http://oceanlink.island.net/oinfo/intertidal/echino.html
Echinoderms are an exclusively marine group! They include such organisms as: seastars, sea urchins, sea cucumbers and sand dollars. "Echino" means "spiny", and "derm" means "skin" - so these are the spiny-skinned animals. If you pick up a sea urchin, the reason for this name quickly becomes apparent! All echinoderms have a 5-point radial symmetry. The skeleton is composed of spiny, calcareous ossicles, and is found under the skin - so echinoderms have an "endoskeleton" just like us! A special water vascular system circulates throughout the Cross-section through a seastar arm. animal. This system is important for many body functions, such as respiration, digestion, circulation and locomotion. Echinoderms all have "tube feet" which are used for attachment and motion. The feet do not have any muscles, and instead are controlled by hydraulics. Seastars have the amazing ability to shed arms to escape from predators and then to regenerate them later on. Seastars also have small claws called pedicellaria that cover their surface and prevent settlement of other organisms. Sea cucumbers will spit out their guts and then re-grow them in order to distract a predator! These are pretty amazing animals! CLASS ASTEROIDEA Dermasterias imbricata (Leather Star)

Phylum Echinodermata Class Asteroidea (seastars) Dermasterias imbricata (leather star) This sea-star has slightly webbed rays resembling that of the Patiria miniata . Commonly found with 5 rays up to 12 cm in length, the leather star has a smooth, slippery skin that feels like wet leather. Its body color is blue-gray mottled with red or orange. It possesses a large, high disk at the center of the body and the tips of its arm are frequently upturned. The odor the leather star produces reminds many of the scent of strong garlic. Patiria miniata (bat star or sea bat) This stubby sea-star has usually 5 (sometimes 4-9) arms which measure up to 10 cm that resemble short webbed rays, which account for its common name. It varies in color from purple to red to yellow, and may be mottled or plain. Commonly found on or under rocks overgrown with surf-grass or algae, it can also be found attached to the sides of concrete harbor walls. Pisaster ochraceus (ochre or common sea-star) This abundant organism is a strong predator of shellfish in the marine community. Its arms extend up to 28 cm in length

When on a foreshore forage, you will undoubtedly find some echinoderms. These include:
  • Seastars (Classes Crinoidea Asteroidea Ophiuroidea Sea Urchins (Class Echinoidea) ... Sea Cucumbers (Class Holothuroidea)
  • There are many different types of each found at the Marine Discovery Centre. The characteristic which groups these animals together is the internal calcareous skeleton. Most have a body plan based on five or multiples of five, with five arms, five rows of tube feet (small legs with suckers used for movement, food capture, adhesion and respiration), five pairs of gonads etc. They lack a head but have a mouth region, usually on the lower surface. A unique feature of this group is the water vascular system, involving features such as a circular canal, madreporite (external opening) and tube feet. Echinoderms also have the amazing ability of regeneration, capable of regrowing broken off arms. Some species can also grow into new individuals from just an arm that is released (asexual reproduction). A few exceptional species, such as the vulnerable species Patiriella vivipara found locally, bear live young.
