To see the other covers for this book click here THE PROSPECT OF IMMORTALITY The following is from the dust jacket of the British hard cover edition, 1965. Would you like to live for ever, here on this earth? In the very near future this may become a real possibility. Indeed, in theory it is possible now, for if one was to be deep-frozen and stored away it is inevitable that in fifty, or a hundred, or a thousand years (time becomes meaningless in this context) surgery will have progressed to the point where damage to the cells which is at present irreparable will be able to be repaired. The difficulty at the moment is that present methods of freezing and unfreezing are so crude that a great deal more damage is done in the process. But this again is something which will soon be overcome. Should it happen, and there is the possibility that the first cases are already on ice, there will clearly be innumerable complications over the religious, social, and legal status of 'corpses', not to mention the purely physical problem of storage, and the enormous economic problem of over-population which must one day result. Can a 'corpse' inherit? Can an 'ice-widow' remarry? Is it euthanasia to freeze a relation, or is it murder not to?

Cryonics FAQ
I
Q: Wat is cryonics?
A: Voor zover bekend ongeveer 70 personen.
IV Q: Hoeveel mensen hebben er al een regeling voor invriezen getroffen?

    90. Cryonics And Cryogenics
cryonics and Cryogenics freezing - science of that which is cold - bringing frozen people back to life in the distant future. cryonics. Suspended Animation.
    http://www.zyra.org.uk/cryo.htm
Zyra's front page SCIENCE Contact site index Cryonics Suspended Animation Cryonics is freezing people so they may be brought back to life in the future. The future is hoped to be an amazing utopian futuristic existence where the sorts of things people died of these days (2004) can easily be cured. And, of course, the technology is assumed to be good enough to bring back to life people who have been frozen solid in liquid nitrogen for centuries! The idea is in principle not new, and has some similarities in principle to the Ancient Egyptian idea of storing a body by mummification in the hopes that the person will go on to an afterlife. Sceptics say it's all a bit silly on the basis that it's impossible to restore someone who is dead. It had better be mentioned here that although CRYONICS is optimistic immortalism, CRYOGENICS is a serious science to do with anything very cold, and there are some scientists in the serious business of supercool superconducting magnets who, if you ask them about deep-frozen dead people will look at you in the same sort of way as Patrick Moore would if you asked him to tell you your fortune by "the stars"! My personal opinion (this review is by Zyra , by the way), is that cryonics IS possible, and that if you freeze a dead person properly and keep the body long enough then you will be able to have them brought back to life, although it may be in the DISTANT future! The basis for this belief is:

    91. Cryonics Problems
The sacred rights of people to do as they will with their body after death surely are being infringed by government in the notorious cryonics thawing problem
    http://www.zyra.org.uk/cryoniq.htm
Zyra's front page Cryonics Human Rights Libertarian Matters ... site index Cryonics problems Oppressive government laws compelling you to dispose of your body in the way they tell you Cryonics is an alternative approach to funeral arrangements in that the body is frozen indefinitely in the hopes that some time in the future it will be possible for the person to be brought back to life. It's unorthodox, but that's no reason why it should be banned. If you want to be frozen and you can afford it, why shouldn't you? But one of the major problems with CRYONICS in the early zero-zeros decade is that some governments have a peculiar religious conformist attitude to the rites of the dead, and these governments / bureaucrats / authorities, try to impose their will on people, perhaps in a style of draconian regimes of a bygone age where the State and Church claimed domination over the rights of the people as it was a "divine right". The assumption with this type of religious baggage is that in various religious-sensitive fields such as death, the State has some kind of aristocratic precedence over you, the individual. The State's own stuffy religious beliefs being more important than any that you yourself might happen to have. You'd have thought that France, a country which surely believes in "La Libertie" and has had a somewhat revolutionary approach to solving problems of artistocracy claiming precedence over the people, would not have fallen into the trap of making up laws that are religion-specific and force people to conform to a state-religion practices, especially in such obvious aspects as the rites of what is done with the body after death. That should be a matter of personal taste and belief.

Review of Doug Platt's Talk on Cryonics
On May 16, Doug Platt came to talk with PhACT about Cryonics - which is the study and practice of freezing people for ( hopefully) revival at some time when technology can not only fix the ailment which did (or would have) killed them, but also (and this is the big step) undo all the serious damage reeked by freezing. Normally, crystallization which occurs with freezing destroys cells as would any chemical measures to avoid crystallization. Doug has been into this subject 20 years, has 2 frozen dogs, will himself be preserved and has participated in the "preservation" of others. Doug's futuristic stance in life was well underscored by the elaborate micro computer screen which he wore on his head while speaking (a few of us computer people in the audience started wondering if we should get one). Doug ingratiated himself by declaring himself a skeptic and mentioned having subscribed to Skeptical Inquirer 15 years ago. As with any controversial practice, there are plenty of myths associated with cryonics: like Walt Disney having been frozen - he was considering it but never did. Or someone pulling the plug and bodies thawing out - Doug says they are suspended head down in liquid nitrogen - there's plenty of thermal mass and if the level of nitrogen, got too low, only the feet would thaw. Doug addressed the question of massive damage with a small ray of hope that maybe the fledgling science of nanotechnology (with micro miniature machines) may be able to repair the damage. (This reviewing engineer feels that warming a body enough for micro robots to work would also allow further decomposition.)
