Everything You Wanted To Know About Drinking Water,
But Didn't Know Who To Ask
I developed this web site to provide a comprehensive resource for anyone searching for information about the safety and quality of their drinking water. Topics discussed include: Contaminants That Could Be In Your Drinking Water
(lead, chlorine, disinfection byproducts, cryptosporidia, giardia, bacteria, endocrine disrupters, pesticides, etc.) What Various Contaminants Can Do To Your Health
(with an emphasis on children and pregnancy) What's The Best Drinking Water Purification Method For You? (filtration, reverse osmosis, distillation, bottled water, KDF, etc.) Terrorism and Drinking Water
(everything I have been able to find about the subject on the web) I have distilled the results of many hours of research into the discussions and the lists of drinking water related sites on the pages indexed to the right. I hope that the information here will be helpful in your search for answers to this important health issue. Although the site discusses contaminants found in water from both municipal water companies and from private wells, the treatment methods discussed, are mostly Point of Use (POU) - water is treated at the point where it will be used for drinking, cooking, etc. Many private well water problems, bacteria, iron, heavy metals, pH imbalances, etc., need to be treated either at the well, or as the water enters the home. I do not go into much detail about these treatment methods, but I provide references to some sites that do discuss these treatment options. The majority of web references for which I have provided links can be considered authoritative. The sites you will find listed here include:

KidsHealth Kids Staying Healthy Fabulous Food
What do you, the trees, and a hamster have in common? Give up? You all need water . All living things must have water to survive, whether they get it from a water fountain, a rain cloud, or a little bottle attached to the side of a hamster cage! It might not seem like it, but water is the most necessary nutrient of them all - so necessary that people can't survive for more than a few days without it. More than half the weight of your body is water - if you weigh 60 pounds, fewer than 25 of those pounds are bones and squishy insides, and the remaining pounds are made up of water. So let's see what water does for our bodies . . . jump in and get wet!

National Primary Drinking Water Regulations National Primary Drinking Water Regulations (NPDWRs or primary standards) are legally enforceable standards that apply to public water systems. Primary standards protect public health by limiting the levels of contaminants in drinking water. Vist the list of regulated contaminants with links for more details.
National Secondary Drinking Water Regulations
National Secondary Drinking Water Regulations (NSDWRs or secondary standards) are non-enforceable guidelines regulating contaminants that may cause cosmetic effects (such as skin or tooth discoloration) or aesthetic effects (such as taste, odor, or color) in drinking water. EPA recommends secondary standards to water systems but does not require systems to comply. However, states may choose to adopt them as enforceable standards.

Unlike people in many parts of the world, Americans take clean, safe drinking water for granted. We shouldn't. Scientists estimate that each year up to 7 million Americans become sick from contaminated tap water, which can also be lethal. NRDC safeguards our drinking water by helping to ensure that the Safe Drinking Water Act is carried out effectively, by pushing for citizens' right to know about contaminants in their water and by conducting scientific research and public education. NRDC has also waged a campaign to protect the drinking water of millions of New York City residents by keeping pollution out of the city's 19 upstate reservoirs.

Grading Drinking Water in U.S. Cities
This June 2003 NRDC study of drinking water quality in 19 U.S. cities finds that pollution and deteriorating, out-of-date plumbing are sometimes delivering drinking water that might pose health risks to some residents and unless steps are taken now, tap water will get worse. The report issues grades to each municipal water system studied in three problem areas water quality and compliance, source water protection, and right-to-know compliance and outlines a plan for protecting the nation's drinking water supply.

20. EPA Response To US House Committee On Science
Information about a September 2000 letter sent to the U.S. House Committee on Science by the Environmental Protection Agency that stated that tens of millions of Americans may be at risk from drinking fluoridated drinking water.
http://home.att.net/~gtigerclaw/EPAresponse.html
US Environmental Protection Agency reveals that tens of millions of Americans may be at risk from fluoridated drinking water. George Glasser September 5, 2000: In a twenty-two page, response to the United States House Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment, Chairman, Charles Fox, Assistant Administrator USEPA, admitted that after more than five decades of fluoridation at least tens of millions of Americans could could be adversely affected by fluoridated drinking water. Fox wrote:
  • "EPA is in the process of developing medical fact sheets to provide medical practitioners (doctors, nurses, dieticians, etc.) with health data relative to drinking water contaminants that can be then used in counseling patients. This work has just begun, and will initially focus on the elderly, children and pregnant women. It will later be expanded to cover other at-risk populations. In addition, EPA has made it a requirement for public water systems to provide their clients with health effects information on contaminants in their water supply, including fluoride [Consumer Confidence Rule FR 63(160): 44512-44536]."*

Charles Fox acknowledges the Toxicological Profile for Fluorides (US Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, 1993) page 112 statement:
