Phylum Echinodermata
Echinoderm, common name for about 6000 living species constituting a phylum of marine animals, such as starfish, brittle stars, sea urchins, sand dollars, and sea cucumbers. They usually show a superficial five-part radial symmetry, and generally are equipped with peculiar tube feet. The phylum name is derived from the spiny skin. The larval stages of this distinct and highly modified group are rather like those of the acorn worm, suggesting a relationship to chordate animals. In later development, however, the left side of the body grows at the expense of the right, and the adults are quite unlike any other animals. Structure An echinoderm such as the starfish typically has a mouth surrounded by five arms that bear minute, fleshy tube feet with which the animal clings and crawls. The tube feet are supported by a complex internal hydraulic system that is inflated with seawater. Some echinoderms, especially brittle stars, crawl or swim by moving their arms. Often, as in sea urchins, rows of tube feet extend along the body surface, and arms are absent. The spines are particularly well developed in sea urchins. The skeleton, made up of calcium carbonate, may form a large proportion of the body, or, as in some sea cucumbers, it may be greatly reduced. The fossil record shows that the five-rayed pattern is a late evolutionary acquisition, and deviations from it are common. The animals have a well-developed gut, but the nervous and circulatory systems are simple. Echinoderms are slow-moving and without complex behavior patterns.

Echinodermata CUSHION STARS by Ron Barrett Common Cushion Star Asterina gibbosa
Rockpoolers who have visited the south and west shores of Britain will be familiar with this small pentagonal sea star with its green, orange or blue-grey livery. It is locally common on south-west, west and north-west coasts.
Bionomics
Asterina gibbosa is found from the lower shore down to 30 metres. It prefers the underside of stones, in fairly exposed locations, where there is some sand and gravel and abundant organic matter on which it feeds. Aquarium study has shown that this animal is also a carrion feeder, quickly homing in on any dead carcass, even another cushion star. Tank reared specimens do not, generally, stay out of sight as they do in the wild. This is due to the light intensity, the animal being highly sensitive to bright sunlight. Low light aquaria are easily tolerated.
Reproduction
This species will readily reproduce in an aquarium environment, even in the presence of predators. Usually in late May or early June groups of individuals will be seen clustering together, a sign that egg laying is imminent. This can happen anywhere in the tank and the eggs may even be shed straight into the water. They number up to 1000, have a diameter of 0.5 mm and are usually pale orange. If not consumed they hatch in about 20 days. The parent takes no part in the proceedings once the eggs are laid. Asterina gibbosa is a protandrous hermaphrodite. It matures as a male at about 2 years old before entering the female phase 2 years later at about 20 mm diameter. It lives for up to 7 years.

Echinodermata Greek echinos = sea urchin, derma = skin. Marine animals that are radially symmetrical (most species) and contain a unique water vascular system, and tube feet that are used for movement, respiration, protection (spines) and assist in the capture of food.
The Echinodermata are exclusively marine, and most species are intolerant of immersion in low salinity water. One remarkable observation is that they are rarely settled on by barnacles, mussels and other fouling organisms.
Cushion Star, Asterina gibbosa , with the Shore Urchin, Psammechinus miliaris Photograph by Robert Jones (Trowbridge) The Cushion Star is only found on the shore and in the seas to the south and west of the British Isles. The Purple-tipped Shore Urchin has a more widespread distribution but is not particularly common between the tides, although it seem to be known from most rocky coasts where it is usually found attached to the underside of rocks near the low spring tide mark.

Echinoderms (Echinodermata) is a phylum of marine animals found in the ocean at all depths. This phylum dates back to the lower Cambrian period and represents about 7000 living species and 13000 extinct ones. 6 classes made it to the Modern Era:

GAULT ECHINODERMATA Next to the Foraminiferida and Ostracoda, disarticulated parts of the animals comprising the Echinodermata (echinoids, asteroids, ophiuroids, comatulids, roveacrinoids and isocrinids) are the most commonly found fossils in residues washed from bulk-samples. Complete but invariably crushed tests of the heart-shaped echinoid Hemiaster asterias Forbes and H. bailyi Forbes occur throughout the Lower Gault, most frequently in Beds III, VI and VII. The regular echinoid Polydiadema wiltshirei (Wright) is a Lower Gault species; and Typocidaris gaultinus (Forbes) is characteristic of Bed X. Columnals and other parts of the isocrinid Nielsenicrinus cretaceus (Leymerie) (= Pentacrinus fittoni of authors) are also found in Bed X. The mobile Comatulids Glenotremites aequimarginatus (Carpenter) and Paleocomaster leveni (Carpenter) occur in the Gault of Folkestone and the micro-crinoid Styracocrinus peracutus (Peck) is common in Beds III and X..

An introduction to the biology, classification and ecology of Seacucmbers,Sea-stars, Sea-urchins and Starfish of the phylum echinodermata.
http://www.earthlife.net/inverts/echinodermata.html
The Phylum Echinodermata
Etymology:- From the Greek Echinos for half and Derma for skin.
Characteristics of Echinodermata:-
1)Possess 5-rayed symmetry, mostly radial, sometimes bilateral.
2)Body has more than two cell layers, tissues and organs.
3)Body cavity a true coelom.
4)Most possesses a through gut with an anus.
5)Body shape highly variable, but with no head.
6)Nervous system includes a circum-oesophageal ring.
7)Has a poorly defined open circulatory system.
8)Possesses a water vascular system, which hydraulically operates the tube feet or feeding tentacles.
9)Without excretory organs. 10)Normally possesses a subepidermal system of calcareous plates 11)Reproduction normally sexual and gonochoristic. 12)Feeds on fine particles in the water, detritus or other animals. 13)All live marine environments. Because of their calcareous skeleton many echinoderms fossilise well and we have a good record of their evolutionary history derived from more than 20,000 fossil species. They first evolved about 600 million years ago in the Precambrian along with many of the other major phyla. The first echinoderms (called carpoids) did not have any radial symmetry which shows that this characteristic was acquired later in the group's evolutionary history. Echinoderms are often difficult animals to kill and many have well developed powers of regeneration. Early attempts to control the Crown-of-Thorns starfish by chopping it up into several pieces merely resulted in helping it disperse as each piece grew into a new animal. Echinoderms are protected from most predators by their spines, never-the-less some are eaten by other echinoderms and some by human beings. The gonads of Sea Urchins are eaten in several places around the world, both raw and cooked and are considered to be very tasty. Also in Asia the body wall of certain Sea Cucumbers is eaten, this contains over 50% digestible protein so it is valuable nutrition wise as well as tasty, it is called Trepang.
