Introduction to Guide
This subject guide is designed to help the user by reducing the mass of social and cultural anthropology resources that exist on the Internet to a manageable level of complexity. It is arranged alphabetically and separated into different areas of social and cultural anthropology to guide the user to their topic of interest. It provides a mixture of text and directories that contain links to more resources. As a list it is not exhaustive but the information gathered is of interest to the Internet user who is interested in human societies and culture. Furthermore, this guide has listserves and newsgroups which can be subscribed to if the user wants to play a more active role. The user can access this guide at: http://gpu2.srv.ualberta.ca/~crutar/anthro.html.

Common sense about auto design implodes when a child encounters tail fins in the public space of the sidewalk or street. The production of the street as a public space in the age of automobility has also been about the production of human subjects who must negotiate lethal machines traversing local places at high speed. The www-jungle and a 'Netnograf'
The 27 years old German Markus Giesler is not only North America's presumably youngest professor in marketing but also gained some experience as an 'Netnograf': UNISPIEGEL writes that "just like an anthropologist enters the Amazon jungle, Giesler enters the World Wide Web. He classifies the cyber consumers into tribes and researches into their rituals and religions. ... He has observed the Napster community which bootlegs music titles from each other's hard disk. Giesler mocks that they go after the slogan of 'liberty for information', an interpretation of Marx' and Engel's 'abolishment of property'. But instead of some profane internet thiefs he discovered a www-community (or congregation?) who wants to 'cleanse itself from the evil of music consuming culture' through their deeds". in German

    Real Solutions for Real Problems
    Staff Philosophy
The complexity of social interactions, caused by increased inter-cultural and cross-cultural engagements, requires new and innovative strategies for program development and technology transfer. Organizations need additional ideas, expertise and experienced personnel to increase their prospects for success in designing strategies for reaching multi-cultural populations. The staff of the ACARC use applied holistic approach to resolve issues caused by misunderstandings resulting from differences in cultural communication and behavior.
Anthropologists study the differences and similarities, both biological and cultural, in human populations in all periods, and in all parts of the world. Few, if any, other professional or academic approaches offer a comprehensive examination, understanding and methodology to address social issues and human diversity questions. Anthropologists have provided solutions for improving people's lives, and have participated in monitoring the activities of others, e.g., analyzing program interventions; analyzing environmental constraints, both social and biological; examining political structures, economic or subsistence influences; religious constraints, or external influences. While the foundation model used derives from anthropology, specialists from a wide variety of disciplines will be brought together, as necessary, to make the Center's activities holistic.

    Overview of the Library Collections
    Peter Stephen Duponceau (1760-1844),
APS 1791 The American Philosophical Society Library is a major national center for research in the history of the sciences, medicine, and technology. With its roots extending back to the founding of the Society in 1743, it houses over 300,000 volumes and bound periodicals, eight million manuscripts, 100,000 images, and thousands of hours of audio tape. Among the many extraordinary books in the collections of printed materials are first editions of Sir Isaac Newton's Principia , Charles Darwin's Origin of Species , a presentation copy of Thomas Jefferson's Notes on the State of Virginia , the elephant folio of Audubon's Birds of North America (for which the A.P.S. was an original subscriber), as well as a majority of Benjamin Franklin imprints and a significant portion of Franklin's personal library. Manuscript collections range from eighteenth-century natural history, American Indian linguistics and culture , to nuclear physics, computer development, and medical science . The Library is among the premier institutions in the nation for documenting the history of genetics and eugenics , the study of natural history in the 18th and 19th centuries, quantum mechanics , and the development of cultural anthropology in America.

    About
Guidelines JD/MA Program Current Students ... Undergraduate Graduate Faculty Resources Application is encouraged by 12/1/04. However, applications will be accepted through 12/31/04 for Fall 2005 admission. About Theoretical Orientations Cultural anthropology today is marked by the dynamism of the times. No longer just the study of remote societies, the field explores how people produce, inhabit and make sense of all corners and aspects of today's globalized world. The Department at Duke is committed to studying collective identities, however these are defined, and to examining the politics and conditions under which these get attached to, and detached from, specific locales.
The graduate program aims to prepare students who are able to integrate grounded research with theoretical sophistication in doing anthropology sensitive to the challenges and complexities of today's restless world. Our department is on the cutting edge of new debates about globalization and diaspora, popular culture and mass media, nationalism and identity, race and sexuality, and the politics of tradition and modernity. We explore these issues through a range of theoretical orientations that include postcolonial and Marxist theory, feminist and critical race theory, psychoanalysis and psychology.
While believing that students must have a firm foundation in cultural anthropology, we also recognize that our discipline is connected, more than ever today, to related fields across the humanities and social sciences. We thus encourage an interdisciplinary outlook and expect our students to engage with other departments across the campus - History, Literature, Law, Psychology, African and African American Studies, Women's Studies - and with the many interdisciplinary and global initiatives and reading groups for which Duke is well-known.
