Abstract
The death at issue in the brain death debate is not an empiric reality, but a social category, "social death." It is a question of which bodies we are comfortable using and disposing of in certain ways, and not comfortable giving medicine or food as if they were "alive." Until recently both mind and body stopped functioning at the same time, and this "death" and "social death" were generally seen as one phenomenon. There were important exceptions, however, in many cultures where particular diseases and disabilities earned a social death definition before the physical death had occurred.
Introduction
For everyday purposes we know and can say whether an animal is alive or not. But upon closer inquiry, we find that this is, in many cases, a very complex question, as the jurists know very well. They have cudgeled their brains in vain to discover a rational limit beyond which the killing of the child in its mother's womb is murder. It is just as impossible to determine absolutely the moment of death, for physiology proves that death is an not instantaneous, momentary phenomenon, but a very protracted process. (Engels,1880

Welcome To Cryonics.
We hope this will give you an insight into cryonics. The information below is based on the basics of Cryonics. The procedures mentioned may differ between Cryonics providers. As this sight attempts to take a non biased stance, it is suggested you visit the web pages of the various providers for more information.
In 1964 a physicist Robert C. W. Ettinger wrote a book which would change the way we look at death forever. He called it The Prospect Of Immortality.
It is a very simple concept which utilizes a well proven idea that low temperature preservation (cryopreservation) might be a way for the dying patients of today to gain access to developments in medicine in the future - 'an ambulance to the future'.
We know that embryos and small organs can be cooled to the temperature of liquid nitrogen (-196 degrees centigrade) and we know DNA survives well because of the so-called 'test tube babies'.
Cryonics is the name given to the process of maintaining patients at low temperature for future revival. It is thought to be controversial because freezing an entire body is not yet reversible. Although many individual cells remain viable and able to resume function after freezing and thawing, the ice crystals that form between cells can cause extensive tissue damage. We can reduce this damage as far as possible with cryoprotectants (a form of human antifreeze) .
Once frozen, we should be able to maintain a human body for centuries if necessary, with very little change. This allows time for the development of new medical technologies, to reverse ageing and unlike today's medicine, the potential to repair any cellular damage.

We have to recognise, however, that the future of healthy life extension (regenerative medicine, stem cell therapies, understanding the biochemical processes of aging, and nanomedicine, to name a few fields) will not arrive soon enough to benefit everyone. Many people are too old, or suffer from other conditions that will kill them before cures can be developed. This is an unpleasant reality that we must face. Do we just write these people off and forge ahead regardless? Of course not. Instead, we turn to the science and business of cryonics, a serious effort to solve this problem that has been underway since the early 1970s.

The sixth Australian to be cryopreserved was apparently frozen earlier this month. As the main subject of the article says: "Death seems like a big nothing and I want to see what humans get up to over the coming centuries. That would be fascinating." Those of us who see cryonics as a backup plan are placing at least some of our near-term hopes for healthy life extension in medical advances relating to regenerative medicine.

73. A Basic Introduction To Cryonics
The Cryonic's Institute's Introduction to cryonics. 11 printed pages.
http://www.cryonics.org/prod.html
CRYONICS: A Basic Introduction Q: What is 'cryonics'? A: Cryonics is a technique designed with the intent to save lives and overcome illness and suffering. It involves cooling patients to the point where physical decay essentially stops, in the hope that future technologically advanced scientific procedures will be able to revive them and restore them to good health later on. A patient held in such a state is said to be in 'cryonic suspension'. Q: Can cryonics be performed on living people? A: Legally, not yet. Obviously, it would be better to cool a patient before illness causes so much physical damage that it results in death. But it's not presently allowed by law, even for someone in great suffering or with a terminal illness. We hope that one day it will be, under carefully controlled conditions, once revival from cryonic suspension can be demonstrated. Q: How do you know revival is even possible? A: Our web site contains articles and links to an immense amount of scientific evidence that we believe supports that conclusion. Indeed there are so many studies, often written of such a technical nature, that a quick summary is impossible: you need to study it and you should, since doing so could help you make a decision that could save your life, and the lives of others. But, in essence: we believe that revival is a real possibility because:

By associating individual names, faces and messages with the cryonics industry, we are better able to communicate with legislators. It is far easier for politicians to pass bad laws when they are not being engaged on a person-to-person basis. The Facing Cryonics initiative is a great way for you to show solidarity with cryonics supporters and advocates in the healthy life extension community. This sort of program will also serve well for other causes as it is expanded, such as the political battle over regenerative medicine and vital stem cell research.

http://www.crystalinks.com/cryonics.html
CRYONICS
Cryonics is the ultra-low-temperature preservation of anyone, as soon as possible after legal death. The goal of cryonics is to transport the hoplessly ill of today to a time in the future when cell and tissue repair technology will be available, and restoration to full function and health will be possible. Cures should exist for virtually all of today's diseases and debilities, including aging and extended periods of "clinical death". As human knowledge and medical technology continue to expand in scope, people considered beyond hope of restoration (by today's standards) will be returned to health. (This historical trend is very clear.) The coming control over living systems should allow fabrication of new organisms and sub-cell sized devices for repair and revival of patients waiting in cryonic suspension. The challenge for cryonicists today is to devise suspension techniques that will ensure the patients' survival.

77. The Cryonics Thesis
The why of cryonics, as understood by the cryonics Institute.
http://www.cryonics.org/reprise.html
What Is Cryonics?
Y ou think you know what cryonics is. But you probably don't. We aren't just saying that. In a recent survey, most people who described themselves as "better informed than average about cryonics," said they thought an average cryonics suspension cost around $300,000 dollars. They were wrong. In fact, through insurance funding, an average middle-aged man in average middle-aged health may be able to arrange a suspension with CI at a cost lower than his monthly cable bill. But their mistake was understandable. After all, most people first hear about cryonics on Star Trek or in a science fiction novel. And the general idea they get there isn't always totally wrong: a cryonics patient is cooled down to the point where all physical life functions, and all physical decay, essentially stop. Then, at some point in the future, when science has developed enough to bring them back in good health, the person is restored to good health. That's pretty much correct. There's only one problem with the way cryonics is presented in science fiction.

Because of the nature of interviews (and the limited space of only 800 words I get in Scientific American), much of what I wrote and said got boiled down to my analogy of defrosting frozen strawberries: "this is your brain on cryonics." Naturally the cryonics folks were none too pleased with my flippant remarks (sometimes I generate such responses by following H.L. Mencken's quip that a good horselaugh is worth ten thousand syllogisms). I received a number of rather hostile letters, but I did get a very thoughtful e-mail from my friend and colleague (and Skeptic board member) Steve Harris, who is both a good skeptic and a supporter of (and signed up for) cryonics (based on a purely probability argument), so I thought it might be constructive to present my original Scientific column below (this is my original version that is slightly longer than the original published piece that includes my acknowledgment of their new technique of vitrification), plus Steve's letter, which I think is very well reasoned and properly nuanced.
