Natural History
May, 1998 by Peter J. Marchand
What might-seem at first a ground almost devoid of life, however, turns out on dose inspection to harbor a surprising diversity of some of the toughest organisms on eartha microbiota of remarkably drought-resistant and heat-tolerant algae, cyanobacteria (formerly called blue-green algae), fungi, lichens, and mosses. In the best of situations, these organisms thrive on the surface, forming a distinct crust held together by sticky polysaccharide secretions and constituting a true pioneering communitythe only living ground cover in some deserts of the world. These crusts are sometimes a conspicuous feature of the soil surface, as in the sagebrush deserts of the American West, where they may produce pillars several inches high and resemble miniature canyon lands. In the hot Sonoran Desert, the brown and desiccated crust usually escapes notice altogether by the untrained eye. But when it rains, the photosynthetic members of the community respond quickly, greening within hours.

Desert Ecology: An Introduction to Life in the Arid Southwest
- Book Review, by John Sowell
From the Publisher

"Explore the life cycle of the yucca and creosote bush, trace the wanderings of the gila monster and tenebrionid beetle in the rhythms of the desert at night." "Unlike books that merely identify which plants and animals live in the desert, Desert Ecology explores how these organisms live where they do. Sowell explains in terms that nonspecialists will understand and physiologic and behavioral adaptations that enable plants and animals, even humans, to survive and persist in such inhospitable places as the Intermountain, Mojave, Sonoran, and Chihuahuan Deserts. "This book is for the curious, " says the author - for all who enter the "wasteland" on foot or in their imaginations."BOOK JACKET.

Desert Ecology
June 5th- 7th, 10th -15th
Granite Mountain Research Station
  • This course is being offered jointly by Fresno City College and CSUF.
Participants will receive 2 units of credit from Fresno City College, and 2 units of upper division credit from CSUF's Extended Education Office. A stipend will be issued to all Fresno Collaborative for Excellence in the Preparation of Teachers (FCEPT) Fellows that attend and successfully complete the requirements of this course.

This course will focus on the following 3 objectives:
1. Teach the basic knowledge of desert ecology.
2. Develop an inventory of birds, mammals, and reptiles for the GMRS.
3. Develop a research plan, set up data sheets, gather data, and analyze the data using very basic tools. Participants will be encouraged to do real science, design a sampling scheme, understand the limitations imposed by the scheme, gather data, and do appropriate analysis of those data. We also want our data to contribute in a real way to the science being done at GMRS.
The things you do here will be directly applicable to your classroom!

Birds ECOLOGY Introduction Deserts form when weather patterns and/or geographic land forms create an environment where lack of water limits biotic productivity. Water may exist in an unusable form such as ice, or may be absent altogether. Frequently, potential evapotranspiration exceeds annual precipitation. There are four basic types of desert: high pressure, rain shadow, interior continental and coastal. The desert here in southeast Utah, however, defies simple categorization.
The Colorado Plateau
Some consider the Colorado Plateau to be a northern extension of the high-pressure Sonoran desert. Others consider it to be an eastern extension of The Great Basin, a desert in the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. High pressure deserts generally form at the middle latitudes (30 degrees) in each hemisphere where warm, dry air masses descend toward the earth's surface. Rain shadow deserts form in localized high pressure zones caused by warm, dry air descending from mountain ranges. The Colorado Plateau is also in the interior of a large continent, far away from significant water sources. Each of these factors contributes to the arid climate of the Colorado Plateau.
A High Desert
Because of the elevations throughout the region, with a mean of around 3,000 feet and peaks over 12,000 feet above sea level, the Colorado Plateau is also known as a cold or high desert. Though low humidity allows greater penetration of solar radiation, winter air temperatures frequently drop below freezing. In turn, summertime air and especially ground temperatures can reach levels lethal for many organisms. After sunset, the ground rapidly loses heat to the night sky and ambient air temperatures may drop significantly before dawn. Temperature fluctuations of over 40 degrees in a 24-hour period are not uncommon. As a result of these extreme conditions, the plant and animal communities found here have evolved unique adaptations, and many species are endemic to the region.

Rain is limited because cool air sinks into a warmer region. As air warms its capacity to hold water vapor increases and rain cannot form. The great deserts of the world occur at about 30 degrees latitude on both sides of the equator and extend poleward in the interiors of the continents. These regions are areas of falling, warming air. Deserts can also be produced by the rain shadow effect of mountain ranges. As air masses approach from west to east in North America and meet a mountain range such as the Rockies, the air rises, cools, and loses much of its water vapor as rain or snow. The air falls on the other side of the mountains, warms, and creates a rain shadow on the eastern side of the mountains. There are four major deserts in North America; the Chihuahuan Desert (Northern-Central Mexico and southwestern Texas), the Sonoran Desert (southern Arizona and northern Mexico), the Mojave Desert (Southern California, Baja California, and western Arizona), and the Great Basin Desert of Utah and Nevada with isolated pieces extending as far north as southern British Columbia.

Felix-Henningsen, University of Gießen between March 15 - 23, 2001. 10 Students from the universities of Gießen, Münster and Bremen and 7 students from the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, participated in the field and laboratory course - focused on soil science and soil zoology - plus evening seminars and in the subsequent two-day excursion through S Israel." Desert ecology 2 - Namib: PD Dr. Hartmut Koehler and Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Heyser were leading a 3-week excursion (17.03 - 09.04.2001) through Namibia , introducing the students to vegetation, fauna and landuse problematics under different geographical conditions. Visits of different projects aiming at ecological and in parts social-cultural questions and intensive contacts with the University of Namibia and the Polytechnic Windhoek including visits of lectures, barbeques with the students of both universities and discussions with the professors and the vize-chancellor were organised. These activities founded the base for future projects and inspired the cooperation between the University of Bremen and Windhoek.
