biological organisation.
At Plymouth, excellent facilities are available to support teaching and research in aquatic ecotoxicology. We have an extensive experimental aquarium and purpose-built ecotoxicology and molecular biology laboratories. Our partner institutions, including the Marine Biological Association, the Plymouth Marine Laboratory and the National Marine Aquarium, also have well-equipped laboratories for undertaking experimental work.

Reproductive and Endocrine Ecotoxicology Theme Team Executive Summary
Executive Summary In fiscal year 1999/2000, over 80 researchers participated in 12 research projects supported through the Endocrine and Reproductive Ecotoxicology program of the Canadian Network of Toxicology Centres. These studies addressed the strategic directions established at a CNTC sponsored priority setting workshop and include:
(A) Field assessment of reproductive, endocrine and immune modulation in wildlife.
(B) Development and validation of screening tools for endocrine modulating substances.
(C) Identifying mechanisms of modulation of reproductive function. (A) Field Assessment:
Research this fiscal year included: 1. An evaluation of whether fish in areas of the St. Lawrence River receiving municipal effluents from the city of Montreal are exposed to xenoestrogens and how this relates to endocrine disruption, immune capacity and resistance to parasitic infection (D. Cyr and M. Fournier, Institute Armand-Frappier).

OUTPUT 4: ECOTOXICOLOGY Rationale: Evidence of an acceptably low level of environmental impact 4A: Environmental risk assessment 4.A.1: Review of current studies An ecotoxicology profile of Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum IMI 330189 has been prepared for submission as part of registration dossiers. 4.A.2: Host range determination A full ecotox profile including current data on host range is provided in the report 'Green Muscle Ecotoxicological Profile.' 4.A.3: Environmental monitoring during field trials A full analysis of trials conducted in 1996 is now available for publication (Peveling et al., 1999). Medium-scale experimental field applications of two grasshopper and locust control agents, the mycoinsecticide Metarhizium anisopliae (flavoviride) var. acridum (Deuteromycotina: Hyphomycetes) and the organophosphate fenitrothion, were carried out in August 1996 in Maïne Soroa, Niger. The objective was to evaluate effects and side-effects on target grasshoppers and epigeal non-target arthropods, using simple binary (presence/absence) sampling techniques. Plots ( 50 ha, 3 replicates) were treated at standard recommended dose rates of 5 x 10
