Freudenrich, Ph.D. Table of Contents Introduction to How Oil Refining Works Crude Oil From Crude Oil The Refining Process Fractional Distillation Chemical Processing Treating and Blending the Fractions Lots More Information Shop or Compare Prices In movies and television shows Giant Oklahoma Crude Armageddon Beverly Hillbillies we have seen images of thick, black crude oil gushing out of the ground or a drilling platform. But when you pump the gasoline for your car, you've probably noticed that it is clear. And there are so many other products that come from oil, including crayons, plastics, heating oil, jet fuel, kerosene, synthetic fibers and tires. How is it possible to start with crude oil and end up with gasoline and all of these other products? Photo courtesy Phillips Petroleum Company In this edition of HowStuffWorks , we will examine the chemistry and technology involved in refining crude oil to produce all of these different things!

165. Chemical Of The Week -- The Chemistry Of Autumn Colors
THE chemistry OF AUTUMN COLORS. Every autumn across the Northern Hemisphere, diminishing daylight hours and falling temperatures
http://scifun.chem.wisc.edu/chemweek/fallcolr/fallcolr.html
THE CHEMISTRY OF AUTUMN COLORS Every autumn across the Northern Hemisphere, diminishing daylight hours and falling temperatures induce trees to prepare for winter. In these preparations, they shed billions of tons of leaves. In certain regions, such as our own, the shedding of leaves is preceded by a spectacular color show. Formerly green leaves turn to brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red. These color changes are the result of transformations in leaf pigments. The green pigment in leaves is chlorophyll. Chlorophyll absorbs red and blue light from the sunlight that falls on leaves. Therefore, the light reflected by the leaves is diminished in red and blue and appears green. The molecules of chlorophyll are large (C H MgN O ). They are not soluble in the aqueous solution that fills plant cells. Instead, they are attached to the membranes of disc-like structures, called chloroplasts, inside the cells. Chloroplasts are the site of photosynthesis, the process in which light energy is converted to chemical energy. In chloroplasts, the light absorbed by chlorophyll supplies the energy used by plants to transform carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and carbohydrates, which have a general formula of C x (H O) y x CO y H O light x O + C x (H O) y chlorophyll In this endothermic transformation, the energy of the light absorbed by chlorophyll is converted into chemical energy stored in carbohydrates (sugars and starches). This chemical energy drives the biochemical reactions that cause plants to grow, flower, and produce seed.

Welcome to the Molecule of the Month page! Each month a new molecule will be added to the list on this page. The links will take you to a page at one of the Web sites at a University Chemistry Department or commercial site in the UK, the US, or anywhere in the world, where useful (and hopefully entertaining!), information can be found about a particularly interesting molecule. If you wish to contribute a Molecule of the Month page, just email me the URL and I'll add you to the list at the next opportunity. (There's generally a 2-3 month waiting list, so this gives you plenty of time to write and polish your page).

177. College Physics For Students Of Biology And Chemistry
College Physics for Students of Biology and chemistry. This is a hypertextbook written for firstyear undergraduate physics students.
http://www.rwc.uc.edu/koehler/biophys/text.html
College Physics for Students of Biology and Chemistry
This is a hypertextbook written for first-year undergraduate physics students. It assumes that you have a working knowledge of algebra, that you are currently taking or have taken a college level course in Biology and one in Chemistry, and that you are interested in biology, chemistry or one of the health-related fields. It does not try to be encyclopedic, but neither does it assume that you have to be spoon-fed: you are expected to be a serious student and a careful reader. This means that you are expected to work out all of the examples for yourself, and do all of the problems. When first approaching a problem, use the corresponding text as a research tool: using the variables in the problem as a guide, identify the equations in the text (and any examples) which are relevant. The text is often quite "concise": there is very little in the text which is not relevant at some point to latter portions of the text or to the problems. After working through a few problems, read the text again and it will be much clearer: the only way to understand how the "laws" of physics work is to struggle through the problems which use them. You should not expect to understand how to work a problem simply by reading about it. As in all things, the learning is in the doing.

Reasons for this Web Site
I started this web site in 1995 to show off my students and their work in Physics and Biology class. The students have contributed greatly to this site, as well as instructors from as far away as Australia. We receive E-mail from all over asking about Roller Coasters, Egg Drops, Catapults and more. We have tried to post a sample of Class Projects from each years Physics Classes. In addition you will find a wide assortment of Common Molecules on display in the Classroom section, as well as a large collection of 3D Java Enhanced Molecules on the Biology Page. We have Pictures of Our Classes, Winners from competitions, a Jukebox with almost 100 Midi Files online, the first of a Lecture Series, Science Award Winners listed, and more online here.
