3.1 High-volume and high-speed data processing
Real-time astronomical and geophysical data processing and on-line automated data reduction are key to efficient observing. Higher and higher speed computer processors are becoming available and are needed to keep pace with the growth in the number of array pixels for optical/IR programmes and with the data rates expected from proposed optical and mm arrays and ground-based geophysical instruments. Remote and robotic observing, coupled with growth in data volume, necessitates the development of highly efficient, loss-less compression algorithms. More powerful and sophisticated techniques of data visualisation are required to allow astronomers to analyse their data quickly and accurately. Scientific data processing within the instrument on space science instruments will enable developments such as an efficient event trigger for high data rate or burst memory mode. Particle Physics detectors: To handle the extremely large number of signals produced by future Particle Physics experimental apparatus will require high-speed, high-volume data transmission and acquisition systems. The overall system has to include remote control and monitoring, custom-designed trigger logic, large programmable multi-processor systems, high-quality user interface, image processing, simulation and reconstruction.

What does data acquisition and control equipment do? In their simplest form, dynamometers provide information on engine or vehicle speed, torque, and sometimes power. It is easy to keep track of this limited amount of data manually. Current engine development requirements however call for much more information such as pressures and temperatures or air and fuel consumption. Many sensors are used and the amount of data collected becomes overwhelming for manual recording or analysis. Data acquisition systems measure and record the electrical output signals from sensors and relieve test operators from the manual recording of vast amounts of data. Data acquisition systems come in many levels, from fairly basic systems with a few measurement channels and limited data acquisition rates (number of measurement samples per second) to very sophisticated systems with hundreds of channels and millions of samples per second. As data is recorded, stored, and processed in digital format, computers can be used for data display, processing and evaluation. This capability has opened a whole new realm of data analysis possibilities, such as multi-channel graphs and test overlays, real-time calculations, or statistical analysis. COURSE DESCRIPTION
The fundamentals of use of microcomputer data acquisition are developed and used with several different data acquisition and control boards and transducers. Microprocessor fundamentals and the application of instrumentation concepts and experimental design are emphasized. Elementary control of various biosystems problems including thermal and mechanical systems, based on acquired data, is also covered. This course relies significantly on a set of "hands on" laboratory projects, with each assignment covering a different aspect of data acquisition and control, including programming.

Abstract
An innovative method and a novel research apparatus are being developed and tested to measure the thermal conductivity of non-Newtonian fluids while they are subjected to shearing flow. The emphasis here is given to the apparatus' instrumentation and computerized data acquisition and control, while a detailed description of the mechanical design and test results will be presented elsewhere. The measurement and control are accomplished and integrated by using a computerized data acquisition system and a comprehensive virtual instrument, developed using the LabVIEW application software. In addition, this system allows for easy modification and enhancement of virtual (software) instrument by modification of the software program. Data Acquisition and Control System
The data acquisition system is based on the autonomous data transfer from the digitizing modules (LRS 3377 and LRS 4300B) into the CES dual port buffer memories HSM 8170 working in the flip-flop mode. The transfer utilizes the FERA bus. From buffer memories, the data is copied onto a DLT cartridge over the VME and SCSI busses under control of the RIO2 controller (CES, PowerPC processor) running the MBS data acquisition system [ ] from GSI under the real-time operating system LynxOS. The maximum acquired data rate approaches 7 MB/s (sustained). At the same time, the system delivers up to 1 MB/s sample data for on-line monitoring and event reconstruction.
Setting of HV channels, signal thresholds, trigger conditions etc. (``slow control'') is made using the commercial ADC-DAC modules with a help of the LabView software.
The whole system is capable of handling up to 12,000 sense wires. In the real experiment ( P T in -decay) the system was proved to be robust and stable over two months of continuous data taking.
