"Dis be leaf?"
asked the caterpillar incredulously, taking a byte.
(Many, if not most, Great Truths require an initial, strong, voluntary suspension of disbelief.)
The Caterpillar and Alice looked at each other for some time in silence: at last the Caterpillar took the hookah out of its mouth, and addressed her in a languid, sleepy voice. "Who are you? " said the Caterpillar. (Stuff moved. Don't mind the chat as such, but how about continuing on the Emmett And Erin page? Mission
The Cognitive Science Branch conducts research and development in computer and information technologies. Important research areas involve the investigation of a variety of techniques, including linguistic, statistical, and knowledge-based methods, for improving access to biomedical information. Branch members actively participate in the Unified Medical Language System project and collaborate with other NLM research staff in NLM's Indexing Initiative, whose goal is to develop automated and semi-automated techniques for indexing the biomedical literature. The Branch also conducts research in digital libraries and is currently collaborating with NLM's History of Medicine Division on Profiles in Science, a project to digitize collections of prominent biomedical scientists. Several Branch projects address the challenges involved in providing health information to consumers.

    Introduction
Welcome to Calypso's Lecture Series for CS-100. The first (and only) lecture in the series is about the history of computing from the past to the present. This offers the student or casual browser an overview of the advances in science that made desktop computers possible starting with the invention of counting. This lecture was originally given in the fall of 1994 at the University of Regina (Regina, Canada) for 400 CS-100 students. CS-100 is an introductory course designed primarily for students from other disciplines. It was not intended for the computing science major student. As such, this material was geared to appeal to those students. Michelle A. Hoyle Future additions to the lecture include a section discussing the impact of business microcomputers and mainframes to the history of computing. Teachers , this lecture is available to be used on a standalone machine in a classroom. Drop me some mail if you would like a copy for use in a classroom, museum, or kiosk.

THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC Research and development efforts in alternative forms of assessment are on the rise in science education, along with growing interest in using computers in science assessment. A review of technological applications in science assessment was provided by Helgeson and Kumar (1993), recent developments in computer scorable, large scale tests were reported by Martinez and Bennett (1992), and a theme issue on computer-based science assessment was prepared by the Journal of Science Education and Technology (Vol. 4, Issue 1, 1995).
TYPES OF COMPUTER APPLICATIONS IN SCIENCE ASSESSMENT
Assessment applications for computers can be broadly classified into two categories: traditional and contemporary. In traditional applications the infrastructure is rigidly algorithmic. Examples include forced-choice and multiple-choice testing, grading, and record keeping. In more contemporary applications the infrastructure is quasi-algorithmic or non-linear in nature. Examples include constructed response testing, adaptive testing, figural response testing, simulations, and solution pathway analysis.
