Japanese Ceramics
Prehistoric Ceramics
Japan has a rich tradition of designing, forming and firing some truly unique and artistically fulfilling ceramics. The earliest Japanese ceramics date back to the prehistoric Jomon (“cord marked”) period which extended roughly from 10,500 to 300 BC. The early Jomon pieces are usually large, cone shaped cooking pots. They have pointed bodies and the outer surface of the pots are usually stamped or rolled with rope or cord patterns. These early pieces were formed by the coil method in which successive coils of clay were placed on each other. This created a thick, slightly irregular and highly built-up appearance. Firing took place in open pits or ditches and since the heat rarely exceed 700 degrees, the pots are low-fired ceramics or earthenware that are generally largely water-soluble. Pots of the Middle Jomon period (2500 to 1500 BC) are distinquished for their decorations which include ovals, circles, spirals and other shapes that resemble human or animal faces. Pots of this period are highly unique and very ornamented. This period and the succeeding later Jomon period, which lasted until 300, BC saw the introduction of large numbers of small figurines, which are both animistic as well as artistic in their execution. The Jomon period was succeeded by the Yayoi Period (300 BC – 300 AD). The Yaoyi culture was probably brought to Japan by tribes that migrated from the Korean peninsula. The people developed the use of bronze and were highly developed at the production of ceramics. Yayoi ceramics may at first seem plain compared to Jomon ceramic forms but Yaoyi ceramics used finer alluvial clays to produce thinner-walled delicate shapes that can be very pleasing. Most Yaoyi vessels were unadorned but rendered in graceful shapes and balance of form with firing marks in natural colors of black and red.

The ceramics of the Khmer empire are believed to have started being produced in the 9th Century. The ceramcis are of extremely good quality and were produced in high volumes during the 11th and 12th centuries, especially around the kilns at Mout Kulen near Angkor. There were also many provincial kilns within the borders of present day Thailand. The main centers of production were at Baranae and Ban Kruat in Buriram province, and at Pimai in Northeastern Thailand. Unfortunately, because of the destruction of central government control and increasingly chaotic conditions, production of Khmer ceramics ceased by the end of 13th Century. A majority of Khmer ceramics are glazed brown or celadon high fired stonewares, covered with a natural feldspathic, wood-ash glaze with iron, dark jade-greens or deep olive-green colors, but can vary to nearly white, gray, honey yellow or brown. There are also dual-glazed, dual-colored and unglazed wares in Khmer ceramics. Khmer ceramics were made in a wide variety of shapes ranging from large storage jars, vases, covered urns to bowls, pots and covered boxes, animal shaped lime pots and oil lamps, figurines, conch shells and building material. It is likely that many of these pieces were used for the purposes of ritual. Generally Khmer ceramics are heavy, rather brooding, somber, and serious looking pieces but all have a beauty of shape and glaze that makes them extremely appreciated by those who have an eye for art and history.

The East Liverpool Museum of Ceramics houses an extensive collection of the wares produced by "America's Crockery City." Related displays on the social, political, and economic history of this town show the impact of the industry on the community. Ceramic manufacturing was more important in East Liverpool during the late-nineteenth century than is steel production in Pittsburgh or automobile manufacturing in Detroit today. Located in the former city post office, the museum is a graphic example of the adaptive use of old buildings. The exhibits in the museum depict the growth and development of East Liverpool and its ceramic industry from 1840 to 1930, the period when the city's potteries produced over 50% of the ceramics manufactured in the United States. Through the skillful use of photographs, artifacts and life-size dioramas, the exhibits vividly portray the products and life of one of Ohio's most unique cities.

Origin of ceramics
The word ceramic is derived from Greek, and strictly refers to clay in all its forms. However, modern usage of the term broadens the meaning to mean inorganic non-metallic materials. Up until the or so, the most important of these was the traditional clays, made into pottery bricks tiles and similar, along with cements and glass . The traditional crafts are described in the article on pottery. Historically, ceramic products have been hard, porous and brittle. The study of ceramics consists to a large extent of methods to mitigate these problems, and accentuate the strengths of the materials, as well as to offer up unusual uses for these materials.
Examples of Ceramic Materials
  • Silicon nitride ( Si N ), which is used as an abrasive powder.
