Cognitive Science
Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study of mind and intelligence, embracing philosophy, psychology, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, linguistics, and anthropology. Its intellectual origins are in the mid-1950s when researchers in several fields began to develop theories of mind based on complex representations and computational procedures. Its organizational origins are in the mid-1970s when the Cognitive Science Society was formed and the journal Cognitive Science began. Since then, more than sixty universities in North America and Europe have established cognitive science programs and many others have instituted courses in cognitive science.
1. History
Attempts to understand the mind and its operation go back at least to the Ancient Greeks, when philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle tried to explain the nature of human knowledge. The study of mind remained the province of philosophy until the nineteenth century, when experimental psychology developed. Wilhelm Wundt and his students initiated laboratory methods for studying mental operations more systematically. Within a few decades, however, experimental psychology became dominated by

7. Non-Cartesian Cognitive Science
Essays and many useful links on embodied and 'situated' approaches to cognition ranging from Artificial Life to Phenomenology, and much else.
http://www.magneticfields.org/sky/aarc/noncartesian.html
Non-Cartesian Cognitive Science
Traditional Cognitive Science is Cartesian in the sense that it takes as fundamental the distinction between the mental and the physical, the mind and the world, the subject and the object. It is this Cartesianism which leads to such claims as that cognition must be representational and that what sets cognizers apart is the fact that they exhibit "aboutness". It is the aim of this page to bring together non-Cartesian approaches to the study of cognition. That means that the main point which holds this page together is the idea that mind and body form a unity , not a union. Guttorm Floistad (1983) speaks of Spinozism to allude to non-Cartesian approaches to the mental. Under that heading, there is room for many different themes. Here's a short overview:
Conscious Experience and Phenomenology
Cartesianism, in its materialist guise, leads to the view that consciousness is an epiphenomenon, that qualia have no causal efficacy. Such a counterintuitive claim does not have to be held by the Spinozist, so she will be interested in the actual content of experiences.
Body
A direct implication of the claim that mind and body form a unity is that when there is talk of the mind, there must be talk of the body as well. Experiential content is rooted in bodily structure.

Welcome to the new Informatics Local website. The main Informatics site is the first port of call for departmental information, but this site provides direct access to material such as course information, research groups, technical support, etc. The new Informatics webserver was officially 'switched on' on April 29th 2004. It provides personal webpages for many of our Informatics staff and students, as well as hosting sites for our research groups and their projects. The webserver and this local site are obviously very new, so we hope you will forgive (and report!) any shortcomings or faults. Places to visit: Maintained by: Ann Fletcher (

W elcome to the Pre-History of Cognitive Science Web an annoted bibliography of models of human cognition from the Seventeenth through Nineteenth centuries. The bibliography is compiled and maintained by Carl Stahmer , at the University of California, Santa Barbara , as part of a larger dissertation project . The list of authors represented and forthcoming is the result of ongoing research into early models of cognition, with a particular emphasis on those thinkers who sought to understand the relationship between the material world, our physical bodies, and abstract thought. Philosophies of mind that do not contain some reflection on or disscusion of the materiality of thought are not represented. Suggestions for inclusion in the web can be made via email to cstahmer@rc.umd.edu and are greatly appreciated. All entries in the bibliograpy are hyperlinked to each other according to a list of key terms. The links to the right provide access to the bibliography via an alphabetical listing of authors. The bibliography can also be accessed using the chronological and subject indexes. A list of references is also provided.

    16. Contemporary Philosophy Of Mind: An Annotated Bibliography
Recent works in the philosophy of mind, philosophy of cognitive science, philosophy of artificial intelligence, and on consciousness in the sciences
    http://ling.ucsc.edu/~chalmers/biblio.html
Contemporary Philosophy of Mind: An Annotated Bibliography
Compiled by David Chalmers , Department of Philosophy, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721. E-mail: chalmers@arizona.edu . (c) 2001 David J. Chalmers. Last updated: July 15, 2001. This is a bibliography of recent work in the philosophy of mind, philosophy of cognitive science, philosophy of artificial intelligence, and on consciousness in the sciences. It consists of 5702 entries, and is divided into six parts, each of which is further divided by topic and subtopic. Many of the entries are annotated with a brief summary. (I don't necessarily take responsibility for these annotations, many of which I wrote in the distant past.) The bibliography consists mostly of papers and books from the last few decades, with density of coverage increasing with proximity to the present. Most of the core areas of contemporary philosophy of mind are covered, but some areas (e.g. (philosophy of perception, philosophy of action, propositional attitude semantics, moral psychology) receive less coverage than others. A fuller table of contents is below. Part 6 is relatively new and is not annotated. It's not strictly "philosophy of mind", but I've put it here for convenience. Of course the division between parts is inexact. There is plenty of material by philosophers in part 6, and plenty of material by scientists in the other parts (especially parts 1, 4, and 5).
