Education Focus
Joachim Buhmann: course "Machine Learning" (interview in German).
Research Focus
Robert Stärk: A Logic for Secure Memory Access of Abstract State Machines
How can we formally prove that all memory accesses of a program are permitted? How can we show that high-performance C code like a network filter is memory safe? How can we use formal methods to prove that applets on a smart card are isolated and do not read critical locations of each other? How can we safely eliminate array bound checks and null pointer checks in Java programs?

(Micah Adler, Mark Corner, Jim Kurose, Brian Levine, Eliot Moss, Prashant Shenoy, Ramesh Sitaraman, Don Towsley) Networking and distributed systems provide the infrastructure for computation, communication and storage involving a heterogeneous and potentially large number of people, hardware devices, and software processes. Issues of concern include performance, security, scalability, functionality, and manageability. Our research aims at developing the protocols, system architecture, and underlying principles for these systems. Our approaches range from highly experimental systems research, to modeling and measurement, to theory. Our research areas include protocol design, network security, wireless and mobile communication, real-time and multimedia computation and communication, network algorithmics, performance modeling and analysis, network measurement, storage systems, autonomic computing, anonymity, and WWW protocols and infrastructure.
