PlaceMenu("mainmenu") News! Arctic Climate System Study Mission The scientific goal of the WCRP's Arctic Climate System Study (ACSYS) project is to ascertain the role of the Arctic in global climate by attempting to find answers to the following related questions:
  • What are the global consequences of natural or human-induced change in the Arctic climate system? Is the Arctic climate system as sensitive to increased greenhouse gas concentrations as climate models suggest?
  • ACSYS ended in December 2003. The ACSYS Final Conference was held in November 2003. For more information about the ACSYS legacy, please visit the conference web (linked to this text). CliC International Project Office (CIPO) Last Modified : 21 November 2003

    Switch to green energy
Want to help stop climate change?
Changing your electricity supplier to one that sells electricity from renewable green energy sources - like wind and biomass - is a great start.
    Green electricity explained
By law, all electricity suppliers must prove they have bought or generated the equivalent of 0.03 unit (3%) of green electricity for every unit they sell. Green electricity tariffs offer you the chance to improve on this.
How can you tell it's green?
Every unit of green electricity generated comes with a certificate of proof that it is green. Companies use the proof to demonstrate to the Government they have met their legal obligation. Some companies keep the certificates for the extra green electricity they have supplied to you.

    The NOAA Aeronomy Laboratory
Advancing Our Understanding of the Earth's Atmosphere
    Who We Are
The Aeronomy Laboratory (AL) is one of the twelve Laboratories in the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The Laboratories of OAR are located in several states, from the East Coast to the West Coast. The research areas of the individual Laboratories focus on particular aspects of the Earth system and on different research approaches, with the common broad aim of improving the understanding and prediction of geophysical phenomena that relate to the well-being of humankind.
    Our Mission
The ultimate aim of the Aeronomy Lab's research is:
to improve the capability to observe, understand, predict,
and protect the quality of the atmosphere.

The Aeronomy Laboratory conducts fundamental research on the chemical and physical processes of the Earth's atmosphere. This research concentrates on the lower two layers of the atmosphere, known as the troposphere and stratosphere (see figure below). Both the stratosphere and the troposphere have important direct and indirect effects on the well-being of humankind. In this century, it has become increasingly clear that humans are influencing the chemical composition of the troposphere and stratosphere in ways that can impact conditions at the Earth's surface. Some of the most challenging environmental issues of our time have arisen. At the Aeronomy Lab, over 120 scientists, engineers, students, and supporting staff are engaged in studies of these issues, working with colleagues from other institutions across the United States and around the world.

The research unit Sustainability and Global Change is devoted to multi-disciplinary research and education on human-induced environmental change that is either global in nature or pervasive across the world. Our research aims to further the understanding of sustainable development and its constituents environmental quality, economic efficiency and social equity. We seek to cross-fertilise disciplines by building bridges between the natural and social sciences. staff offers courses in the economics of environmental resource management to both students of economics and students of other disciplines. Research and education are organised in a number of cooperative networks The Research unit is financially supported by the Michael Otto Foundation for Environmental Protection , the EU DG Research , the Hamburg Ministry for Science and Research , the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research , the Volkswagen Foundation , the Zeit Foundation and the Max Planck Society Semiannual Reports April 2003-October 2003 October 2002-March 2003

Welcome to Met Office research and development
The Met Office's research and development activities aim to improve the accuracy of our forecast services and the efficiency with which they can be produced. This enables our customers to benefit from the progressive international advancement of weather forecasting techniques. The main focus for delivery of improvements is through improving our Unified Model system. The Met Office is involved in many areas of research and development in the fields of atmospheric and oceanic sciences and observations.

    Numerical weather prediction
Numerical weather prediction is the process of obtaining an objective forecast of the future state of the atmosphere by running a computer model. As the computer model is improved then the accuracy of the weather forecasts that are issued increases. There are groups working on improving the numerical methods used, on data analysis and assimilation techniques, on how observations are best used and on the various uses of satellite data.
