PAPER DELIVERED BY JOHN SEED TO THE ECOPSYCHOLOGY SYMPOSIUM AT THE AUSTRALIAN PSYCHOLOGICAL SOCIETY'S 28TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE, GOLD COAST, QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA, 2/10/94 I take "ecopsychology" to mean psychology in service to the Earth.
ECO, PSYCHE, LOGOS: Knowing that the Earth is home to our soul.
In spite of the modern delusion of alienation, of separation from the living Earth, we are NOT aliens, we belong here. The human psych too is Earth-born, th philosophy of nature that has been exerting a profound effect on environmentalism in the last decade. To deep ecology the world is seen not as a pyramid with humans on top, but as a web. We humans are but one strand in that web and as we destroy other strands, we destroy ourselves.
After thousands of years of Judeo-Christian conditioning, we have inherited shallow, fictitious selves, disconnected from nature. Unaware of it's dependency on the tree on which it grows, we are like a leaf imagining some benefit from the logging of the tree.
Even though our IDEAS may have changed, all of the institutions of our society and the very language we speak, conspire to bind us in this outmoded and now (wedded to our powerful technologies and growing populations) deadly way of perceiving our world.

Millions of American children have been diagnosed with a disease called Attention Deficit Disorder. In its classic form, it is the inability to concentrate on whatever society thinks the child should be paying attention to at the moment usually schoolwork or adults. These children are often punished for their behavior, which is considered both "anti-social" (by definition) and counterproductive since the child should probably be learning something rather than letting his (ADD is usually a diagnosis for boys) attention wander. Environmentalists, when they try to focus the minds of some members of the public, particularly politicians, on environmental issues, often seem to be in the same position as teachers trying to get Johnny to read the whole page and think about it. Johnny will look at the page, but within moments his attention will wander to the window, to Susie, to Fred, to the floor, back (briefly) to his book, and so on. The politicians, similarly, will listen to the arguments to preserve open space, to outlaw the use of pesticides adjacent to schools, to end the practice of using resources at a non-sustainable rate, but then they return to the "tried and true" ideas of supporting growth, attracting business, expanding infrastructure. How can environmental advocates focus the minds of others on the issues that they think are important? The answer, as suggested by the contributors to the book Ecopsycology, is to understand how people relate to the earth, their true values and motivations.

DESCRIPTION (back to top) This pathfinding collection shows how the health of the planet is inextricably linked to the psychological health of humanity, individually and collectively. As such, it is sure to become a definitive work for the burgeoning ecopsychology movement, which is both a new beginning for environmentalism and a revolution in modern psychology. Collected here are writings from the premier psychotherapists, thinkers, and eco-activists working in the field, including: James Hillman, world-renowned Jungian analyst, relating the "one core issue for all psychology" - the nature and limits of human identity - to the condition of the planet Chellis Glendinning, author of My Name Is Chellis and I'm in Recovery from Western Civilization, alerting us to "the link between the psychological process of addiction and the technological system"

I have raised the question, "When the Earth hurts, who responds?" The answer is, I believe, that each of us now experiences in some wayphysically, psychologically, economically, or politicallythe pain of the Earth. Sarah Conn Nothing so clearly identifies the West as the distrust of the powers of the Earth, focused at last upon the undomesticatable wildness within. Paul Shepard Our era is deserting this world. Albert Camus The Earth calls continually. She calls us with beauty, sometimes truly breathtaking, sometimes heart-wrenching, and always provocative and visceral. We are embedded in a multidimensional web of beauty. Laura Sewall
What You Will Learn: Psychologist James Hillman once wrote that he could no longer clearly distinguish in his private practice between the patient's sickness of self and the sickness of the world. Yet such a distinction must be attempted, for how else can we know how the sufferings emanating from our surroundingsfrom smoggy skies and blackened trees, fouled oceans and crowded freewaysfall down into our moods, dreams, conflicts, and relationships? And, from the other side of it, how can we listen into the places we inhabit if our usual fog of daily distractions gets in the way?

Radical Ecopsychology: Psychology in the Service of Life (Suny Series in Radical Social and Political Theory) > Customer Review #1: Important addition to Ecopsychology

An excellent overview of ecopsychology. A bit philosophical with lots of academic language, but its well worth the work of reading. It contains a lot of radical ideas. This is an important addition to the growing body of text about ecopsychology.
Radical Ecopsychology: Psychology in the Service of Life (Suny Series in Radical Social and Political Theory) > Customer Review #2: Eco-literati wannabe This book is basically just a collection of eco-literati quotes. It proves only one thing: people will try to buy themselves into any club with hyper-flattery. Unless you really think you have to, dont bother to read this book. It contains virtually nothing new. And contrary to David Abrams endorsement, it is neither poetic nor profound. The author spends more than half of the book explaining why and how he wants to talk about Radical Ecopsychology (as if that were a valid concept to begin with) and then spends the rest of the book apologetically emphasizing that he can only vaguely indicate what Radical Ecopsychology would look like, if he were really writing about it. Then theres a little eco-polemic thrown in for good measure.

Prepared for the panel on "'Nature Religion' as a Theoretical Construct: Reflections from an Emerging Field" held at the American Academy of Religion annual meeting, Orlando, Florida, on 23 November 1998. Daniel C. Noel
Vermont College of Norwich University As a psychologist of religion, I should like to make some observations about the relationship between the human psyche and the other-than-human natural world, in particular as one tradition in psychology sees that relationship. Let me begin by quoting words I take to be both exemplary for the tradition in question and pertinent to our discussion of "nature religion": Yet there is so much that fills me: plants, animals, clouds, day and night, and the eternal in man. The more uncertain I have felt about myself, the more there has grown up in me a feeling of kinship with all things. In fact it seems to me as if that alienation which so long separated me from the world has become transferred into my own inner world, and has revealed to me an unexpected unfamiliarity with myself This striking passage appears on the last page of C.G. Jung's autobiography

Ecopsychology: Restoring the Earth, Healing the Mind > Customer Review #1: A slap in the face for psychoanalysis

An eminately scientific book. Uses phenomenological and imaginally accurate approaches to its topic, and offers rarely quoted material from psychoanalysis which will provoke irritated responses from those supporting the "accepted canon" of psychoanalytic literature. Little known (though accurate) citations of Freud and Jung broaden the discussion of psychology to include environment, to the chagrin of the traditional psychoanalytic establishment which gives little value to environmental influences on psychological health. Views presented here describe how an empathic relation with the environment is being dumbly, and politically, grandstanded as a regression to "the noble savage". Contrary to this "regressive" view the authors offer a vision in which person and environment are mutually effected. The book will prove its value with its revolutionary conceptual vision, and its practical application of ideas.

ECO-PSYCHOLOGY
With THEODORE ROSZAK
Hello and welcome. I'm Jeffrey Mishlove. Today we are going to explore echo-psychology. With me for the first of a three part series is Dr. Theodore Roszak, a professor of history at California State University at Hayward, a leading social critic and an author of numerous books including The Making of a Counterculture, Where the Wasteland Ends, Person, Planet, and most recently , The Voice of the Earth. Welcome Ted. TR: Good to be here Jeff. JM: It's a pleasure to be with you. In your book The Voice of the Earth, you outline what hopefully will become an entirely new discipline which you call eco-psychology. I think the best way to introduce our viewers to this subject is to talk about what psychology has been up until now. And I think maybe the best place to start would be with Freud himself who was the founder of psychotherapy. TR: That's where I decided to start the examination of the psychiatric mainstream. It provides a good baseline. As Freud, whatever else has to be questioned and revised his work as most of the important questions. And even though I disagree with many answers he came up with, I thought the questions where well worth addressing. And so I used Freud and his influence on later figures, positive or negative, as a starting point for a reexamination and a revisioning of the psychiatric tradition in the modern Western world. JM: Well, one of the issues that Freud did address was the environment itself in some very limited sense wasn't it?
