In a World of Order, Chaos Reigns
A chaotic washing machine? That's right. In 1993, Goldstar Company created the first consumer product to exploit "chaos theory." This washing machine was supposed to produce cleaner and less-tangled clothes. Chaos theory attempts to explain the fact that complex and unpredictable results can and will occur in systems that are sensitive to their initial conditions. The history of chaos theory is explained along with other real-life examples. Earlier this year, a Russian geophysicist named Vladimir Keilis-Borok, who currently works at UCLA, shook up the scientific world by predicting that a major earthquake will hit southern California before Sept. 5, 2004. Ordinarily, such claims are dismissed out of hand by the scientific community, but Keilis-Borok's team successfully predicted two other major earthquakes in 2003. Then in March, the California Earthquake Prediction Evaluation Council (CEPEC) issued a report which states that, while not yet fully substantiated, the methodology behind the prediction is legitimate, and the results are provocative. CEPEC recommended that all existing earthquake preparedness plans be reviewed. Since the announcement of his "major breakthrough" in earthquake prediction, Keilis-Borok has received a lot of attention in the press, with all of the sensationalism and doomsaying that you might expect, but not much detail. His technique for making these predictions is usually described with a paragraph or two, as being based on identifying patterns of small tremors, with an occasional short reference to something called "chaos theory" . Now, one

    ABOUT
    The Order of O.D.D.
    The Sacred Order of O.D.D.

The Sacred Order of O.D.D. is a peaceful organisation, aimed at the preservation of the past, and resistance through knowledge. Our particular area of expertise relates to factual material from the Age of the Gods. Contrary to popular rumour, we can safely assure you that there is no Secret Order of O.D.D.
In the year 1723 someone rescued an expert scholar, Leitizia Alvarez de Toledo from the Chtolian hit-squads of what was still, pre-Age of Marketing and Spin, the Multiverse Empires. Leitizia was an expert on the Library of Babel, an early experiment in Black Iron Prison psychotechnology that eventually lead to the Babylon Class of BIPs. Thanks to De Toledo, some other people broke out Babel’s last Librarian, the homoplasmate Kadmon. Why they did these nice things for us we have no idea, but with the help of Kadmon’s Strange Mystic Powers, we have built our own infinite (or rather unlimited and cyclical) library, which we call Liber Mundi. Opening across the WWW at twenty-past the Singularity. That de Toledo has joined our Order is entirely coincidental and should in no way alarm the authorities.
We protect, decode, translate, and study this Library of the Order of O.D.D. In the past, documents relating to the actions of the gods were few and primarily mythical rather than factual. A subset of O.D.D. has always been more interested in this element of our struggle (by vested interest, being mostly out-of-work deities), but our chapter, dedicated to pure research came into being in a great founding ceremony in 1732, in the Library of Dubrovnic. The dinner was nice, and there were some rousing speeches, though that of our founding father, a famous Orang-utan, seemed to consist mostly of an hour of the same sound repeated with different intonations, punctuated by expressive scratching and hanging from things.

  • "Gleick's Chaos is not only enthralling and precise, but full of beautifully strange and strangely beautiful ideas."-Douglas Hofstadter "I was caught up and swept along by the flow of this astonishing chronicle of scientific thought. It has been a long, long time since I finished a book and immediately started reading it all over again for sheer pleasure.-Lewis Thomas From the Prologue: T he police in the small town of Los Alamos, New Mexico, worried briefly in 1974 about a man seen prowling in the dark, night after night, the red glow of his cigarette floating along the back streets. He would pace for hours, heading nowhere in the starlight that hammers down through the thin air of the mesas. The police were not the only ones to wonder. At the national laboratory some physicists had learned that their newest colleague was experimenting with twenty-six-hour days, which meant that his waking schedule would slowly roll in and out of phase with theirs. This bordered on strange, even for the Theoretical Division.

It is directed by Robert L. Devaney of the Department of Mathematics at Boston University. At this point, there are a number of Java applets available at this site for use in teaching ideas concerning chaos and fractals. There are also several interactive papers designed to help teachers and students understand the mathematics behind such topics as iterated function systems (the chaos game) and the Mandelbrot and Julia sets. 76. Chaos Theory And Education
chaos Theory and Education. Michael Lorenzen. It is called chaos theory and it ishighly relevant to the field of teaching. Education is an uncertain endeavor.
    http://www.libraryreference.org/chaos.html
Chaos Theory and Education Michael Lorenzen The universe is a chaotic place. It is full of uncertainty and it can be difficult to predict exactly what is going to happen at any given time be it the present or the far future. Scientists and mathematicians have developed a theory to explain this phenomenon. It is called chaos theory and it is highly relevant to the field of teaching. Education is an uncertain endeavor. Not only is it difficult to exactly predict what will happen in the class each day, it is nearly impossible to ascertain what the best course of education for any given person or class may be. The reasons for this are simple. Education is connected to the rest universe and as such is fully subject to the chaos that naturally exists in reality. Chaos has been contemplated by mankind for several millennia. The concept can be seen in early religious philosophy (Hinduism has believed in chaos from its inception) to the Babylonian epic of Gilgamesh. Isaac Newton also considered the nature of chaos in the universe. A modern view of chaos theory was written by Gollub and Solomon. They wrote (282), "A chaotic system is defined as one that shows sensitivity to initial conditions. That is, any uncertainty in the initial state of the given system, no matter how small, will lead to rapidly growing errors in any effort to predict the future behavior…In other words, the system is chaotic. Its behavior can be predicted only if the initial conditions are known to an infinite degree of accuracy, which is impossible."
