http://anthro.ucsc.edu/cultural.shtml
Cultural anthropologists at UCSC explore the worlds that human actors create through their meanings and practices, within the contexts of power and communication in which they are situated. The thrust of all cultural anthropology, UCSC's department included, is to understand the production and reproduction of practices and meanings from the viewpoints of those who create them. Although in the past anthropologists usually carried out research overseas, today many work in their own societies, and our program reflects both research approaches. Cultural anthropologists at Santa Cruz study an extremely broad range of issues and from a range of perspectives. We consider societies of diverse cultural traditions and economic levels, and the movements of people, objects, and ideas among them. We examine such topics as race and ethnicity, medicine, science, gender, sexuality, the environment, religion, law, popular culture, and politics. And we carry out comparative research that looks at different time periods and geographical locations. Undergraduate and graduate students engage with both theory and method. Cultural anthropology draws upon a range of social theory, including feminism, poststructuralism, political economy, and cognitive science, and students learn how these approaches can contribute to cultural analysis. Ethnographic methods are central to the discipline. In innovative courses, students learn how to carry out anthropological research through interviews, participant observation, surveys, the collection of oral histories, and the interpretation of archives. Students are also encouraged to use the department media lab to develop technical and creative skills in visual and audio media. In addition, students take ethnographic courses that focus in depth on particular areas of the globe, including the United States, Brazil, China, Indonesia, and various parts of Africa.

In Encyclopedia of Cultural Anthropolog y, David Levinson and Melvin Ember, editors. New York: Henry Holt and Company, vol. 4:1345-1351. VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY Visual anthropology logically proceeds from the belief that culture is manifested through visible symbols embedded in gestures, ceremonies, rituals, and artifacts situated in constructed and natural environments. Culture is conceived of as manifesting itself in scripts with plots involving actors and actresses with lines, costumes, props, and settings. The cultural self is the sum of the scenarios in which one participates. If one can see culture, then researchers should be able to employ audiovisual technologies to record it as data amenable to analysis and presentation. Although the origins of visual anthropology are to be found historically in positivist assumptions that an objective reality is observable, most contemporary culture theorists emphasize the socially constructed nature of cultural reality and the tentative nature of our understanding of any culture. There is an obvious relationship between the supposition that culture is objectively observable and the popular belief in the neutrality, transparency, and objectivity of audiovisual technologies. From a positivist perspective, reality can be captured on film without the limitations of human consciousness Pictures provide an unimpeachable witness and: source of highly reliable data. Given those assumptions, it is logical that as soon as the technologies were available, anthropologists attempted to produce wit] the camera the sort of objective research data the could tee stored in archives and made available for stud by future generations (Edwards 1992).

How Environmental Transformations on the Great Plains
Have Affected Human Cultural Development
Humans affect the land wherever they live. To survive, people take from the land the things they need for food and shelter. They adjust to the landscape and climate. The environment becomes part of who people are, affecting their attitudes toward themselves, people in other cultures, and even their views of what is important in their lives. We also know that no matter what their style of life, the environment has an effect on them and sometimes their actions have an effect on the land. We invite you to learn how people have adjusted to the environment of the northern Great Plains and Prairies of North America. You will find out that even the first peoples were affected by the climate. We can learn from their lives. You will see that some of the same factors that influenced the lives of these ancient peoples still affect the lives of Plains people today. You will also see that the activities of the people who now live on the Plains sometimes are harmful to the very environment in which people live.
What are the Great Plains?

really
In one of his philosophical short stories, Jorge Luis Borges reviews "a certain Chinese encyclopedia" which contains a list of the kinds of animals that exist: "(a) those belonging to the Emperor, (b) embalmed, (c) domesticated, (d) suckling pigs, (e) sirens, (f) strange, (g) stray dogs, (h) included in this classification, (i) terrified, (j) innumerable, (k) drawn with a very fine camel hair brush, (l) etcetera, (m) which have just broken the water jug, (n) which, from a distance, look like flies." Quoted approvingly by Foucault in his archaeology of knowledge, Borges' list makes fun of earnest attempts to classify natural things. If you want to know what kinds of animals exist, the answer depends on who makes the classification. But what about the least natural of natural things, then –humans? Do women, professors and people from Bergen exist? That depends on what one sees them with. A few years ago, the term "negro" was debated in the Norwegian press. The standard view among the ethnic Norwegians contributing to the discussion was that "there is no reason why we should not call people Negroes ( negre ) if that is what they are". Note the formulation "that is what they are". It is reminiscent of a widespread use of the term "really". And if one resists, suggesting alternative terms, such as Kenyan, student, man and so on, then one appears, in today's ideological climate, as a dangerous social constructivist (read: irresponsible relativist) or a spineless, politically correct opportunist.
