"Crop Circles and Aliens: What's The Evidence?" by Carl Sagan . Parade Magazine (The Baltimore Sun); Sunday, December 3, 1995. pp. 10-12, 17. The phrase "flying saucer" was coined when I was in high school. The newspapers were full of stories about ships from beyond, in the skies of Earth. It seemed pretty believable to me. Many people seemed to see flying saucers: sober pillars of the community, police officers, commercial airplane pilots, military personnel. Andapart from a few harumphs and gigglesI couldn't find any counter-arguments. How could all these eyewitnesses be mistaken? What's more, the saucers had been picked up on radar, and pictures had been taken of them. You could see the photos in newspapers and glossy magazines. There were even reports about crashed flying saucers and little alien bodies with perfect teeth stiffly languishing in Air Force freezers. In college, in the early 1950s, I began to learn a little about how science works the secrets of its great success: how rigorous the standards of evidence must be if we are really to know something is true; how many false starts and dead ends have plagued human thinking; how our biases can color our interpretation of the evidence; how belief systems widely held and supported by the political, religious and academic hierarchies often turn out to be not just slightly in error but grotesquely wrong. Everything hinges on the matter of evidence. On so important a question as UFOs, the evidence must be airtight. The more we want it to be true, the more careful we have to be. No witness's say-so is good enough. People make mistakes. People play practical jokes. People stretch the truth for money, attention or fame. People occasionally misunderstand what they're seeing. People sometimes even see things that aren't there.

US billionaire funds crop circle research

Some crop circles can be very elaborate
US billionaire Laurance Rockefeller is to fund the UK's biggest survey of crop circles. The BBC's Jane O'Brien: There are unexplained factors such as the lack of footprints Scientists will be carrying out aerial research over Wiltshire next month in the hope of finding out once and for all whether the mysterious patterns are genuine or the work of hoaxers. Some believe they are created by UFOs during nocturnal visits. Others say they are connected to ancient "ley lines", or put it down to natural phenomena such as unusual forms of lightning. The first few crop circles of the season have already appeared in several West Country fields. The area has long been the focal point of those in Britain who believe that the circles are the work of extra terrestrial forces. Last year a US Website advertised week-long tours of UK crop circles priced at $2,199 per person. Until now research has been carried out by amateurs and enthusiasts, known as croppies. But there is a growing scientific discipline based around the study, known as cereology.

Crop circles: There is nothing to explain
By BBC News Online science editor Dr David Whitehouse Most people have heard of crop circles, those fascinating and often beautiful, symmetrical patterns cut into the crops mostly in southern England. They first came to media attention eight years ago when the strange circles started appearing in Wiltshire. At first, they were just circles. Then rings and circles within circles appeared - fairly simple shapes that could possibly have a natural explanation. Such as the vortex idea. Perhaps, some speculated, a mini-tornado could strike the ground swirling the crops into the symmetrical patterns. But then the crop circle phenomena changed. The circles became ever more complex and were clearly not a natural phenomenon. We saw circles that were very intricately designed according to advanced mathematical theory. On more than one occasion, a crop circle was later added to and filled in with extra circles and shapes. To some, this was all very curious. Obviously, they said, these circles were being made by aliens, or perhaps visitors from some other dimension, or perhaps they were sites of cosmic energy breaking through into our continuum. Perhaps, they speculated, it was our own planet trying to tell us something about our stewardship of the environment.

CIRCLES!
What are crop circles? Who or what makes them? How are they made? Why are they made? When are they made? Why have most of them been found within a 40 mile radius of Stonehenge? What happens to the fields of grain which are bent from them? Is there any danger from the circles to humans? What do the crop circles mean? What messages are they to us? Is there any way to decode to arrive at the meanings of them? What messages are they telling us? These and many, many other questions abound when one sees crop circles in the real or in pictures or reads about them. This is only an introduction to crop circles. These circles and diagrams appear as if by magic in fields of grain. Most are in England near Stonehenge but almost every country has had its share. They are intricate and precise "drawings" in the fields of grain. The grain themselves are bent over but not broken in the least, and each grain stalk continues to grow as if it were still straight up! As a matter of fact, analysis reveals these particular grains grow even better and more robust then their counterparts which have not been bent over. The crop in which they arrive is always harvested, and although they "disappear" physically, their electromagnetic energy signature remains in the field. This energy remains about 2 years. It is of importance to note that weather abnormalities such as wind whorls, hurricanes, etc. cannot form these in the precise manner and location in which they appear, even though respected individuals may believe so; one major circle near Stonehenge is precisely aligned with Stonehenge on both ends of the symbol or design so as to preclude being accomplished by humans and weather itself.

The "plasma event" (usually "plasma vortex") theory invokes an electromagnetic event which creates a rapid heating effect, causing patterns to be imprinted in grains, snow, sand and other media. The "mechanical flattening" hypothesis assumes that human artists create all formations using rollers, boards, rope and an array of other technologies. To skip to a summary of the overall ability of each hypothesis to explain the available observational evidence, click HERE Observational Evidence Plasma Event Hypothesis Mechanical Flattening Hypothesis 1) Crop circle and "ball of light" (BOL) reports date back as far as 1678, with about one hundred prior to 1980. Consistent with plasma phenomenon experiencing recent increase in intensity. Assumes hoaxers have existed for hundreds of years. Ignores all BOL reports.

By Daniel Pinchbeck THEY SHOW UP EVERY SUMMER: The spectacle has inspired a fresh crop of media attention. Signs, by Sixth Sense director M. Night Shyamalan, debuts August 2 starring Mel Gibson as a Pennsylvania farmer who discovers supernatural communications in his cornfields. Also coming in August is Crop Circles: Quest for Truth, Glickman's "hard information" refers to a moment at the end of last summer's growing season when crop circles turned away from the abstract. On August 14, an enigmatic human face, expertly executed in halftones, turned up next to a huge radio transmitter in Chilbolton, England. A few days later, a glyph appeared that many croppies believe to be an alien response to a SETI radio transmission sent into space almost 30 years ago. Formed out of expertly twisted wheat, the pattern shows a strand of DNA made with silicon instead of phosphorous, a transmission device of unknown design, an alternate solar system, and an extraterrestrial with a wide head. Encyclopedia Galactica on our doorstep?" He also notes that SETI's original signal was aimed at the star cluster M13, which means it will not reach its target for 24,972 more years. The institute, he says, "has no interest in investigating the phenomenon further."

Crop circles are symbolic patterns which have been forming around the globe in crop laden fields for as long as present day history can recall. One thing which is immediately clear to anyone (barring professional sceptics!) who steps into any real crop circle for the first time is that they are not man-made. We can't even draw these patterns properly on a piece of paper in a matter of minutes let alone stamp them on a huge area on a wheat field with hairbreadth precision.
Formed in 2002 near Windmill Hill, Wiltshire Click on Images for Full Size Image
The Hard Facts - 1. The crop circles are formed within a few minutes, a fact substantiated by numerous eyewitness accounts and film footages. A genuine film footage okayed by experts showing a crop circle being formed by two interacting luminescent light balls can now be seen on any of the major crop circle documentaries. In the footage, the circle took precisely 3 seconds to form. 2. None of the stalks are ever broken. They are all gently folded down in a perfectly ordered circular pattern.

Who-or what-is responsible for the thousands of complex patterns found in cereal crops all over the world? Are they all made by hoaxers? Are they made by aliens or Government satellites? Are they screams from a dying planet? Are they manifestations of human consciousness? Is there an esoteric code hidden in their patterns that comprises a message for mankind? Are we in danger, and are crop circles some kind of warning signal? Or are they all created by natural earthly causes-magnetic fields, underground water, plasma vortices...rutting hedgehogs? Colin Andrews, author of the bestseller, Circular Evidence , the first book about the crop circle phenomenon, brings the world up to date with his many years of research into this fascinating subject. The world's foremost authority on crop circles takes you on a mysterious and informative ride into the world of the crop circle phenomenon, providing an overview and setting the record straight about the nature of crop circles, their origin, and their meaning. Photo; Busty Taylor The Centre for Crop Circle Studies has been investigating crop circles since its inception in 1990 - these have mostly occurred in cereals - barley and wheat - and oil seed rape during the summer months. The crop circle phenomenon has been the subject of much publicity and controversy during that time resulting in some polarisation of views, particularly amongst the less well informed. Some journalists have rashly dismissed the phenomenon as just a hoax, perpetrated by persons known or unknown, or determined at all costs to persuade the public that they should not take the subject seriously, whilst others are equally determined that the unexplained nature of crop circles still makes this perhaps the greatest unresolved mystery of our time.
The CCCS believes in letting the evidence speak for itself, as well as encouraging those with different opinions and views to discuss the phenomenon. We encourage all lines of enquiry, from basic field research recording of formations dimensions, scientific research into aspects of the phenomenon such as soil analysis, to speculation on meaning and metaphysics. Indeed, some of the more esoteric aspects of our studies are now considered facts of mainstream science. The Centre for Crop Circle Studies affirms its belief in the existence of unexplained phenomenon and through its continued policy of seeking hard, and conclusive scientifically valid data, yearly progress is being made giving hope of an eventual solution to some of the aspects of this strange subject.

He first came to England to investigate the phenomenon for himself in 1992. Video cassettes are on sale for every year since then, and stock footage is available. He also loves the ancient stone circles and sacred sites in the area, and these usually appear on his tapes, too. Peter enhances frames from his digital video for display on his website. Using Photoshop software he does one or more of the following: Adjust color and contrast; alter perspective; hide walk lines and tractor lines. He respects the geometry of the circles, but on the RARE occasion when he alters the design, he will put a notation on the image. Throughout the summer he emails his pictures sometimes several in a day (many more than are posted on the website), and often on the very same day as new formations appear. [To be on the list costs 20 or $30 US all funds go to flying and research.
