Press Release Description The Safe Drinking Water Act directs the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate the quality of drinking water, including its concentration of radon, an acknowledged carcinogen. This book presents a valuable synthesis of information about the total inhalation and ingestion risks posed by radon in public drinking water, including comprehensive reviews of data on the transfer of radon from water to indoor air and on outdoor levels of radon in the United States. It also presents a new analysis of a biokinetic model developed to determine the risks posed by ingestion of radon and reviews inhalation risks and the carcinogenesis process. The volume includes scenarios for quantifying the reduction in health risk that might be achieved by a program to reduce public exposure to radon.

Arsenic in drinking water
Rezaul Morol, a young Bangladeshi man, nearly died from arsenic poisoning caused by drinking arsenic-laden well-water for several years. The doctor advised Rezaul to stop drinking contaminated water and eat more protein-rich food such as fish. Since then Rezaul feels a lot better and is happy that his skin is healing (Photo and original story: Asia Arsenic Network) Arsenic in drinking-water is a hazard to human health. It has attracted much attention since recognition in the 1990s of its wide occurrence in well-water in Bangladesh. It occurs less extensively in many other countries also. The main source of arsenic in drinking-water is arsenic-rich rocks through which the water has filtered. It may also occur because of mining or industrial activity in some areas. WHO has worked with other UN-system organizations to produce a state-of-the-art review on arsenic in drinking-water.

Locating Safe Drinking Water After a disaster, it is possible that water supplies will be temporarily cut off or become contaminated. Because you must have water to survive, it is important to know how to locate and purify drinking water to make it safe. Water Sources In the home. Melt ice cubes, and use water from the hot-water tank, the toilet tank (not the bowl) and water pipes. Hot water tank. Turn off the power that heats it, and let the tank cool. Then place a container underneath and open the drain valve at the bottom of the tank. Don't turn the tank on again until water services are restored. Toilet tank. The water in the tank (not the bowl) is safe to drink unless chemical treatments have been added. Water pipes. Release air pressure into the plumbing system by turning on the highest faucet in the house. Then drain the water from the lowest faucet. Outside the home. Rain water, spring water, and water from streams, river, lakes, and coiled garden hoses can be used after it is purified.

    INTRODUCTION
1 This publication summarizes the information necessary for interpreting drinking water quality analyses performed by water testing laboratories. It focuses on testing results obtained from drinking water supplies from public water systems
and non-public water systems (home wells). It is intended primarily for homeowners, but environmental organizations, health departments, and commercial water testing laboratories and others should find this material of interest and value. For readers who are not familiar with the terms and chemical expressions used in the text, a brief list of definitions follows the main text.

    79. The Watershed: Why Mineral Water Is The Healthiest Water To Drink
A look at bottled water, demineralized water, chlorination, bathing and asbestos in drinking water.
    http://watershed.net/mineral.htm
Why Mineral Water is the Best Drinking Water
Bottled Waters: Are All Created Equal?
Bottled water is big business. And it usually tastes better than what comes out of your tap. But is it "healthy water?" It depends. Ask yourself: "Is the water hard? Is it moderately high in TDS?" Most bottled water labels in the US do not give the information you need to know the answers to these questions. Request a complete water analysis from the company. Keep in mind many bottled waters are simply processed water using distillation, reverse osmosis, de-ionization or filtration. Frankly you can do this yourself and save money. With over 700 brands of bottled water available in the US, around 80% are processed water. Purchase only natural spring or artesian well waters that come closest to the "healthy water" criteria - hardness 170 mg/l and TDS 300 mg/l. References:(47) Michigan Mineral - Premium Natural Water has a Hardness of 260 mg/l and TDS 362 mg/l.
Purified Water: To Drink or Not to Drink
De-mineralized water has little or no minerals. This is the result if you use a distiller, a reverse osmosis unit (RO), or de-ionization (ion exchange resins). However, the research on heart disease and cancer shows a healthy water is hard and moderately high in TDS (total dissolved solids). Why do people purchase these de-mineralized or water softening systems? Usually their thinking goes something like this. "I know I should drink water, but it's so polluted with chlorine, chemicals and toxic metals, that it's not safe. So I'll get rid of these harmful things and all will be OK."

THE MAGNESIUM WEB SITE was last updated on May 24, 2004
Are you getting enough magnesium to keep yourself healthy? "According to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (1977) there have been more than 50 studies, in nine countries, that have indicated an inverse relationship between water hardness and mortality from cardiovascular disease. That is, people who drink water that is deficient in magnesium and calcium generally appear more susceptible to this disease. The U.S. National Academy of Sciences has estimated that a nation-wide initiative to add calcium and magnesium to soft water might reduce the annual cardiovascular death rate by 150,000 in the United States."
