Highlight titles The Organic Codes Marcello Barbieri Marcello Barbieri presents new theories on the origins of life, and embryonic development. Advance praise: ‘It looked so intriguing that I started reading it on the way home. Luckily for me, the bus was late… It is really fascinating.’ Noam Chomsky, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Paperback ( Hardback Imaginal Discs Lewis I. Held Jr Examines the genetic circuitry of the ‘fruit fly’, tackling the hows and the whys behind fly development. ' … figures and their legends … packed full of more information than most text books. The appendices, especially the compendia of genes affecting particular processes are useful. Imaginal Discs would be a useful read for anyone interested in pattern formation generally, and should be required for workers in Drosophila patterning.' The past century has witnessed a breathtaking array of discoveries in the biological sciences, in particular in the general area of molecular biology, the scientific discipline that seeks to fully understand the molecular basis of heredity, genetic variation, and the expression patterns of individual units of heredity called genes. (Please see our brief primer on molecular biology ) Newspaper articles and media reports today routinely discuss advances in "gene therapy" and "transgenics", procedures which would have been unimaginable even a generation ago.
Many people view genetic engineering as a relatively new field of scientific pursuit, but in fact the techniques that are in use today are the result of a series of landmark discoveries that were made over a period spanning more than 125 years. This article presents a timeline of key discoveries that have culminated in the human genome project, an international effort to decipher the sequence of the 3 billion base pair subunits of DNA which reside in the chromosomes of human beings.
1865 Medelian Inheritance
Mendel
published the results of cross breeding experiments he had conducted on the garden pea Pisum sativum . By noting the appearance or disappearance of traits, such as pod and flower color, over several generations Mendel was able to postulate a generalized set of rules governing inheritance. He proposed that there are discrete units of heredity (which today we call genes) which are transmitted from generation to generation, even though some of these units are not necessarily expressed as an observable trait in every generation.

A research group in the Department of Plant Biochemistry, Center for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Lund University, Sweden Chloroplasts and mitochondria are energy-converting organelles of eukaryotic cells. They also contain small, specialised, functional genomes.
Their genetic and energy-converting systems are bacterial in origin. But most genes for chloroplast and mitochondrial components are now found in the cell nucleus. So why did some genes move, while others did not?

There is not one cell , but many different types of cells . Cells are like people. Look around you and you will see that everyone has their own job. Cells are the same. They all have their own job, and are therefore specialised. The theoretical plant cell used in these pages does not exist, it is just an example I created in order to show all the elements at once. Often, in a specialised cell, not all the elements are present, but some are numerous. We will see that when examining some examples of cells
