Paper Archives: 77-36, 88-51, 95-21, 34-120, 63-02. As photographer for John Wesley Powell's expeditions to the Southwest sponsored by the Bureau of American Ethnology and Geological Survey, John K. Hillers documented field research findings. However, because of his brilliant sense of light, shadow, composition, and balance, his photographs are also recognized for their uncommon aesthetic qualities. The inventoried collections include sepia prints and numerous albumen prints at Canyon de Chelly, the Walpi and Jemez Pueblos, and of various scenes taken between 1872 and 1882 along the route of the Atchison, Topeka and Sante Fe Railroad. A set of stereographs by Hillers and other expedition photographers such as Timothy O'Sullivan contain scenes from everyday life, cliff dwellings, and identified portraits of Navajo, Mohave, Zuni, and Paiute. Some of the prints provide a context for the artifacts collected during the Powell expeditions and housed at the Peabody Museum.

Graduate Study in Cultural Anthropology
at Rutgers University The Program Cultural anthropologists in the Department of Anthropology offer ethnographic expertise in several world regions, including Africa, Asia, and the Americas. They combine this with theoretical strengths in the translocal theory that now transcends formerly rigid boundaries of regional specialization. Two important orientations are characteristic the blending of cultural analysis with the analysis of political economy, and the fusing of transnational and global theory with local-level research. Aspects of gender, sexuality and bodies, as well as race, ethnicity, and the nation-state are central for most cultural anthropologists on the faculty. Moreover, our cultural faculty engage and challenge the long history of theories of culture in various sub-disciplines. Approaches range from the historical and comparative to the interpretive, and combine rigorous often multi-sited field research with media analysis, archival work, and linguistic research. Specific research interests include the cultural politics of development in China, Nepal, Kenya, and Tanzania; the cultural construction of the modern nation-state in Africa, China and Europe; transnationalism among South and Southeast Asian diasporic communities; kinship; religion; and agency. These all treat the complex interactions of shifting cultural, political and economic realities.

Cultural anthropology
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Cultural anthropology , also called socio-cultural anthropology, is one of four commonly recognized fields of anthropology Anthropology is the study of humankind (see genus Homo). It is holistic in two senses: it is concerned with all humans at all times, and with all dimensions of humanity. Central to anthropology is the concept of culture, and the notion that human nature is culture; that our species has evolved a universal capacity to conceive of the world symbolically, to teach and learn such symbols socially, and to transform the world (and ourselves) based on such symbols.

Definitions
The word culture comes from the Latin root colere, (to inhabit, to cultivate, or to honor). In general it refers to human activity; different definitions of culture reflect different theories for understanding, or criteria for valuing, human activity. In 1952 Alfred Kroeber and Clyde Kluckhohn compiled a list of over 200 different definitions of

Anthropology at USC Anthropology is the study of humankind in a cross-cultural, social science perspective. At USC, Anthropology consists of Cultural Anthropology, and its subfields, with a small program in Biological Anthropology. The central notions of anthropology, the importance of culture in shaping human behavior and the relativity of culture, have become generally accepted premises within Western society. However, the analysis and understanding of cultural differences-whether in human communities or among other primates, remains the central and unique goal of anthropology.

91. The Cultural Anthropology Of Middle America
The cultural anthropology of Middle Middle America. The variations in these cultures are complex and have not been fully analyzed by anthropologists.
http://www.oakland.edu/~dow/personal/papers/meso/ca_of_ma.html
The Cultural Anthropology of Middle Middle America
Middle America is the culture area that includes all the cultures south of the United States to the borders of Columbia. This is an area of 433,784 sq. km that contained a population of 122,656,331 people in 1992.
Geography
Altitudes in other parts of Middle America vary between sea level and 5,747 m. (18,855 ft) creating a wide variety of temperatures. Rainfall in Middle America also varies widely. Steady easterly trade winds blowing across the Gulf of Mexico deposit large amounts of rain against the eastern escarpment of the Mesa Central and support tropical cloud and rain forest environments. Interior rain shadows make other parts of Middle America, such as the north central plateau of Mexico, into deserts. The north of Mexico is very dry and supported few native cultures. Although agriculture is difficult in the north, the aboriginal inhabitants cleverly adapted it to these dry environments by making use of what rain runoff there was in the valleys and by using river water for irrigation. Today expanded irrigation in the river systems has greatly improved agricultural productivity in the north. South of the Mesa Central the land is lower. It continues to be mountainous until one reaches the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, a low plain connecting the Atlantic with the Pacific coast. The region between the Mesa Central and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec contains two important culture areas: Morelos where temperature and climate favored commercial agriculture, particularly sugar cane, in the last century, and Oaxaca with less rainfall and a warmer temperature. Oaxaca has large Indian populations today.

Cultural Anthropology at the University of Hawai'i
Cultural Anthropology is the study of human nature as it is expressed in all its variations. The field is based on field work in contemporary societies (ethnography) and the comparison of societies past and present (ethnology). While a multitude of theoretical approaches are current in cultural anthropology, our Department espouses no orthodoxy and students are encouraged to develop their own theoretical interests. Although students in virtually all fields of cultural anthropology can be accommodated within the Department, three special programs are Ecological Anthropology and Medical Anthropology , and Discursive Practices , all of which involve collaboration with other disciplines and subdisciplines within anthropology. The faculty specializes in the cultures of Oceania, Southeast and East Asia.

Human populations play a crucial role in shaping tropical forest environments. To isolate the most important variables and processes regulating social and ecological relations – including the symbolic construction of human interactions - we conduct comparative research in humid zones within tropical Africa, Asia and the Americas from a holistic perspective. Our research deals with the following general questions: a. What are the long-term ecological, social and economic consequences of the ways indigenous peoples shape the natural landscape to suit their needs for livelihood and social reproduction?;

The discipline of anthropology studies humankind in all the cultures of the world, both past and present. This study includes humankind's physical development and the wide diversity of lifestyles people have created. The Anthropology major is a liberal arts degree with a broad base of information and understanding about human behavior. The cross-cultural approach of Anthropology provides a framework for understanding the many sub-cultural differences we meet every day. The Anthropology major can open many doors of opportunity and provide valuable training to successfully deal with the fluid and changing of the future. The Anthropology Department provides training in four subdisciplines: cultural anthropology, archaeology, physical anthropology and anthropological linguistics. Using ethnographic, ethnological and ethnohistorical tools, and information supplied by the four subdisciplines, the anthropologist studies cultures and the processes of human development comparatively.
There are four major concentrations available: Anthropology Archaeology Anthropology/Biology Anthropology/Education A minor in Anthropology is also available.
