SHAMANIC COUNSELING
AND
ECOPSYCHOLOGY
An Interview with Leslie Gray
SLOANE: What is ecopsychology? GRAY: Ecopsychology is an emerging field that recognizes that you cannot have sanity without sane relationships with your environment. Currently in the U.S., groups of cutting-edge thinkers have been participating in dialogues aimed at the creation of a new profession combining sensitivity of the psychotherapist with the expertise of the environmentalist. SLOANE: Is there a practice that accompanies ecopsychology or is it a body of thought? GRAY: Right now, it's mainly a body of thought, but fortunately, those who are forging this new field will not have to reinvent the wheel. We have only to look at the cross-cultural practices of perennial shamanism to find effective models of applied ecopsychology. SLOANE: What do you mean by perennial shamanism? GRAY: Shamanism is the oldest form of mind/body healing known to humankind. It involves the use of altered states of consciousness for the purpose of restoring well-being to those who are experiencing ill-health or helplessness. Shamanism is estimated by archeologists to be at least forty thousand years old. It's been practiced perennially -or continuously-by virtually all indigenous peoples up to today. Only in the West were its practices essentially eradicated, because of the so-called Enlightenment. SLOANE: How does shamanism relate to ecopsychology?

    Ecopsychology: A Reconaissance
    by Theodore Roszak
The preface from The Voice of the Earth:
    An Exploration of Ecopsychology
Today, a similar series of lectures might draw its material from reports of ozone depletion, toxic waste, and the greenhouse effect. These commonplace environmental problems have become the psychopathology of our everyday life. They reveal a condition of the soul for which Freud would have had no name. Ecopolitics ecophilosophy ecofeminism ecoconsumerism , even ecoterrorism The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual macrocosm microcosm For the better part of two hundred years, keeping these two realms divorced and not even on speaking terms has been the signal endeavor of rational thought and sound science. Matter to one side, mind to the other. Out there , the objective; in here What the new cosmology lacks is the moral consensus that philosophers and artists once bestowed upon the Newtonian worldview. That consensus held for as long as science grounded itself in divine authority and vouched for the importance of human reason. Nothing has been more futile than our effort over the past few centuries to establish values and define sanity within a cultural context that finds no place for the sacred and views life as a marginal anomaly in the universe. The cosmology that gave us that picture of the human condition has now faded from the scene. The time is ripe for a new dialogue between scientific intellect and human need.

I take "ecopsychology" to mean psychology in service to the Earth. ECO, PSYCHE, LOGOS: Knowing that the Earth is home to our soul. In spite of the modern delusion of alienation, of separation from the living Earth, we are NOT aliens, we belong here. The human psyche too is Earth-born, the result of 4000 million years of continuous evolution and the complex, exquisite biology from which psyche emerged inevitably remains the matrix, the grounding of any sane psychology. We have all heard the news:Dr. Raymond Dassman, Professor of Biology, University of Califoria: "The 3rd World War has begun: it is being waged against the Earth." Most scientists agree that a million or more species will become extinct between now and the turn of the century, a rate of extinction some thousands of times the natural background rate. etc. etc. etc. We have all heard the news. Yet it has not changed our behavior except in rather trivial ways.

To help us develop the wisdom of the heart, the wisdom of peace, we must turn to Mother Earth. "You know Grandson, the Great Spirit, Wakan Tanka, has given all people wisdom," my grandfather told me. "To every living thing he has given something special. Some people receive their knowledge and understanding through books. In your life, Grandson, you too must read and study books, but remember to take with you on your journey only those things that bring more unity within yourself and others, that bring goodness and understanding and help us to serve one another in better ways." from innerself.com article Developing the Wisdom of the Heart by Phil Lane Jr. [left] excerpted from book Architects of Peace : Visions of Hope in Words and Images by Michael Collopy Irene Hardwicke Olivieri : Paintings

Bringing Nature's Wisdom into Our Daily Lives
Nature knows how to create balance and harmony in all aspects of life and when necessary
to heal and regenerate itself. As part of Nature, we have this ability too. The good feelings
we have when we spend time in Nature are evidence of this truth. Ecopsychology, the study of the relationship between our mental and physical well-being
and the natural environment, provides insights into how we can learn from Nature to
reconnect with our innate abilities to live in harmony and balance in all aspects of our
life from our health to our work and our relationships.

    BOOK REVIEW:
Ecopsychology: Restoring the Earth/Healing the Mind
edited by Theodore Roszak, Mary E. Gomes, and Allen D. Kanner (S.F. Sierra Club Books, 1995).
    by Harold W. Wood, Jr.
This collection of 26 essays by leaders in the new field of ecopsychology is in three parts: (1) Theoretical Perspectives, (2) Ecopsychology in Practice, and (3) Cultural Diversity and Political Engagement. While the topics covered are numerous and eclectic, and collection of writers diverse, it seems that the whole book is geared toward reaching the final third. That is to say, the intent of the book is intensely political, in the sense of using ecopsychology to contribute to protection of the Earth. The writers featured include such luminaries as Theodore Roszak, Lester Brown, Paul Shepard, Joanna Macy, David Abram, and our own Universal Pantheist Society board member William Cahalan. Some are environmentalists, but perhaps most of the authors are clinical psychologists. The central part of the book is not the only part to emphasize the practical; even "Theoretical Perspectives" comes from people with profound actual experience or expertise in the field. One essay that stood out as being important to Pantheists was "The Ecology of Grief" by Phyllis Windle. As I have argued elsewhere (
