(1) “New family forms: Parent-child relationships and the psychological development of the child”
Funded by Wellcome Trust Programme Grant.
Grant Holder: Professor Susan Golombok
Coordinator: Dr Clare Murray
Research Psychologists: Vasanti Jadva; Dr Emma Lycett, Fiona MacCallum The grant incorporates four studies of the consequences of new family forms for the quality of parent-child relationships and the psychological well-being of the child. Families created by surrogacy This investigation examines the outcomes of surrogacy for all of those concerned; the surrogate mother, the parents, and the child. The study focuses on the motivations, attitudes and emotional well-being of the adults, the quality of the relationship between the surrogate mother and the child’s parents, the quality of the relationship between the surrogate mother and the child (where such a relationship exists), the quality of the relationship between the parents and the child, and the socio-emotional development of the child. Donor insemination families The primary concern regarding children conceived by donor insemination is that the secrecy surrounding these procedures may have an adverse effect on their social, emotional and identity development. This study examines family relationships and the psychological well-being of children who have been told about their genetic origins, in comparison with families where the child has not been told, to determine the effects of openness versus secrecy.

From The Bench
Child Psychology and Nonsense
by G.K. Chesterton
This essay first appeared in the Illustrated London News on October 15, 1921 In this age of child-psychology nobody pays any attention to the actual psychology of the child. All that seems to matter is the psychology of the psychologist and the particular theory or train of thought that he is maintaining against another psychologist. Most of the art and literature now magnificently manufactured for children is not even honestly meant to please children. The artist would hardly condescend to make a baby laugh if nobody else laughed, or even listened. These things are not meant to please the child. At best they are meant to please the child-lover. At the worst they are experiments in scientific educational method. Beautiful, wise, and witty lyrics like those of Stevenson's "Child's Garden of Verses" will always remain as a pure lively fountain of pleasurefor grown up people. But the point of many of them is not only such that a child could not see it, it is such that a child ought not to be allowed to see it The child that is not clean and neat

Child Psychology and Nonsense
by G.K. Chesterton
This essay first appeared in the Illustrated London News on October 15, 1921 The child that is not clean and neat,
With lots of toys and things to eat,
He is a naughty child, I'm sure,
Or else his dear papa is poor. It would be easy to justify a vast number of the other nursery rhymes, in the same vein of a more serious art criticism. If I were asked to quote four lines which sufficed to illustrate what has been called the imaginative reason, when it rises almost to touch an unimaginative unreason (for that point of contact is poetry), I should be content to quote four lines that were in a picture book in my own nursery The man in the wilderness asked of me,
How many strawberries grow in the sea?
I answered him, as I thought good:
"As many red herrings as grow in the wood."

"In the News"
...
Montrose Wolf, 1935-2004

"No research without action,
no action without research." Kurt Lewin The Department of Human Development and Family Life's mission is to understand behavior and solve socially important problems through science. Its outstanding undergraduate and graduate students engage in programs of study that integrate courses on (a) basic behavioral processes, (b) typical and atypical individual, social, and cultural conditions under which these processes operate and problems arise, and (c) interventions that change those conditions to solve those problems, thereby advancing individual, social, and community development. Two faculty members receive a Kemper Award for Teaching Excellence Recent Student Research Awards "In the News" Critical thinking is required throughout the undergraduate and graduate programs, in particular, research skills in assessing and analyzing the bases of socially important problems, in systematically applying empirically-based interventions to solve them, and in evaluating the outcomes of those interventions. Along with these programs of study, the Department also requires significant practicum training, service learning, or research experience, both onsite and offsite. In addition, the Department works with related disciplines in the behavioral, social, and cognitive sciences to discover and disseminate new knowledge. It collaborates with community members, social organizations, and state agencies to develop and evaluate new applications. And, it communicates news of this knowledge and these applications through scholarly journals and texts, and state, federal, and international agencies and foundations in order to make a difference locally, nationally, and globally.
