    Cryonics
Cryonics is the practice of preserving organisms, or at least their brains, for possible future revival by storing them at cryogenic temperatures where metabolism and decay almost completely stop. A person held in such a state (either frozen or vitrified ) is said to be cryopreserved . Barring social disruptions of their cryopreservation, a perfectly vitrified person is expected to remain physically viable for a period of about 10,000 years, after which time cosmic ray damage has been thought to be irreparable. Many scientists in the field, most notably Ralph Merkle and Brian Wowk, hold that Molecular Nanotechnology has the potential to extend even this limit many times over. Probably the most famous cryopreserved patient is Ted Williams . The popular urban legend that Walt Disney was cryopreserved is false; he was cremated, and interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery Robert Heinlein , who wrote enthusiastically of the concept, was cremated and his ashes distibuted over the Pacific ocean. Cryonics has traditionally been dismissed by mainstream cryobiology , of which it is arguably a part. The reason generally given for this dismissal is that the freezing process creates ice crystals, which damage cells and cellular structuresa condition known as whole body freezer burnso as to render any future repair impossible. Cryonicists have long argued, however, that the extent of this damage was greatly exaggerated by the critics, provided that some reasonable attempt is made to perfuse the body with cryoprotectant chemicals (traditionally

    Cryonics
There's a certain irrefutable logic to cryonics which goes something like this: What have you got to lose? What indeed? If you've got the cash to spare, then why not have your corpse frozen until some time in the unspecified future, when people will be able to cure whatever caused your death. While a "slim" chance maybe be better than "no" chance, the odds that you will successfully be reanimated at some point in the future are pretty forbidding, even relative to things like winning the lottery or making an unsatisfactory lover change for the better. Since the time of ancient Egypt, mankind has been trying to preserve corpses in the hope of future reanimation. In case you hadn't noticed, this effort has been 100% unsuccessful to date. Cryonics per se (also known as cryogenics), the art of freezing a body to prevent decomposition, is a younger science but it's still been around long enough to demonstrate why it's a bad bet. Part of the problem with cryonics is that, much like time travel, there's really no big reason why it shouldn't work, it's just that we have no idea how it actually could work. Microbes, fish and a few other low-order cold-blooded life forms can in fact be frozen alive and thawed back to life. Depending on the specific critter, you can re-animate months, years or millennia later.

    CRYONICS: Debate rages
Thursday, July 25, 2002 By Mark Azzara
Chilly search for fountain of youth Ted Williams debate raises ethical questions The freezing of Ted Williams' body has spawned an avalanche of black humor. Headlines in the media and on the Web like "Cold Comfort" and "Human Popsicles," may elicit a chuckle but, to a lot of people, cryonics isn't funny. Phones were ringing off the hook from potential clients calling the Alcor Life Extension Foundation in Arizona, where Williams' body is stored, head down, in a 10-foot-high tank of liquid nitrogen at minus 325 degrees. If everything goes as planned, Williams' body and the few hundred others now frozen will be thawed when science has the ability to resuscitate a body, repair the damage from freezing and remove the cause of death. Bonnie Kaplan, cochairman of a Yale University think tank, said cryonics is just the latest chapter in the age-old quest for immortality that once spurred the search for elixirs or fountains of youth. But cryonics raises a flood of new ethical questions, none of which has been answered satisfactorily, she said. And it's not an arcane debate. "While this sounds like a boondoggle issue, the related issues, from organ donation to use of resources, are completely relevant," said medical ethicist Zita Lazzarini.

Charles Sheffield does a fine job here in this eons spanning tale, to me at least it mostly appears plausible. Here you will read of cryonic suspensions, control of matter at the atomic level, downloading of minds into other vessels of thought, a universe of post-humanity, and many other amazing things, it was page-turning material for me. The primary character is Drake Merlin, his wife died of an untreatable condition and he had her cryonically suspended, willing to do practically anything t...

Despite the submarine cover art and the rather awkward title, this is no by-the-numbers military thriller: rather, it's a full-blooded, multidimensional adventure story set in the frozen wilds of Alaska, both atop the ice and underneath it.
