The island was discovered on May 21 st , 1502, which, in the Eastern church, is the feast day of St. Helena, mother of the Roman emperor Constantine. Its discoverer was a Spanish navigator in the service of Portugal, . He kept its existence secret until 1588, when the English navigator Captain Thomas Cavendish of HMS Desire visited St. Helena on his return from a voyage around the world. The island soon became a port of call for ships en route between Europe and the East Indies. In 1633 the Dutch formally annexed the island, although they never occupied it. Arms of the East India Company By the late 17 th century, the Island of St. Helena was known to be a welcome landfall on the long journey home from the East Indies, a respite from the ocean, where fresh water and provisions could be purchased. There was the chance that other sailors might be there, with news and gossip of ships and shipping, a chance for crews to recover from the rigours of the voyage and to pray that they might reach home safely. WOMEN IMMIGRANTS 1945 TO THE PRESENT A BIBLIOGRAPHY Compiled by ELEANORE O. HOFSTETTER This bibliography is an effort to collect the current international literature on women immigrants. It is a supplement and update of the publication, Women in Global Migration, 1945-2000: A Comprehensive Multidisciplinary Bibliography that is available from Greenwood Press. The books, journals, essays, government reports and doctoral dissertations listed here treat all aspects of the lives and issues concerning women who are living permanently or for long periods outside their country of origin or who have migrated for fixed periods of time on work contracts. There is one title and author list and several broad subject areas despite the fact that the immigration experience is complex and varied and does not really fit into neat categories.

Austria ... Children Demography is a broad social science discipline concerned with the study of human populations, primary with respect to their size, their structure and their development. Demographers deal with the collection, presentation and analysis of data relating to the basic life-cycle events and experiences of people: birth, marriage, divorce, household and family formation, employment, ageing, migration and death. The discipline emphasises empirical investigation of population processes, including the conceptualisation and measurement of these processes and the study of their determinants and consequences. The field of demography is also concerned with the broader nature of social and economic change, and with the impact of demographics change on the natural environment.

    ABOUT POPULATION REVIEW
Population Review , a peer-reviewed journal of demography and population studies published since 1957, welcomes original articles on all aspects of human population problems, solutions, issues, trends and events as they relate to the developing countries of the world in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Population Review also accepts articles that examine population topics in the developed world, particularly as they relate to the developing world. Articles that are multidisciplinary in orientation (incorporating theoretical concepts and perspectives from anthropology, biology, ecology, economics, environmental science, epidemiology, geography, history, mass communications, medicine, political science, public health, psychology and sociology, among others) are highly desired. Population Review publishes original articles from distinguished, internationally recognized scholars. On occasion articles from relatively unknown, often younger contributors are given space in the journal. In addition to featured articles, open editorials that focus on contemporary population-related issues and events worldwide are published along with brief research reports and announcements. Finally, space is given to book reviews.

Brief History Directory of Officers District Map Demography ... Suggestions/Comments KANATHUR -KANNAN'S UR- KANNUR Kannur district derived its name from the location of its headquarters at Kannur town. The old name 'Cannanore' is the anglicised form of the Malayalam word Kannur. According to one opinion, 'Kannur' is a derivation from Kanathur, an ancient village, the name of which survives even today in one of the wards of Kannur Municipality.Another version is that Kannur might have assumed its name from one of the , deities of the Hindu pantheon, a compound of two words, Kannan (Lord Krishna) and Ur (place)making it the placeof Lord Krishna. In this context, it is worth mentioning that the deity of the Katalayi Sreekrishna temple was originally installed in a shrine at Katalayi Kotta in the south eastern part of the present Kannur town. It is one of the few institutional studies to really take a deep and careful look at the problem. Among the conclusions: Barring unexpected changes in fertility rates, or politically unthinkable migration scenarios, Europe, and indeed the rest of the developed world, will have to live with smaller labour forces (assuming unchanged participation rates and the maintenance of the present retirement ages) and a greater burden on those in employment (assuming no productivity changes) due to the sharp increase in old age dependency ratios.
