CHEMTUTOR
Basic chemistry help is available here for high school or college students. Chemtutor begins with the fundamentals and gives expert help with the most difficult phases of understanding your first course in chemistry. Chemtutor is not necessarily a complete text for your course or a complete outline, but we are proud to offer some insightful help in the parts of primary chemistry that have been, from our experience, the hardest for students to grasp. Chemtutor is a work in progress. We are over half finished with the primary chemistry program. Pretty is not our aim, but there is a lot of good information here. Chemtutor can be a course of study for independent students, a resource for chemistry teachers, a review, or a tutoring program for students taking high school or basic college chemistry. If you like what you see here, use it, tell your friends, and especially tell your chemistry instructor. If you can help us with constructive advice, email dwilner@MindSpring.com new model Heuristics - How to learn

Designing the Molecular World:
Chemistry at the Frontier
Philip Ball
Shopping Cart Reviews Table of Contents Some of the most exciting scientific developments in recent years have come not from theoretical physicists, astronomers, or molecular biologists but instead from the chemistry lab. Chemists have created superconducting ceramics for brain scanners, designed liquid crystal flat screens for televisions and watch displays, and made fabrics that change color while you wear them. They have fashioned metals from plastics, drugs from crude oil, and have pinpointed the chemical pollutants affecting our atmosphere and are now searching for remedies for the imperiled planet. Philip Ball, an editor for the prestigious magazine Nature, lets the lay reader into the world of modern chemistry. Here, for example, chemists find new uses for the improbable buckminsterfullerene molecules60-atom carbon soccerballs, dubbed "buckyballs"which seem to have applications for everything from lubrication to medicine to electronics. The book is not intended as an introduction to chemistry, but as an accessible survey of recent developments throughout many of the major fields allied with chemistry: from research in traditional areas such as crystallography and spectroscopy to entirely new fields of study such as molecular electronics, artificial enzymes, and "smart" polymer gels. Ball's grand tour along the leading edge of scientific discovery will appeal to all curious readers, with or without any scientific training, to chemistry students looking for future careers, and to practicing chemical researchers looking for information on other specialties within their discipline.

Global Instructional Chemistry
Welcome to a new concept in the distributed teaching of Chemistry. Over the coming years, these pages will be built up to include small "stories" or case histories illlustrating modern chemistry in action, liberally dosed with "hyperactive" molecules which you will be able to rotate, measure and generally play with. The content will include chemical problems suitable for tutorial and classes, a page where you can log-in to suitable on-line information databases, pages where you can acquire programs and other software, and any other good ideas that people come up with. We expect these pages will be used to augment and enhance local courses rather then to replace their teachers! We recommend How to chemically configure it

    http://www.tcd.ie/Advanced_Materials/
    Welcome
New Materials, from stone to steel to silicon, have always had a key role to play in the progress of civilization. Our lives today are being rapidly transformed by developments like optical communication which is based on the perfection of glass fibre. What distinguishes the modern investigation of materials is that it is firmly grounded in basic science. Complex instruments and sophisticated theories combine to provide fundamental insights into the microscopic properties of materials, which in turn makes it possible to design new materials for specific purposes and to generate new applications for these materials. "The Physics and Chemistry of Advanced Materials" is a joint course taught by the Chemistry and Physics Departments. To find out about the aims of the degree, the entry requirements and how to apply, go to New Degree . A full description of the course is provided in Course Material

Started 25 years ago by Scientist Emeritus Werner Deuser, the OFP uses moored sediment traps near Bermuda to continuously measure the carbon flux to the deep ocean. It is the longest record of its kind. The research programs of Assistant Scientists Katrina Edwards and Chris Reddy are part of a new departmental initiative in microbial biogeochemistry. Katrina is studying the role of microtopography in microbial attachment to mineral surfaces. This research has important implications for life in the deep ocean, how rapidly minerals weather, and biofouling in the marine environment. Chris is conducting research crucial to understand the long- and short-term effects of oil spills in the ocean. He is using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography to study the effects of microbial degradation on sedimentary petroleum hydrocarbons in both laboratory and field samples (see Project Highlights story on the
