America's Deserts: Guide to Plants and Animals
by Marianne D. Wallace. "This colorful field guide for all ages illustrates and identifies the plants and animals of North America's four major desert regions: Sonoran, Mojave, Chihuahuan, and Great Basin." A Desert Bestiary: Folklore, Literature, and Ecological Thought from the World's Dry Places
by Gregory McNamee. "Following the model of the medieval Latin bestiaries, Gregory McNamee has written a book at once naturalistic, folkloristic, and literary, made up of short essays on forty-three animals of the world's deserts. These essays discuss the creatures as they are and as they are imagined, and bring their natural lives and histories vividly to the page." Ecology of Desert Systems
by Walter Whitford. "Whitford incorporates a systems perspective to the examination of how arid lands work and proper management guidelines. Chapters cover landforms, geomorphology, and vegetation; characterization of desert climates; wind and water processes; patch-mosaic dynamics; adaptations; primary production; consumption and secondary production; decomposition and nutrient cycling; desertification; and monitoring and assessment." [ Book News The Secret Knowledge of Water: Discovering the Essence of the American Desert
by Craig Childs, Regan Choi (Illustrator).

An Introduction to Life in the Arid Southwest
    John Sowell
"An energetic start quickly became a trudge; we glanced back frequently towards our point of departure, an air-conditioned vehicle. Not only did the hot air feel like a blast from a smelter’s furnace, but within minutes the reflected sunlight was doing perceptible damage to any exposed skin. I’m sure I was sweating more than I ever had before, yet my skin was dry. . . . We found ourselves blinking rapidly to keep the eyes moist. After a few more minutes, we turned back for the car, leading our youngest child who would no longer open her eyes." Unlike books that merely identify what plants and animals live in the desert, Desert Ecology is a comprehensive but accessible introduction to how these organisms live where they do. Beginning with an overview of the Intermountain, Mojave, Sonoran, and Chihuahuan Deserts, Sowell presents the topographic and the meteorologic conditions that created these regions. He continues with a thorough examination of physiologic and behavioral adaptations that enable plants and animals, even humans, to survive and persist in these inhospitable places.

Desert Ecology in the Classroom This website is intended to provide ideas and examples of concepts, lesson plans, field trips, and resources to help high school teachers teach desert ecology in the Tucson, Arizona area. Though field trip ideas and resources are local, many ideas can be used in any part of the country, and can also be adapted for use with younger students. These ideas are based on available programs and ideas from educators, as well as my studies of science education, but they have not been tested in actual classrooms. This is an undergraduate honors thesis, created by Elizabeth Karasz. It was completed in December 2002, under the supervision of Dr. Katrina Mangin, through the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, at the University of Arizona in Tucson: http://eebweb.arizona.edu If you would like to read more about my thesis, read my statement about this project, or just the abstract (a shorter version).

    27. Desert Ecology Scavenger Hunt
Students will demonstrate their understanding of desert ecology concepts through identifying these concepts in the desert environment.
    http://eebweb.arizona.edu/links/desert/ScavengerHunt.htm
Desert Ecology Scavenger Hunt Back to Desert Plant Adaptations Lesson Plan Have the students demonstrate a grasp of the biological concepts learned in class by locating and identifying these concepts in the desert environment around them. This project can be done on a class field trip to a desert area, in a desert area around campus, if available, or as an extra credit project for students to do on their own. The desert scavenger hunt is a great activity for a school with a desert field nearby, or on a long field trip to a desert area, in which an assessed assignment is desired. This may be most appropriate after studying desert ecology for a while so that students are familiar with all of the concepts. The list of objects and concepts to be found is available to be printed as a worksheet, but may be modified so that it is appropriate for the class and location. Questions pertaining to flowers and pollination my be appropriate only in the spring. The teacher should also examine the place where students will perform this to ensure that all concepts can be found. When students find the item that they are looking for, they should write down either the name of the plant/animal or a description if they are unable to identify it. If it is a situation such as species interaction or nurse plant association, they should describe the situation, such as what species are involved, what is happening, and/or where it is occurring. Several subjects are not self explanatory and students will have to apply knowledge that they have gained in class to identify it in the real world situation.

Please exercise patience and politeness at all times. If you have a conflict or problem, try to figure it out among yourselves, or approach the Instructor for assistance. Always be careful with the lab equipment - it is very expensive! Additionally, other students are dependent on the same equipment. We cannot afford, financially or time-wise, to have broken equipment. Some equipment used in lab will be assigned to you or your group. For these instruments, make a thorough list of the materials included, and label them with your group name or number. This equipment is your responsibility, and all of it must be returned at the end of the semester. Other equipment will be shared by everyone in the class. Collectively we will be responsible for its well-being and upkeep. Lastly, and most importantly, always clean up after yourselves and tidy up the lab before you leave.

    Desert Ecology 2003
Three days and two nights at Desert Studies Center, Zzyzx, California in the Eastern Mojave. Projects: Plant density and soil particle size differences among four sites on a desert bajada. Desert ant feeding preferences among carbohydrate (oatmeal), nectar (sugar-water) and protein (tuna/chicken) food sources. Tan and happy after watching ants for 24 hours. What a crew! Those big red ones were all over the tuna. Robert has zoom-lense eyeballs and can see the ants from 6-feet away. Those little ones like the sugar-water on the purple sponge. Ahh. Nothing like the shade of a pickup. Team Sand Dune discusses the plan for the day. Early morning rodent survey with Team Lower Bajada. Team Young Bajada on the way down for lunch. Fern and Audra of Team Old Bajada. Susana and Shaun on the young bajada site. Sunil watches for any signs of activity. Black ants only came out in the morning and evening. Audra and Rebecca found the salt deposits as interesting as the ants. Two desert muses rising from a wisp of sand on Soda Dry Lake.

On TV, all that most of us see is a vast, inhospitable sea of ocher that, at best, provides a drab backdrop for tanks and troops in action or, at worst, rises up in fierce sandstorms that bring the battle to a crawl. Bay Area desert enthusiasts say the desert is in fact a living entity, and that heavy military equipment whether at war in Iraq or in training in Southern California does extensive damage that can take decades to heal. "There's much more to the desert than meets the eye," said Steve Tabor, president of Desert Survivors, an Oakland nonprofit group that monitors environmental laws and leads excursions into the wild. "It's a living ecosystem, and it's getting trashed."
