The Malacostraca, a very large class of Crustacea, is being dealt with in four volumes in the Zoological Catalogue of Australia series. This volume covers the commercially important shrimps, prawns, lobsters and yabbies, listing over 1200 species known from Australian waters (including Australian Territorial waters).
The volume opens with a general introduction to the Malacostraca, giving an historical overview of the work on this group. The Catalogue then summarises the baseline data on nomenclature and taxonomy of all Phyllocarida, Hoplocarida and Eucarida (with the exception of crabs, hermit crabs and their allies). For each family there is a brief introduction and diagnosis, then Australian species are cited by name and original references are given.
This is a timely listing of all known taxa for this economically significant group: it assembles the baseline data; it highlights gaps and areas of confusion; and it identifies groups requiring attention. As such, it is an important text for fisheries workers and managers, environmental consultants and researchers specialising in crustacea.

  • 70. CRUSTACEA
crustacea, a very large division of the animal kingdom, comprising the familiarcrabs, lobsters, crayfish, shrimps and prawns, the sandhoppers and woodlice
    http://21.1911encyclopedia.org/C/CR/CRUSTACEA.htm
    CRUSTACEA
CRUSTACEA , a very large division of the animal kingdom, comprising the familiar crabs, lobsters, crayfish, shrimps and prawns, the sandhoppers and woodlice, the strangely modified barnacles anti the minute water-fleas. Besides these the group also includes a multitude of related forms which, from their aquatic habits and generally inconspicuous size, and from the fact that they are commonly neither edible nor noxious, are little known except to naturalists and are undistinguished by any popular names. Collectively, they are ranked as one of the classes forming the sub-phylum ARTHROP0DA, and their distinguishing characters are discussed under that heading. It will be sufficient here to define them as Arthropoda for the most part of aquatic habits, having typically two pairs of antenniform appendages in front of the mouth and at least three pairs of post-oral limbs acting as jaws. As a matter of fact, however, the range of structural variation within the group is so wide, and the modifications due to parasitism and other causes are so profound, that it is almost impossible to frame a definition which shall be applicable to all the members of the class. In certain parasites, for instance, the adults have lost every trace not only of Crustacean but even of Arthropodous structure, and the only clue to their zoological position is that afforded by the study of their development. In point of size also the Crustacea vary within very wide limits., Certain waterfleas (Cladocera) fall short of one-hundredth of an inch in total length; the giant Japanese crab (Macrocheira) can span over 10 ft. between its outstretched claws.

Phylogeny, historical biogeography and historical ecology of Caridean shrimps. Through phylogenetic analysis of selected groups of shrimps in combination with the study of their biogeographical distribution patterns and host-relations, hypothesis on the evolutionary history of these groups are formulated. Special attention is given to Pontoniine shrimps. These shrimps are usually living in association with other invertebrates. The co-evolutionary component is studied by means of comparisons between phylogenetic patterns of both shrimps and hosts. Current projects
    • Phylogeny of host-related colourvarieties of Hamopontonia corallicola Bruce, 1970, based on mitochondrial DNA. Phylogeny of host-related coloulvarieties within the Pontoniine genus Vir Holthuis, 1952, based on both morphological and molecular data. Phylogeny, historical biogeography, and historical ecology of Pontoniine shrimps associated with ascidians and molluscs based on mitochondrial DNA.
