Body strengthened by calcareous ossicles. Have "tube-feet" usually ending in a sucker. Tube feet in rows and operated hydraulically. Used for food collecting and/or walking. Cushion Star ( Asterina exigna ): found in variety of cryptic colours. Possibly omnivorous scavenger. Mouth at centre of disc and stomach everted (pushed out of body) when feeding. The large, thorny red or purple starfish found in the same area feed on bivalve molluscs by pulling valves apart with tube feet. The stomach of the starfish is then everted and the flesh of the prey is digested in its own shell. Found in Balanoid and Cochlear Zones Sea cucumber Cucumaria sykion ): Tentacles protruding from the oral (mouth) end; gathers particles as the animal moves slowly over the substance. The tentacles are withdrawn and cleaned at intervals. When attacked, the animal shoots out a mass of sticky threads from the oral end. Found in the Balanoid and Cochlear Zones under stones. Sea urchin ( Parenchinus angulosus ): this spherical animal has long rigid spines for locomotion and protection. Feed on algae, using a complex system of teeth called "Aristotle's Lantern". Found in a variety of colours when alive but the "shells" of dead animals found on the beach are green.

    (Norwegian pigghuder). Phylum echinodermata.
    http://www.seawater.no/fauna/Pigghuder/
    (Norwegian: pigghuder Phylum: Echinodermata
Echinoderms are only found in the sea. No species exist on land or in fresh water. The name originates from Greek and means spiny skin. Not all have spine skin, although it is quite common. Most echinoderms live their adult lives on the bottom, clinging to the ground with hydraulic suckers. Hydraulics (sea water) is also used to transport nutrition around in the body. Sperm and eggs are released in the water. The larvae live their first phase in the water before they attach themselves to the seabed.

The phylum Echinodermata consists of animals with unusual characteristics that set this phylum apart from other phylums. Animals in the phylum Echinodermata include: sea stars, brittle stars, sea urchins, sand dollars, sea cucumbers, sea lilies, and feather stars.
Characteristics of Echinoderms: *Move with hundreds of suction cup-tipped appendages called tube feet
*Have endoskeletons which are hard, spiny, or bumpy internal skeletons covered by a thin epidermis.
*Have pedicellarie which are pincerlike apendages
-use for protection and for cleaning surface of body
*There are about 6000 species of Echinodermata
*Found in all oceans> none found in freshwater or on land
*All have radial symmetry which enables them to sense food, predators, and many other things surrounding them in their environment
*Some examples are... sea stars, brittle stars, sea cucumbers, and sea lilies
    Fun Facts
*Some sea stars can have more than 40 rays *Echinoderm means "spiny skinned" *A sea star can capture, hold, and eat things underwater as big as fish and crabs

Mass Mortality in Diadema antillarum (Echinodermata:Echinoidea): A Large-Scale Natural Experiment in Herbivore Removal James Engman
Henderson State University INTRODUCTION Rapid, widespread changes in coral reef community composition, overall health, and metabolism have become increasingly obvious over recent years. Even before the advent of recent, highly publicized, global coral bleaching events, changes in percent coral cover were well-documented and of concern to some researchers. Numerous causes have been implicated in the observed changes, but the relative importance of most of them has yet to be established. These include changes in water temperature, eutrophication, overfishing, toxic chemicals, disease organisms, and algal growth. The extent to which these changes reflect long-term natural cycles is also unknown, although some studies (Greenstein et al. 1998) have demonstrated that the changes observed in recent decades are inconsistent with long-term taxon abundance characterizing the Pleistocene/Holocene periods. We seem to know little of the incidence and importance of disease as a force in community structure in marine ecosystems. It appears, however, that diseases are potentially important factors involved in structuring these systems. Seagrass, corals, seals, fish, mollusks, and kelp have all experienced major disease events in recent years, and the frequency of such events seems to be increasing. In the Caribbean alone, 28 major epidemics have been documented in a wide variety of taxa since 1980 (Harvell et al. 1999). In most cases, however, a lack of baseline data and observations makes interpretation of these events in a temporal perspective nearly impossible. Numerous causes contribute to the occurrence of such events, including climatic variability, environmental stresses, and long-range transport introducing pathogens into new habitats.
