Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), 2001
This map illustrates the local consequences of global warming. FINGERPRINTS : Direct manifestations of a widespread and long-term trend toward warmer global temperatures
Heat waves and periods of unusually warm weather
Ocean warming, sea-level rise and coastal flooding
Glaciers melting
Arctic and Antarctic warming
HARBINGERS : Events that foreshadow the types of impacts likely to become more frequent and widespread with continued warming.
Spreading disease
Earlier spring arrival
Plant and animal range shifts and population changes
Coral reef bleaching
Downpours, heavy snowfalls, and flooding
Droughts and fires
The map of early warning signs clearly illustrates the global nature of climate changes. In its 2001 assessment, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded that, “an increasing body of observations gives a collective picture of a warming world and other changes in the climate system." Although factors other than climate may have intensified the severity of some of the events on the map, scientists predict such problems will increase if emissions of heat-trapping gases are not brought under control.

See also the main National Assessment web site To view these documents, you need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader The National Assessment of the Potential Consequences of Climate Variability and Change is a landmark in the major ongoing effort to understand what climate change means for the United States. The Assessment was called for by a 1990 law, and has been conducted under the US Global Change Research Program in response to a request from the President’s Science Advisor. This site contains the final approved version of the report of the National Assessment Synthesis Team, which was a federal advisory committee made up of experts drawn from government, universities, industry, and non-governmental organizations. The report is provided in two parts: (1) an Overview report , and (2) a Foundation report that provides additional detail and full references. These two national-level, peer-reviewed documents synthesize results from studies conducted by regional and sector teams, and from the broader scientific literature. More information on the National Assessment and how it was conducted is available from the

About the IIGCC
The Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC) is a forum for collaboration between pension funds and other institutional investors on issues related to climate change. IIGCC seeks to:
  • Promote better understanding of the implications of climate change amongst our members and other institutional investors.
Encourage companies and markets in which IIGCC members invest to address any material risks and opportunities to their businesses associated with climate change and a shift to a lower carbon economy.
A full list of members and details of our structure, steering committee and secretariat is provided in the membership section Quick Links 2003 conference page
Why the Group was formed
Climate change is arguably the biggest environmental risk management challenge facing many of the corporations in which we invest. It is already affecting government and fiscal policy and consumer behaviour. So as investors we need to understand the investment implications of this if we are to maintain professional standards of investment management. IIGCC recognises the growing scientific and political consensus that emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are contributing to climate change. IIGCC further recognises that companies and markets face significant risks and opportunities associated with climate change, either indirectly through changes in the regulatory environment or directly through changes in the physical environment.

The Climate Change Calculator is an interactive software tool designed to raise people's awareness of the greenhouse gases they produce through their daily activities and lifestyle choices. Why use the Calculator? The planet is getting hotter. This global warming is changing our climate and altering conditions for all life on Earth. Human activities are contributing to this warming. Burning fossil fuels - such as coal, oil and gas - releases carbon dioxide, the most significant greenhouse gas Making smart choices about your home energy use, modes of transportation and recreational activities can reduce your individual emissions . This, in turn, can address a number of related environmental problems , improve your quality of life and save you money In order to run the calculator you need:

Common Misconceptions about Abrupt Climate Change

Several decades of scientific research have yielded significant advances in understanding the ocean's role in regulating Earth's climate. This summary covers some of the major points about abrupt climate change that are often misunderstood.
Testimony to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation

Bill Curry describes changes in the ocean that have been detected in only the last two years and discusses possible ocean and climate changes that may occur in the future if the planet continues to warm. Rate of Ocean Circulation Directly Linked to Abrupt Climate Change in North Atlantic Region
A new study strengthens evidence that the oceans and climate are linked in an intricate dance, and that rapid climate change may be related to how vigorously ocean currents transport heat from low to high latitudes. Salt Levels Changing in the Oceans
Saltier tropical oceans and fresher ocean waters near the poles are further signs of global warming's impacts on the planet.
