No sooner had cold fusion surfaced than it was written off, and the idea of
extracting virtually limitless free energy from water became taboo. So how come
a small band of experienced researchers working for the US Navy just can't let
it drop?

Thermal and Nuclear Aspects of the Pd/D2O System, Vol 2 ...California is experiencing rolling blackouts due to power shortages.
Conventional engineering, planned ahead, could have prevented these
blackouts, but it has been politically expedient to ignore the inevitable.
We do not know if Cold Fusion will be the answer to future energy needs,
but we do know the existence of Cold Fusion phenomenon through repeated observations by scientists throughout the world.

It was the most notorious scientific experiment in recent memory - in 1989, the two men who claimed to have discovered the energy of the future were condemned as imposters and exiled by their peers. Can it possibly make sense to reopen the cold fusion investigation? A surprising number of researchers already have.
By Charles Platt
PLUS Cold Fusionaries Almost four stories high, framed in steel beams and tangled in pipes, conduits, cables, and coils, the Joint European Torus (JET) claims to be the largest fusion power experiment in the world. Located near Oxford, England, JET is a monument to big science, its donut-shaped containment vessel dwarfing maintenance workers who enter it in protective suits. Here in this gleaming nuclear cauldron, deuterium gas is energized with 7 million amperes and heated to 300 million degrees Celsius - more than 10 times hotter than the center of the sun. Under these extreme conditions atomic nuclei collide and fuse, liberating energy that could provide virtually limitless power. Maybe.

    Abstract
This report describes our attempt to independently replicate the Clean Energy Technologies, Inc (CETI) cold fusion experiment, which recently emerged as the most impressive claim of cold fusion energy production. Our replication effort is based on the CETI patents , and discussions with individuals who have experience with the device. So far we have been unable to reproduce CETI's claimed excess heat results. For example, in a setup in which CETI appears to obtain 4 Watts of heat output for a 0.06 Watt input, no excess heat production was observed, with a detection limit of 0.3 Watts. We identify a thermal bouyancy effect that can lead to apparent, but erroneous, excess heat production, but the effect is an order of magnitude too small too explain the CETI results. We also note various experimental difficulties that impede attempts to replicate their work. Our replication efforts will continue, hopefully with future cooperation from CETI. Contents Home
    Introduction
Cold Fusion is a speculative, unproven process which attempts to release nuclear energy as heat in a metal by loading it with hydrogen at room temperature. Most current research stems from the original Pons and Fleishmann (P-F) 1989 experiment, which has been difficult to replicate and has not been accepted as scientifically valid. Despite this lack of reproducibility, a significant

  • Cold fusion is the generation of anomalous excess heat at low temperatures. It began with experiments using an immersed palladium electrode activated in heavy water. In March, 1989, when the achievement of cold fusion was first reported in the press, electrochemically induced reactions were very difficult to reproduce. Despite the ensuing controversy, much work has persisted. More understanding has developed regarding what the products are (including helium ), and how the reactions work at increasing power levels. More importantly, the technology has blossomed to include anomalous heat of both steady-state and burst type in several types of materials.

POWER AND MATERIAL DEVELOPMENTS IN THE FIELD
  • Cold fusion technology has developed several material sciences which now include the use of titanium, nickel, and other metals in a variety of configurations. The reported excess heats are in the range of 2 to 400+% for the steady state excess enthalpies, and its occasional heat bursts demonstrate even greater amounts of potential useful energy.

I just answered a question for someone on the Macromedia forums Another poster did it this way: Now, obviously they both work but there's a big difference between them. The second version looks more elegant than mine. If you were looking at the two solutions, you'd go with the second because it just looks like it's better (and if it was for a job, hire the writer of the second).

Maybe other people can grade movies on a five-point scale, but not me. I'd be paralyzed by such questions as, "Which is better: Solar Force or TC 2000 ?" Instead, here's a simple rule of thumb:
This is hot fusion, aka "real" fusion. It gives out significantly more heat and light than went into it, just like it should. This stands for the roughly 5% of movies that are just plain excellent. This, on the other hand, is cold fusion: an inert beaker. If you think there's a glimmer of "fusion" in there, you're wrong. This represents the 5% of movies that are just plain unredeemable. All other movies fall somewhere between the two extremes. You figure out where. Given the subject matter around here, you're probably going to be seeing a lot more cold fusion than hot fusion.

For this to do what it does is impossible by any science I understand.
Mr. Spock, City on the Edge of Forever ``Cold fusion'' has come to mean the release of nuclear energy as heat in a metal loaded with hydrogen. Whether such phenomena exist remains controversial, scientifically unproven, and indeed seems quite unlikely by current atomic theory. Still, research continues and the verdict is not in yet.
