The ever amazing Boris Anthony has an excellent post on why we may find it so difficult to care about Sudan and similar situations..caring requires a belief in our own power to do something..
The Feedster number of posts for Sudan is up to 4229, from 4145.

122. GMDH Method For Data Mining, Forecasting, Polynomial Neural Network Algorithms,
Tutorials, software, online books and articles on forecasting and systems modeling, optimization in expert systems, pattern recognition, data mining and knowledge discovery, from a research group at the Glushkov Institute of cybernetics.
http://www.gmdh.net/index.html
Group Method of Data Handling * was applied in a great variety of areas for data mining and knowledge discovery, forecasting and systems modeling, optimization and pattern recognition. Inductive GMDH algorithms give possibility to find automatically interrelations in data, to select optimal structure of model or network and to increase the accuracy of existing algorithms.
This original self-organizing approach is substantially different from deductive methods used commonly for modeling. It has inductive nature - it finds the best solution by sorting-out of possible variants.
By sorting of different solutions GMDH networks aims to minimize the influence of the author on the results of modeling. Computer itself finds the structure of the model and the laws which act in the system.
Group Method of Data Handling is a set of several algorithms for different problems solution. It consists of parametric, clusterization, analogues complexing, rebinarization and probability algorithms. This inductive approach is based on sorting-out of gradually complicated models and selection of the best solution by minimum of external criterion characteristic. Not only polynomials but also non-linear, probabilistic functions or clusterizations are used as basic models.
GMDH approach can be useful because:
  • The optimal complexity of model structure is found, adequate to level of noise in data sample. For real problems solution with noised or short data, simplified forecasting models are more accurate.

Former Chief Medical Officer of Finland
December 6, 2000 In 1948 Norbert Weiner published a book, Cybernetics , defined as a neurological communication and control theory already in use in small circles at that time. Yoneji Masuda, "Father of the Information Society," stated his concern in 1980 that our liberty is threatened Orwellian-style by cybernetic technology totally unknown to most people. This technology links the brains of people via implanted microchips to satellites controlled by ground-based supercomputers. The first brain implants were surgically inserted in 1974 in the state of Ohio, USA and also in Stockholm, Sweden. Brain electrodes were inserted into the skulls of babies in 1946 without the knowledge of their parents. In the 1950s and 60s, electrical implants were inserted into the brains of animals and humans, especially in the U.S., during research into behavior modification, and brain and body functioning. Mind control (MC) methods were used in attempts to change human behavior and attitudes. Influencing brain functions became an important goal of military and intelligence services. Thirty years ago brain implants showed up in X-rays the size of one centimeter. Subsequent implants shrunk to the size of a grain of rice. They were made of silicon, later still of gallium arsenide. Today they are small enough to be inserted into the neck or back, and also intravenously in different parts of the body during surgical operations, with or without the consent of the subject. It is now almost impossible to detect or remove them.

"Compared to the analytical procedure of classical science with resolution into component elements and one-way or linear causality as basic category, the investigation of organized wholes of many variables requires new categories of interaction, transaction, organization, teleology..." Ludwig von Bertalanffy "This new development has unbounded possibilities for good and for evil." Norbert Wiener , Cybernetics, 1948
Introduction
Many of the concepts used within the complexity sciences derive originally from work done in the mid 20th Century on Cybernetics (Wiener), based on the earlier work on Information Theory (Shannon), and General Systems Theory (von Bertalanffy). These ideas were all attempts to quantify in a rigorous way the treatment of systems as an interdisciplinary science. In other words they were a break from the old views that specialist subjects required specialist ideas. Additionally cybernetics is concerned with the control of systems, the issues of regulation and stability that also face us in the treatment of complex systems. Most recent work on cybernetics has related to mechanical systems (e.g. robots and bionics), but these ideas have always been more general and here we shall restate their relevance to biological and social situations.
Systems
Systems are the lifeblood of complexity thinking and can be defined as a group of interacting parts functioning as a whole and distinguishable from its surroundings by recognizable boundaries. Systems have properties that are emergent, that are not intrinsically found within any of the component parts. They exist only at a higher level of description (e.g. an engine isn't a feature of valves, pistons, or any set of parts in isolation, they have to be suitably inter-connected).

Tools for Thought by Howard Rheingold April, 2000: a revised edition of Tools for Thought is available from MIT Press , including a revised chapter with 1999 interviews of Doug Engelbart, Bob Taylor, Alan Kay, Brenda Laurel, and Avron Barr. The idea that people could use computers to amplify thought and communication, as tools for intellectual work and social activity, was not an invention of the mainstream computer industry or orthodox computer science, nor even homebrew computerists; their work was rooted in older, equally eccentric, equally visionary, work. You can't really guess where mind-amplifying technology is going unless you understand where it came from.

Abstract: Lev T. Kuzin (19281997) is one of the founders of modern cybernetics and information science in Russia. After getting his Doctor of Technical Sciences degree in the industrial research sphere he joined the Moscow Engineering Physical Institute at the time when there were a few specialists in cybernetics in Russia. A few years later he became a founder of Cybernetics department and a Chair of the section in Applied Problems for Cybernetics in Moscow House for Scientific and Technical Knowledge Propagation. Almost the same time he became a project principal researcher (project Data Bank promoted by the Russian Academy of Sciences), and attracted the teams of researchers to apply the computational models to a field of data and knowledge bases, making the pioneering research in Artificial Intelligence. He was awarded and honored the USSR State Prize for inspiring vision into the future of technical cybernetics and his invention and innovation of key technologies.
