Introduction
The Centre for Digital Signal Processing Research was established at King's College London on 1st February 2002. The Centre is actively engaged in internationally leading research in the analysis, application and design of new algorithms for digital signal processing. Particular interest is placed in the research and development of signal processing for array processing, biomedical engineering, pattern recognition, software radio, spectral analysis and wireless communication applications.
Courses
The Centre offers a taught MSc in Digital Signal Processing , this is available in three exciting streams: Multimedia Signal Processing, Intelligent Signal Processing and Signal Processing for Communications. This MSc is supported by the EPSRC. It is also possible to undertake an MSc in Digital Signal Processing by research, this entails a reduced amount of teaching and focusses on a more substantial research project. If you wish to know more about our MSc courses or would like to enquire about undertaking a PhD, then please view our pages on postgraduate courses at king's or contact: pgadmissions.engineering@kcl.ac.uk

Prof. Brian L. Evans , Spring 2004, MW 5:00 to 6:30 PM, ENS 127 In the lab, students design, implement, and test a voiceband modem. A voiceband modem reference design and simulation is available in LabVIEW. Students implement modem subsystems in C on a Texas Instruments TMS320C6701 programmable digital signal processor. The C6000 family is used in DSL modems, wireless LAN modems, mobile wireless basestations, and video conferencing systems. Students test their implementations using test equipment and National Instruments LabVIEW software. The teaching assistants will be veterans Mr. Bishwarup Mondal and Mr. Ahmet Toker . In Spring, EE 345S lab sections will meet in ENS 252B at the following times: T 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM Toker, T 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM Mondal, W 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM Mondal, and TH 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM Toker. In addition to these lab hours, each TA will be present an additional three hours in the lab. Students work in teams of two in the lab. A maximum of 16 students are in each lab section. All of the figures in this paper are screen images from S.P.E.C.T.R.U.M. ( S ignal P rocessing for E xperimental C hemistry T eaching and R esearch/ U niversity of M aryland), a Macintosh program we have developed for teaching signal processing to chemistry students. SPECTRUM is designed for post-run (rather than real-time) processing of "spectral" or time- series data (y values at equally-spaced x intervals), such as spectra, chromatograms, electrochemical signals, etc. The program enhances the information content of instrument signals, for example by reducing noise, improving resolution, compensating for instrumental artifacts, testing hypotheses, and decomposing a complex signal into its component parts. SPECTRUM was the winner of two EDUCOM/NCRIPTAL national software awards in 1990, for Best Chemistry software and for Best Design
Features
  • Reads one- or two- column (y-only or x-y) text data tables with either tab or space separators.
  • Displays fast, labeled plots in standard resizable windows with full x- and y-axis scale expansion and a mouse- controlled measurement cursor.
  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of two signals.

What's new

May 07th, 2004 Our implementation of the ITU G.723.1 speech codec for Analog Devices Blackfin DSP has just been released. More speech algorithms to come in the next few weeks, e.g. G.167 Acoustic Echo Canceller, GSM fullrate speech codec and more. May 01st, 2004 We welcome ten new member countries of the European Union. March 18th, 2004 We have released our implementation of the ITU G.729A/AB speech codec for Analog Devices Blackfin DSP. A number of speech and telecom algorithms for this platform will be released within the next few months. Please inquire here for more details. February 10th, 2004 Blackhawk's new PCI-JTAG emulator is now shipping. This high-performance emulator supports high-end and legacy DSP from Texas Instrument alike. Running in Windows 2k or XP it supports RTDX (realtime data exchange) and Advanced Event Triggering on DSP families supporting these features. Please, click here for more information February 8th, 2004 Look out for our new TMS320VC33 DSP board. With 75MIPS, lots of memory and 2 high speed UART channels, it can easily outperform and replace micro-controller systems. Please, click here for more information January 27th, 2004

Ulterior album update is here at last!!! At long, long last The Music Page has thrown off the shackles of the evil Spaceports and Terabyte Online Solutions. What that means for you is that the long-awaited release of the 2nd edition of the S2DF album, Ulterior, is finally upon us. Ulterior began as an EP at a low bitrate, but now it has grown a bit. There's some interesting music on it, so give it a listen.

Pipe Organs. A truly fascinating subject for the music-minded. The pipe organ is one of the most remarkable creations of the ancient world, and one of only a handful of areas where medieval Europe demonstrated both technical prowess and creative flair. References on this subject are often convoluted by the interchangability of jargon terms. Here we try to sort that out. Final draft now posted! Read on...

W9GR Digital Signal Processors
As Published in QST Magazine and the ARRL Handbook
updated March 2003 We are sorry to announce that the DSP-3 digital signal processor is SOLD OUT! Texas Instruments, the manufacturer of the DSP CPU and audio codec chips we use, has obsoleted these parts. So, since we can't buy the key parts of the DSP-3 anymore, there will be no more DSP-3s. I really would like to do a DSP-4, using a more modern DSP chip that would hopefully stay in production for more than a few years. I've been planning on doing one since the DSP-3 went out of production. Unfortunately, many things have been distracting me from doing a DSP-4 design - more construction projects (barn and driveway), my day job (designing digital TV transmitters), etc. I can't really put a timetable on the DSP-4 development or even guarantee that it will ever happen. All I can say right now is that it is something that I would like to do. So, keep an eye on this web page, and check in every six months or so to see if I have anything to announce. We will leave this web page up, even though it describes a product which is no longer available. Most or all of the features in the DSP-3 will be offered in the DSP-4, along with some new features.
