Desert Ecology
The Desert appears to be dull and lifeless from the road, but that's not what the classes would find out when they were there. The Field Science class each year takes a trip to Hell's Half Acre lava trail, off to the south of Highway 20. There are lots of tests that can be done in the desert. They used a line transect, to see what kind of plant life could survive in this dry climate. A line transect is a 100 foot sting with dots on it every foot. It is stretched across the landscape. Then one person scopes down from each dot and tells the recorder what he sees. He recordes one of the following: dirt, rock, litter, grass, forb, shrub, or tree. These tests help the students learn what kind of plantlife is in the desert. Each year the classes go on a full day field trip to Craters of the Moon . They visit here to get an idea of how proffessionals do their signs to show important information, do some journal entries, and have some fun touring the caves. For the Skyline Native Plant Ecosytem the students must build a knowledgable sign on a plant or on a certain ecosystem. Back to Main Page

The flora, fauna, and geological uniqueness of the Death Valley ecosystem are explored by visiting nature centers and walking self-guided nature trails in the park. Teachers have the opportunity to develop integrated lesson plans using the desert ecosystem as a base. While the park is open year round, it is recommended that the field requirements be completed in the fall, winter, or spring because of high summer temperatures. This course may be taken concurrently with SOC 909 - Death Valley: A Cultural History and SOC 934 - Our National Parks.

The course will start on Friday night, the 28rd with an introduction
to the ecology of the Mojave National Preserve. Over the remainder of the course there will be field activities to investigate the Preserve's major geological features, its perennial plants, insects, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
Saturday's field trip will visit Willow Gulch in the Cima Volcanic Field, with observation of its plant and reptile life, cinder cones and lava flows, the Granite Mountains, the historic Kelso Train Depot, and the Devil's Playground at Kelso Dunes. Sunday's field trip will visit the historic copper smelting site at Copper Wells, the Cima Dome, and Cow Cove Petroglyph Site. Monday's field trip will visit higher desert localities along the Cima Road and Cedar Canyon. These visits will expand our understanding of the history of the region by the study of local well-preserved petroglyphs, the evidence of early settlers, and some of the more recent history of the Eastern Mojave Desert.
Combined fees for room and board for the duration of the course are $160.00.

San Francisco Chronicle The desert ecology: another war victim
David Lazarus There's one element of the war in Iraq that's everywhere yet virtually nowhere in coverage of the conflict: the desert. On TV, all that most of us see is a vast, inhospitable sea of ocher that, at best, provides a drab backdrop for tanks and troops in action or, at worst, rises up in fierce sandstorms that bring the battle to a crawl. Bay Area desert enthusiasts say the desert is in fact a living entity, and that heavy military equipment whether at war in
