http://www.biopark.org/iquitos.html
Enjoying Loretano Culture in Iquitos... Iquitos is a romantic and seductive city with a rustic charm and unique culture reflecting an intriguing history. Located 4 degrees south of the equator, the ethnic character is drawn from many indigenous tribes and European and Chinese immigrants who began to populate the area in the mid-1800's. The economic heyday of Iquitos was the era of the rubber boom from about 1880 to 1912. During this time vast fortunes were amassed because the Iquitos region was the world's foremost source of raw rubber. Great injustice was perpetrated upon the indigenous people during this time by foreign entrepeneurs who ruthlessly exploited them for labor. Many tribes were decimated and some eliminated entirely as a result of this exploitation. A number of buildings constructed during the rubber era, many adorned with ceramic tiles imported from Portugal and Italy, remain in use in central Iquitos, especially along the old riverfront called the Malecon Tarapaca. The mestizo people are peaceful, friendly and industrious, most with close lifestyle connections to the rivers and rainforests which surround Iquitos for hundreds of miles in all directions.

http://www.spc.uchicago.edu/coa/
In Brief
The 42 researchers who comprise Chicago's Center on Aging are drawn from the departments of Economics, Psychology, and Sociology at the University of Chicago; the University's Graduate School of Business, Pritzker School of Medicine, School of Social Service Administration, and Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies; affiliates at other universities; and NORC. Academic demographic and economic research, often interdisciplinary, and the dissemination of research-based information about the aging of the population are our primary activities. We are supported by a grant from the National Institute of Aging (NIA) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Research support comes from NIH, the National Science Foundation, and private foundations. We are part of the academic research centers of NORC and the University of Chicago and are located on campus, across the Midway, at 1155 East 60th Street. Many of our researchers also work at the Population Research Center (PRC), another of the academic research centers; their demographic work unrelated to the study of aging is addressed more thoroughly on the PRC web site.

The Hopkins Population Center (HPC) was established in 1971 with a mandate to stimulate and facilitate interdisciplinary population research throughout the Johns Hopkins University. The HPC is unique among NICHD-funded centers in two respects: its location within a school of public health, and its administrative location within a single academic department, the Department of Population and Family Health Sciences. From its inception, the vision underlying the HPC has been the highest quality research, resulting from interactions among population researchers from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, aided by state of the art research infrastructure. Today, the HPC serves more than 50 research associates who represent disciplines from Anthropology to Microbiology and who enjoy ever-growing collaborative links with researchers in other institutions in the US and abroad.

U.S. Demography and Elections
Demography (the size, statistics, and characteristics of populations, such as ethnicity, gender, religion, age, income, education, party affiliation, region of residence)have clear political implications. Regression (sophisticated statistical) analysis demonstrates the strong correlation between demographics and voting patters. Nevertheless, this is not a static phenomenon. Not only do census data indicate that the demography of the country is continually changing. Polls, focus groups, and election results demonstrate changes in the voting patterns, party affiliations, and political power of particular demographic groups. This section deals with demographic issues as they may impact U.S. elections in general, and the '96 elections in particular. Home HOME Marbled Murrelets ( Brachyramphus marmoratus ) are small seabirds that live along the northern Pacific Coast of North America. They are listed as Threatened by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) and are on the provincial Red-list in British Columbia. The species is also listed as Threatened in Washington, Oregon and California. Marbled Murrelets are secretive birds with a unique life history and it is only recently that scientists have begun to learn about the details of Marbled Murrelet biology. In response to their Threatened listing, a Marbled Murrelet Recovery Team was established in 1993 to plan the long-term conservation of Marbled Murrelets. The Recovery Team includes representatives of federal and provincial government agencies, industry and non-governmental organizations. Research conducted by members of the recovery team and their colleagues has increased our knowledge of Marbled Murrelet biology. Nest sites have been located and information about Marbled Murrelet distributions and movements has been collected. This new knowledge is fundamental to revising the Recovery Plan for the Marbled Murrelet. This web site provides an introduction to Marbled Murrelet biology and management issues in B.C., and provides examples of some of the types of research and monitoring that are currently being conducted.

http://healthpolicy.stanford.edu/CDEHA/
The Stanford Center on the Demography and Economics of Health and Aging (CDEHA) promotes the study of trends in demography, economics, health, and health care, and the effects of these trends on the well-being of the elderly. CDEHA conducts research in four program areas: 1) Effects of medical technology on costs, health outcomes, and physical and psychological well-being and choices of the elderly
2) Longitudinal and cohort studies of medical care, costs, and health and economic outcomes of older populations, in the United States and other countries, with particular emphasis on economic and health interest in outcome disparities
3) The interrelationships of health characteristics, economic status, functional status, and health care throughout the life cycle
4) Comparative international studies of demography, health, health care, and health policy affecting the aged, including analysis of health system efficiency in addressing the health care needs of the elderly
Benefitting from an university environment supportive of multidisciplinary research, CDEHA has access to a unique combination of clinical expertise and strength in economics and other disciplines relevant to the program areas; the ability to draw upon an extensive foundation of ongoing projects and research support; and collections of U.S. and international data relevant to the program areas, along with the expertise to work with large longitudinal databases.
