Discover the Potential Changes Related to Global Warming Take an Expedition to the Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica
Join the One World Journeys team, including environmental photographer Gary Braasch, journalist Bill Dietrich, field technician Toby Malina and digital photographer Denise Rocco on a photo-documentary expedition to get a glimpse at Earth's response to global warming. During a 10-day webcast, follow the team deep into the beautiful Monteverde Cloud Forest of Costa Rica to discover what ecologists and scientists are learning about plants and animals and potential changes related to global warming. Mercury Rising: Bearing Witness to Climate Change opens our eyes to what many of us have have wondered about and observed: warmer winters, longer summers and stronger storms. Now learn what science and photographic records from around the world are saying about global warming. Our planet is getting hotter and nature is sending us a message. Take the journey now!

University of Plymouth, U.K. UPDATE 26th April CONFERENCE SCHEDULE NOW ONLINE, CLICK FOR DETAILS
The aim of this international conference is to pull together scientists working in marine and freshwater systems with an interest in the impact of climate change on the physico-chemical, biological and particularly ecological aspects of their systems. We aim to gather workers on historical climate change, those investigating the current impacts of climatic variation and persons modelling future climatic trends. The intent is to provide a shared experience, with sessions containing papers from all aquatic systems.

ICES Homepage FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT ICES SYMPOSIUM: "ACOUSTICS IN FISHERIES AND AQUATIC ECOLOGY" Montpellier, France 10-14 June 2002 As climate change, environmental factors, and fisheries depletion increase concern about marine life, the need for accurate assessments of fish and plankton becomes ever more urgent. Acoustical methods are the primary remote-sensing tool in the aquatic environment. The fifth ICES Symposium on acoustics of aquatic systems will explore recent advances and the expansion of acoustical methods into a broad range of environments. New analytical techniques, new technologies, and innovative acoustical implementations are changing the way we evaluate aquatic life. This ICES Symposium, the first on this topic to be held in the new millennium, will provide a unique opportunity for the international community to take stock of this rapidly evolving field. OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE Since the first symposium on fisheries acoustics, 30 years ago, these methods have been used extensively for observation and measurement in oceans, lakes, and rivers. Scales of study extend from a few centimetres to hundreds of kilometres, and from individual organisms to entire populations of fish and plankton. Recently the scope of acoustics has increased dramatically, and the methods and tools provide information to fisheries biologists as well as to ecologists, in most aquatic ecosystems : from the deepest oceans to extremely shallow waters, from unicellular organisms to the biggest marine mammals, for limnological and littoral environments, for pelagic, demersal and benthic populations, or even bottom type and

Arctic Ocean studies unify multi-national efforts in observational research
Click on figure for larger view. This September, researchers from Canada, Norway, Russia, and the United States will particpate in the Nansen and Amundsen Basins Observational Systems (NABOS) and Canadian Basins Observational Systems (CABOS) research cruises in the Arctic Ocean. Additionally, Japan and Germany are collaborating on the project. This effort contributes to the comprehensive study of the Arctic as part of the world climate system. The overall purpose of the observational program is to provide a quantitative, observationally based assessment of circulation, water mass transformation, and their mechanisms in the Arctic Ocean. IARC MISSION To serve as a focal point of excellence of international collaboration and provide the arctic research community with an unprecedented opportunity to share knowledge about science in the Arctic.

6 May 2004 QUIRIN SCHIERMEIER This article is from the news section of the journal Nature Sky high: cooling in the stratosphere influences temperature trends in the layer of atmosphere below. The discrepancy has been central to the arguments of sceptics about global warming. But according to a study in this issue of Nature it can be explained by interactions between the troposphere - the first 11 km of the atmosphere - and the stratosphere above it. The team, led by Qiang Fu, an atmospheric researcher at the University of Washington, subtracted the impact of such cooling from data on the stratosphere and performed a statistical analysis, which found temperature trends consistent with observed warming on the surface and the predictions of climate models. You cannot eliminate the stratospheric influence with statistical tools alone John Christy
Earth System Science Center But it does not impress John Christy, director of the Earth System Science Center at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, whose work established the inconsistency between temperature trends on the surface and in the troposphere

Terrorism: Industry and the Public Respond
Sunday, March 30, 2003, 2:30 - 5:30 PM
It's in the news and on everyone's mind - the possibility that terrorist attacks on petroleum, chemical and nuclear facilities could cause catastrophic damage and releases of hazardous materials. How vulnerable are these facilities and what can be done to protect them? How can we balance the public's right to know against the danger that terrorists will easily access such public information? Leaders from industry, government, public interest groups and others will discuss these and other issues in this very important forum. Toward a Sustainable Water Supply
Tuesday, April 1, 2003, 1:15 - 3:15 PM

Water was once treated as an inexhaustible resource. But few people hold that belief today in the face of droughts in the United States, Africa and elsewhere; conflicts between states and nations over river flows and water rights; and competing claims for water by communities, industry, fishing interests and hydro-electric power generators. A panel of four speakers representing the diverse perspectives of government, engineering, industry and society will present the facts and address the issues involved in the development of more effective water use technologies and practices.
Panelists include:

Draft case studies from the project exploring CDM and Chile's transportation sector are now available. Climate change is one of the most significant sustainable development challenges facing the international community. It has implications not only for the health and well-being of the Earth's ecosystems, but also for the economic enterprises and social livelihoods that we have built upon this base. Creative responses based on solid research, shared knowledge and the engagement of people at all levels are required to meet the challenge posed by climate change. IISD's Climate Change and Energy Team seeks to provide these responses by participating in activities that take it from the corridors of international climate change negotiations to communities in the high Arctic. As a global problem, climate change requires a global solution. IISD has been actively engaged in defining the framework for global action on climate change since the signing of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 1992. Throughout the process of negotiating the UNFCCC and its associated

Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research
The Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research, which is part of the Met Office, provides a focus in the United Kingdom for the scientific issues associated with climate change. The main aims of the Hadley Centre are:
  • To understand physical, chemical and biological processes within the climate system and develop state-of-the-art climate models which represent them; To use climate models to simulate global and regional climate variability and change over the last 100 years and to predict changes over the next 100 years; To monitor global and national climate variability and change; To attribute recent changes in climate to specific factors; To understand, with the aim of predicting, the natural interannual to decadal variability of climate.
It currently employs around 100 staff and uses two Cray T3E supercomputers. Most of its funding comes from contracts with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), other United Kingdom Government departments and the European commission.
