162. Center For Streamside Studies
Offers information on education programs, research publications, events, and outreach related to stream and river ecosystems, in both forested and urban areas.

Center for Streamside Studies
As of September 1, 2002, the Center for Streamside Studies and the Center for Urban Water Resources Management merged to form the Center for Water and Watershed Studies , providing an opportunity for a strong regional center on water and watershed studies to develop. The goals of the former centers, research, education, and information transfer will continue under the broader umbrella of regional watershed studies encompassing diverse aquatic and human environments. The Center for Streamside Studies was created in 1987 as a result of the controversies concerning the management of forest, fish, wildlife, and water resources in the Pacific Northwest. The Center for Urban Water Resources Management was established in 1991 with a more explicit focus on the consequences of urban land development on the region's water resources. By joining together, we believe that the students, faculty, and our off-campus collaborators can improve the value of our research and educational outreach to the region as a whole.

Highlights / What's New Conservation programme aims to preserve one of the world's most important complex of ecoregions From the tropical evergreen forests that shroud the mountains of Vietnam and Laos to the flat flooded forests and the dry open woodlands in Cambodia, the forests of the lower Mekong consist of four of the world's most important ecoregions. But this natural wealth is threatened by large-scale logging, hydroelectric development, and the pressures of an impoverished population, which, combined, have dramatically reduced the forest canopy. Home to a diverse range of precious plants and animals, the protection of these ecosystems is essential for the planet's diversity. With this aim, WWF Indochina is assisting with the management of protected areas, promoting sustainable forestry practices and encouraging the participation of local people, so that they benefit from the conservation of forest resources. Unparalleled number of species unknown to science recently discovered Some of the most majestic mammals roam the grasslands and rainforests of Indochina, along with species previously unknown to science, including the saola, first announced by WWF in 1992. But they, along with the once plentiful tiger, elephant and rhinoceros, are threatened with extinction. WWF is actively working to protect these species by preserving their habitat, fighting their commercial trade and supporting eco-tourism.

What's New?
The Smithsonian Marine Station (SMS) is a research center specializing in marine biodiversity and ecosystems of Florida. Research focuses on the Indian River Lagoon and the offshore waters of Florida's east central coast, with comparative studies throughout coastal Florida. The Station is a facility of the National Museum of Natural History , a part of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, and serves as a field station which draws up to 100 top scientists and students each year from the Smithsonian and collaborating institutions around the world. These scientists investigate the plants and animals in the ocean and Indian River Lagoon and the physical processes associated with these habitats. Information uncovered at the Marine Station is published in scientific journals and forms the basis for effective public policies, conservation efforts, sustainable resource management and enlightened development patterns.

Welcome to the Forest Ecosystem Dynamics (FED) Project WWW Server
BACKGROUND INFORMATION. The Forest Ecosystem Dynamics (FED) Project is concerned with modeling and monitoring ecosystem processes and patterns in response to natural and anthropogenic effects. The project uses coupled ecosystem models and remote sensing models and measurements to predict and observe ecosystem change. The overall objective of the FED project is to link and use models of forest dynamics, soil processes, and canopy energetics to understand how ecosystem response to change affects patterns and processes in northern and boreal forests and to assess the implications for global change. See Conceptual Diagram for model schematic. The Forest Ecosystem Dynamics World-Wide-Web server has been online since July 1994. The FED server was created for the dissemination of project information, to archive numerous spatial and scientific data sets, and demonstrate the linking of ecosystem and remote sensing models.
