The Graduate Program in Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver offers training leading to the Ph.D. degree. Students in the program undertake a rigorous curriculum of classroom instruction and laboratory research that will prepare them to become independent scientists in biomedical research. We have an outstanding faculty of basic and clinical scientists who are committed to research, discovery and teaching. The graduate program has particularly strong groups in the areas of cell biology developmental biology stem cell biology neuroscience ... molecular biology and molecular structure , and research related to human disease . The faculty and students within the program are studying both basic principles within these fields using tractable experimental systems such as cell and tissue culture, model organisms such as mice, zebrafish, Drosophila, and C. elegans, as well as applying fundamental discoveries from these systems to the more complex problems of human disease. The faculty and students in the program are highly interactive and collaborative, fostering numerous opportunities for interdisciplinary research and novel experimental approaches.

    168. Michael White Laboratory - Research In Apicomlexan Protozoan - Toxoplasma Gondii
cell and molecular biology research on the Apicomplexan protozoans and Toxoplasma Gondii at Montana State University, Bozeman, MT.
    http://vmbmod10.msu.montana.edu/vmb/white-lab/home.htm
Research in the White laboratory focuses on the Apicomplexan protozoans which are responsible for a significant burden of infectious disease in the world. Malarial parasites are the most infamous members of this phylum as they are responsible for enormous human suffering and mortality-killing annually more than a million children in Africa alone. Five hundred million individuals are estimated by WHO to suffer from malaria world-wide. The coccidian members of the Apicomplexa such as Toxoplasma and Cryptosporidium cause opportunistic infections in humans particularly immunocompromised individuals such as those infected with the HIV virus. The lay-person may know Toxoplasma from cautions given pregnant women to avoid contact with the cat box because infections with this parasite can cause birth defects or miscarriages. Other coccidians including the Eimeria Neospora , and Isopora , are important in veterinary medicine, causing serious systemic, enteric, and respiratory disease in livestock.

Current Research Program My research focuses on the mechanisms of regulation of gene expression and how cellular fates are established during embryonic development. We are interested in the role of cellular interactions in establishing and maintaining spatial territories of specialized gene expression in sea urchin embryos. The products of such genes are useful molecular markers for identification of differentiating cells; the expression of some such genes is initiated autonomously while the expression of others depends on cellular interactions which can be experimentally manipulated. It may be possible to use this system to identify molecules involved in these cellular interactions. We are interested in the interactions of mesenchyme cells with the extracellular matrix and epithelial cells, using microinjection assays. We are interested in the evolution of multigene families and their divergent spatial patterns of expression in echinoderm embryos; this involves comparisons of gene structure and cis-acting regulatory elements, as well as investigations of gene expression in interspecies hybrid embryos. Promoter function is assessed in transgenic embryos created by micro-injection of promoter-reporter fusion genes.
