101. NOAA Paleoclimatology Program - Orbital Variations And Milankovitch Theory
NOAA Paleoclimatology Program educational material concerning the Milankovitch theory, which explains changes in the seasons as a result of changes in the earth's orbit around the sun.
http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov:80/paleo/milankovitch.html
Astronomical Theory of Climate Change What is The Milankovitch Theory? The Milankovitch or astronomical theory of climate change is an explanation for changes in the seasons which result from changes in the earth's orbit around the sun. The theory is named for Serbian astronomer Milutin Milankovitch, who calculated the slow changes in the earth's orbit by careful measurements of the position of the stars, and through equations using the gravitational pull of other planets and stars. He determined that the earth "wobbles" in its orbit. The earth's "tilt" is what causes seasons, and changes in the tilt of the earth change the strength of the seasons. The seasons can also be accentuated or modified by the eccentricity (degree of roundness) of the orbital path around the sun, and the precession effect, the position of the solstices in the annual orbit. What does The Milankovitch Theory say about future climate change?
Orbital changes occur over thousands of years, and the climate system may also take thousands of years to respond to orbital forcing. Theory suggests that the primary driver of ice ages is the total summer radiation received in northern latitude zones where major ice sheets have formed in the past, near 65 degrees north. Past ice ages correlate well to 65N summer insolation (Imbrie 1982). Astronomical calculations show that 65N summer insolation should increase gradually over the next 25,000 years, and that no 65N summer insolation declines sufficient to cause an ice age are expected in the next 100,000 years

102. Global Climate Coalition Is The Voice Of Business And Industry On Global Warming
Lobby group formed in 1989 to provide a voice for industry and in particular the oil industry - in the debate on climate change and global warming. Seeks to discredit human-induced climate change theories and argue against CO2 reduction.
http://www.globalclimate.org/
The Global Climate Coalition has been deactivated.  The industry voice on climate change has served its purpose by contributing to a new national approach to global warming.
The Bush administration will soon announce a climate policy that is expected to rely on the development of new technologies to reduce greenhouse emissions, a concept strongly supported by the GCC.
The coalition also opposed Senate ratification of the Kyoto Protocol that would assign such stringent targets for lowering greenhouse gas emissions that economic growth in the U. S. would be severely hampered and energy prices for consumers would skyrocket. The GCC also opposed the treaty because it does not require the largest developing countries to make cuts in their emissions.
At this point, both Congress and the Administration agree that the U.S. should not accept the mandatory cuts in emissions required by the protocol.  NEWS

The Earth is the Lord's and all that it holds, the world and all its inhabitants.
PSALMS 24:1
Why is the faith community concerned about global climate change?
It is a matter of justice.
  • Justice for poor people who will be most severely impacted by changing weather and rising seas and who have the least capacity to adapt. Justice for future generations who will inherit an unstable climate and potentially catastrophic rises in sea level, migration of tropical diseases, and disrupted agricultural production. Justice for all of creation that is threatened by climate change.
  • How can we fulfill our calling as stewards?
We are called to serve as stewards of creation. In this role, let's take action together - on public policy , in our congregations , in our homes and daily lives , by joining with others in our community , by joining the Interfaith Climate Change Network , and by inviting others to join our efforts.

Gordon Laird book recounts the littleknown story of Canada's other National Dream cheap power to fuel industrial growth. Features book introduction and photo essay on climate change.
    http://www.interlog.com/~grlaird/power.html
POWER is the untold story of Canada's modern age and the breaking issue of the new millenium. Award-winning journalist Gordon Laird recounts the little-known story of our other National Dream: cheap power to fuel industrial growth.
    Power
According to leaked cabinet documents, the Canadian federal government considers climate change to be Canada's biggest economic challenge since the Second World War. With energy responsible for as much as two-thirds of greenhouse gas increases in recent decades, Canada's plentiful energy resources oil, gas, hydro present an enormous challenge. A nation built upon a seemingly endless supply of cheap power now reckons with the unintended consequences of the industrial age: climactic instability, chronic air pollution, the growing cost of conventional power, as well as a lack of sustainable alternatives.
As new storms gather, smog fatalities increase and Canada expands fossil fuel production, a single question emerges. Power built Canada's first century, but will it undo the next?

ASHINGTON Allergy sufferers, beware: Global warming could bring more hay fever, according to government research that shows ragweed produces significantly more pollen as carbon dioxide increases. The ubiquitous weed makes nearly twice as much pollen now as it did 100 years ago and will likely double its production again over the coming century with predicted increases in carbon dioxide levels, the Agriculture Department study suggests. "This research may help us better understand the troubling impact of high carbon dioxide levels on our environment and our health," Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman said Tuesday. About 15 percent to 20 percent of the population has hay fever or allergic reactions to plant pollen, dust and other airborne particles and ragweed is the major cause of the problem in the fall. The plant is found all over the country and is particularly prevalent in the Northeast and Midwest. The pollen grains are so small that they can travel many miles.

Pentagon Report Describes Global Warming Dangers
    Last update: March 2004
An imminent scenario of catastrophic climate change is "plausible and would challenge United States national security in ways that should be considered immediately," according to a report commissioned by the Pentagon and obtained by media outlets in February 2004.
    Download the report
The report does not purport to be a forecast, but it identifies a plausible scenario in which global warming disrupts ocean currents that help moderate climate in North America and Europe, causing a five degree Fahrenheit drop in parts of North America by 2020 and a six degree drop in Northern Europe. It says global warming "should be elevated beyond a scientific debate to a U.S. national security concern." The Pentagon went public with its report in early February when it provided a copy of the report to Fortune magazine. Media coverage:
