Scientists blame fossil fuel emissions for global warming The Kyoto Treaty, considered crucial in the battle against global warming, has been dealt a severe blow by U.S. President George W. Bush's decision to abandon its principles. Q: What led to the Kyoto conference? A: The 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro expressed concern about the effects of climate change such as the movement of agricultural zones, the melting of polar ice caps and rising sea levels. Q: What were the aims of the Kyoto Protocol? A: Signed in December 1997, it called for a worldwide reduction of emissions of carbon-based gases by an average 5.2 percent below 1990 levels by 2012. Different countries adopted different targets: The EU committed to a cut of eight percent, the U.S. to seven percent and Japan to six percent. Russia and the Ukraine agreed to stabilise at 1990 levels. Q: What is in dispute?

Washington's New World Order Weapons Can Trigger Climate Change
Michel Chossudovsky 26nov00
Professor of Economics, University of Ottawa, author of The Globalization of Poverty, second edition, Common Courage Press, 2000. The important debate on global warming under UN auspices provides but a partial picture of climate change; in addition to the devastating impacts of greenhouse gas emissions on the ozone layer, the World's climate can now be modified as part of a new generation of sophisticated "non-lethal weapons." Both the Americans and the Russians have developed capabilities to manipulate the World's climate. In the US, the technology is being perfected under the High-frequency Active Aural Research Program (HAARP) as part of the ("Star Wars") Strategic Defence Initiative (SDI). Recent scientific evidence suggests that HAARP is fully operational and has the ability of potentially triggering floods, droughts, hurricanes and earthquakes. From a military standpoint, HAARP is a weapon of mass destruction. Potentially, it constitutes an instrument of conquest capable of selectively destabilising agricultural and ecological systems of entire regions. While there is no evidence that this deadly technology has been used, surely the United Nations should be addressing the issue of "environmental warfare" alongside the debate on the climatic impacts of greenhouse gases.

Climate change: Impacts and solutions
When Canada ratified the Kyoto Protocol last December, it opened the door to a cleaner future of innovative energy technologies. But to get there, Canada must now back its words with action. Solutions include phasing out coal plants, expanding renewable energy sources and public transit, and creating new efficiency standards for vehicles and buildings. Secretary-General of the OECD Published in the OECD Observer on: May 11, 2004 STI Working Paper 2003/15: Carbon Dioxide Emissions Embodied in International Trade of Goods 11-Feb-2004 This paper explores trade in goods by creating an indicator that estimates CO2 emissions related to domestic demand for 24 countries (responsible for 80% of global CO2 emissions) as a complement to the more common emission indicator used in the Kyoto Protocol. Greenhouse Gas Emissions Trading and Project-based Mechanisms 03-Feb-2004 This book presents a selection of papers from an international workshop co-sponsored by the OECD and Concerted Action on Tradeable Emissions Permits to discuss key research and policy issues relating to the design and implementation of efficient instruments for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate Change The American pika may be one of the first North American mammals to fall victim to global warming if heat-trapping emissions are not reduced soon.
photo: WWF / J. MacKenzie/www.picaworks.com The problem of climate change transcends national and community boundaries, and affects the whole environment. Using its global reach, WWF examines the effects of climate change and advocates solutions that will help protect beloved wildlife and wild places for future generations. If we fail to act now, many of the world's most important habitats and species will cease to exist. Although human-caused global warming is among the most pervasive threats to the web of life, its root cause can be addressed. The burning of fossil fuels - coal, oil and gas - releases carbon dioxide (CO ) into the atmosphere. This carbon pollution blankets the earth, trapping in heat, and causing global warming. Reducing these emissions is the first step in stopping global warming. Photovoltaic arrays and windmills help gather energy without heat-trapping emissions.

Absorption of radiation
The uptake of radiation by a solid body, liquid or gas. The absorbed energy may be transferred or re-emitted. See radiation
Acid deposition
A complex chemical and atmospheric process whereby recombined emissions of sulfur and nitrogen compounds are redeposited on earth in wet or dry form. See acid rain
Acid rain Rainwater that has an acidity content greater than the postulated natural pH of about 5.6. It is formed when sulfur dioxides and nitrogen oxides, as gases or fine particles in the atmosphere, combine with water vapor and precipitate as sulfuric acid or nitric acid in rain, snow, or fog. The dry forms are acidic gases or particulates. See acid deposition sulfur dioxide nitrogen oxides Acid Solution Any water solution that has more hydrogen ions (H+) than hydroxide ions (OH-); any water solution with a pH less than 7. See basic solution Acidic See acid solution Adiabatic Process A thermodynamic change of state of a system such that no heat or mass is transferred across the boundaries of the system. In an adiabatic process, expansion always results in cooling, and compression in warming.
